@@ni9274 Once they're in the tower by definition they won't be homeless. Also, homeless people are just people without homes: they're not feral animals or Republicans. If you treat them like people instead of a nuisance or a pestilence they can and will get their feet back under them and become contributing members of society. My BIL is ex-homeless: after his parents kicked him to the curb at 16 when they couldn't beat the trans out of him he lived tough on the streets of Rochester and Philly for a few years, making what money he could working under the table as a drag king. Very long story short he's now got an Honorable Discharge from the US Army after several tours as an ordinance technician in Afghanistan, multiple advanced degrees, works in advanced climate modeling with NOAA, will be celebrating nine years of marital bliss with my sister this coming August, and with her he just welcomed my niece into the world this past March. Homeless people have potential and need support. If we could get our act together and start supporting them rather than trying to dispose of them our society would be in a much better place.

It's a Reduction to Absurdity ("Reductio Ad Absurdum" or the Apagogical Argument). By exaggerating your opponent's argument to the point where it becomes wholly absurd, you shut down discussion about the original, more reasonable argument. @@BlitzkriegOmega Hyperbole can be used to unjustifiably ridicule an argument, as you just said, or to highlight (via an absurd illustration) the inherent flaw in a specific argument. Not everything is a fallacy, it depends on the context and purpose. It is also unnecessary to say "it's a common tactic used by conservatives", there's no need to antagonize anyone. Everyone, no matter where they are on the political spectrum, is susceptible of making the mistake of employing a logical fallacy; and they certainly do (like the guy in the TikTok who's being critized here, who is ironically using reductio ad absurdum himself).

Yeah. Like, even commie blocks were in their time adequate living spaces and for the most part upgrades over the lack of plumbing and electricity in Eastern Europe post-WW2. Any basic modern apartment building would be a massive improvement over a tent city at the overpass. Having an address by itself solves so many problems for the homeless. Running water, a bed, heating, light and a stove get rid of most health problems they face. Add an internet connection and you're golden. And it's not like you can't upgrade out of your block once you have a job that pays enough. Unlike the streets, you are not forced into a small apartment.

I love the "losing trees, yards, greenery" line. Two things, firstly you can add greenery to a well designed city. Trees, parks, reserves are all things you can find in the world's great cities. Secondly, one of the advantages of denser housing and urbanization is that because the city is physically smaller, you are physically closer to the edge of the city, thus are closer to actual nature and greenery. See any Dutch city. Less then ten miles from the city center, you can just drive out and hit rural area.

Also the monoculture of suburban lawns are not very good for the environment since they destroy local ecosystems with invasive species that often require too many resources like water and fertilizer to keep alive. Because it seems like he's talking more about aesthetic quality than something made to a structurally high standard that will last a long time. Because those examples he showed at the beginning when he was saying "no he doesn't mean build stuff like this...", those types of buildings are usually built like shit but they ARE made to appease middle class aesthetic sensibilities. That said I think the main point he's missing is I WOULD SURE RATHER LIVE IN A COMMIE BLOCK THAN BE HOMELESS. Another thing about zoning and housing scarcity is that because of how little land is actually zoned out for large dense developments you often have the same issue as the low density housing but in reverse. Developers will be spending millions upon millions on dense high-rises and they almost exclusively will be "luxury" abodes that completely price out anyone making below 80-100k a year _individually._ This has been happening in my city of Madison for years now. You want a 2 bed 2 bath apartment or townhome in someplace like Williamson or Doty Street? You're gonna have to shell out 2,500 a month. Minimum.

This is my favourite zoning analogy. Imagine a chrismas dinner with your family but instead of all the different foods being on the table, easily accessible to everyone nearby, the meat is in the kitchen, vegetables on the balcony, wine in the bathroom, salad in the bedroom, and dessert in the garden. It makes no sense and causes unnecessary traffic and wasted time. Mixed use zoning is better in every way.

On this map, red doesn't even mean tall building. It just means multi family where you can also do commercial. LA is fuckkkkked. 16:55 it was done before cars. When NYC was much younger, they looked at the island of manhattan and thought "Yep, people will live on this entire thing one day", and planned out the streets and blocks without walking the land. The easiest thing to do is to draw blocks, and then sell those blocks to speculators. It was a huge success. Other cities saw this, and decided to copy NYC. People were trying to copy that success so that their ownership of a small part of the city would make them rich.

I don't even know where he got the "you can only have two out of the three" argument from, or why it even matters. Like first of all, when you are homeless you ain't gonna give a shit about quality in the first place, you are going to be happy having a roof over your head, access to warm and private showers, and a comfortable bed. And second of all, the apartments made from housing first initiatives actually don't look too bad. They look pretty decent. Sure they aren't the $4k/month luxury apartments, but they certainly don't look like shoddy apartments you see in dangerous neighborhoods.

I can't believe this guy actually talks like this. He is not velvet, he is the soft, mushy part of the onion when it's gone bad

Adam Something has shown multiple times you can have all three. The only reason the Soviets had a problem is they were in a huge hurry following world War because they had millions and millions unhoused.
