SIDENOTE: I live in Indian River county (vero beach/giffford) where juvi, sac, melly bortlen were raised and grew up and my current girlfriend’s, ex girlfriend of 3 years is Mellys step sister so she was around them all and his little brother slime and his step dad Benny. And my girlfriend’s family grew up knowing all those kids. My girlfriend said it’s crazy to watch a trial of people she knows.. like when he was coming up, that was HUGE for our small lil town. Then all this happens.

@7:50 The problem for the defense is that it's almost impossible for there to be an alternative perpetrator in this case. Whoever the alternative perpetrator is would have to have been inside the vehicle when the shots were fired because the police found shell casings INSIDE the vehicle. So, the alternative perpetrator can't just be any random person. It would have to be someone inside the vehicle when the shooting occurred. Random people on IG won't cut it as an alternative perpetrator.

I know the defense attorney is doing things he’s not supposed to do in opening statement. However, even knowing that, I find his presentation very compelling. I’m not sure that it’ll do much to get over the evidence against Melly. The state felt confident to bring this case in the first place, and despite the burden being on the state, defense attorneys often have an uphill battle in introducing reasonable doubt. I like the demeanor and presentation of the defense attorney who did opening statements. I haven’t gotten much further than that.

Exactly what I was thinking about Bortlen as well! If they really did kill them and now Melly's lawyer is trying to blame it on Bortlen, you think he will get upset and end up flipping on Melly? I thought Bortlen got out largely because he didn’t have GSR on him when they tested at the hospital. At least not on one test, and it’s hard to imagine you could pass any test if you just shot a gun an hour beforehand. But it is possible that he was already cooperating, or at least will now. Or maybe he’s so “real” that he still won’t snitch on Melly, even if Melly’s okay with his lawyers blaming Bortlen 🤷‍♂️

Finally watched the full opening statements. And I’m sorry but anyone who feels the defense gave a compelling opening statement is nuts lol. That guy is grasping for any sign of air. Sounds like he’s got the cuffs on already and just praying for a loophole for wrongful arrest. Just dropping useless hints about possible other perps instead of having any sort of tangible defense of his own to discount the mountain of shady behavior and evidence about Smelly that night. Smelly is clearly involved and they’ve all lied poorly about what really happened. My concern at this point is, while the prosecution clearly can prove that what they all said happened didn’t really happen, they maybe can’t prove Smelly actually fired the gun inside the car. Feels like this wank could get off just based on reasonable doubt even though this is the worst cover up story ever invented by these toddlers.
