Explanation Time! 1. Fanmeets began as a way to get people in S.Korea to buy more than one album. The more albums you buy the better your odds of getting into a fanmeet. They were meant as rewards to die hard fans willing to purchase hundreds of albums for a chance at meeting their idols. When International fans started participating in this system of rewards, they started fancalls. When the pandemic happened, fancalls became the norm. (International fans run GOs, where they convince people to buy albums through them and they cover the cost of shipping or they give you the photo cards you want in order to stack up those album sales for themselves.) 2. These are marketing tools. The more you buy, the more you are rewarded. In the States, you have artists being paid millions of dollars to perform at rich kids' birthday parties. Same system. In the olden days artists had to have patrons in order to make a living. Really the system has just evolved, but it's the same system. If you want to succeed as an artist you have to put up with rich people treating you like their personal performing poodle. 3. Some music suppliers now run their own "GOs" and they give the little people who can't afford to purchase hundreds of albums a chance at winning a fan call. These winners tend to be a lot more grateful, a lot more respectful and just in general a lot more fun to watch. BUT if you get caught posting a fan call online, you can be banned for life by the label. So the ones you usually find online are filmed by either those rich kids who aren't worried about being banned or people that have multiple fan accounts; so in short, not your average regular person. You are already proving yourself to be a bit extreme if you're willing to risk posting your fancall. 4. I have won a few fan calls with my smaller groups and in general my calls have included me thanking them for doing a fancall, telling them how much I appreciate their music, and that I can't wait to see them on tour. See, pretty wholesome! 5. Sir, you have a platform and an audience. I'm sure if you reached out to JYP you could probably arrange an interview with SKZ or any other group you would like to interact with. I've seen plenty of reactors interacting with groups. Now sometimes, the bigger groups don't do interviews with KZbin personalities, so my suggestion would be to seek out the smaller groups or groups just coming back from the military, as they are trying to build their fanbase.

The sad thing is that idols are instructed to satisfy whatever fans ask for as much as possible. Staff never interrupts awkward calls and does not help the idol in any way to get out of an uncomfortable situation. After all, the fans paid a lot of money for a bunch of albums to win this calls and it is believed that therefore it is necessary to please them. I think this approach is inhumane towards idols. But companies have a different opinion.

Hey! Experienced fancaller here. You can win these fancalls by buying albums of a specific store during a specific timespan. The more you buy, the higher your chances. Some stores will also remember past winners and who were uncomplicated, and will let these people win again a bit easier. I’ve had a couple of fancalls with different groups and some of the same group. For some members, you can definitely tell that they have their guard up for the first 20-30 seconds at times. I am guessing they check out if the person seems like they’d say anything weird to them. Luckily all my fancalls went really well so far. I always ask about their latest comeback, their favourite tracks, how their day has been etc. when there’s still time left I start to play some games with them.. rock paper scissors or this or that. It’s my top priority to make the fancall enjoyable for both the idol and me and I can tell that they become a lot more relaxed and open after exchanging a few sentences with me I have to admit the adrenaline and extreme nervousness can get to you.. but from my experience it’s always alright to just say “sorry, I am so nervous right now”. The idols will always be understanding and take it from you. One member even admitted that they’re nervous as well. I hope more people who genuinely just wanna have a chill and nice conversation win.. and I do hope these people who make them uncomfortable like this get blacklisted 😭

imo they should scrap fancalls as a whole, i've seen grown individuals act weird on fancalls plenty of times so making them 18+ wouldn't really be of help and i feel like besides that there's nothing left (other than maybe allowing idols to hang up when a fan crosses a boundary but they'd probably get a ton of hate for that if they did). there's definitely been a lot of cute and funny moments that have come out of these fancalls but at what cost? a lot of these 'fans' are too comfortable and don't realise that they don't actually know these idols and vice versa. idk i've always just thought that fancalls weren't a good idea lol
@juwoos6 ай бұрын
another thing is a lot of these idols are either too kind or afraid of receiving backlash (understandably so) if they were to speak against a fan who 'tried oh so hard and spent oh so much money to win this fancall' (which is completely on them and not an excuse) but i wish they would speak their mind more often and put fans in their place instead of feeding into it. which a few have done like nct's jaehyun and the boyz' chanhee who both refused to do aegyo however that resulted in them getting hate. it's ridiculous tbh

The companies need to have boundaries in place so the idols and fans are all on the same page with stuff like this, BEFORE any fancalls are done. Anything s3xual in nature should be automatic blacklist from everything. Like, you can never get another fancall or attend any events like fanmeets or concerts, and get banned from any fancafes and blocked from commenting on any of their socials. Aside from that, definitely make them 18+ and give the idols the ability to flat out hang up if people are making them uncomfortable. Unfortunately, i think the companies oftentimes ignore bad behavior because it comes from fans that will spend a much time and money as necessary to get these interactions. The companies allow it to keep happening bedside they're messing money from it.
@TheNightxSky6 ай бұрын
They will never blacklist sexual behavior unless it's extremely unhinged. Don't forget that companies still advertise the group to the fans as their girl/boyfriend. also most fans, especially ones buying albums to get into these fancalls are above 18.

Especially since one of the groups seems to be a little awkward and others don't, I'd like to see why you think that is. since you said last time that you would like to see the smaller groups, I thought it would be a good content for you to react to. I've done two fancalls with Jongho from Ateez and it was MORTIFYING. It's not his fault, he was actually very professional and I noticed he had his boundaries ready while being friendly and lovely to me, but in those two minutes you can't think. Jongho was ready to take the reigns of the call, though he was just as cool letting me ramble on about loving him for two minutes straight while shaking and losing my mind, and he very politely made sure to end the call on time. I made him laugh though so!!! Score!!! I like that they exist; I''ve been a kpop fan for over a decade and never dreamt that I would have the chance to talk to any of my idols, but I think overall it's super harmful. It encourages gambling, mass spending because each call has its own POB and usually the highest buyer wins, addiction because believe me- you'll either love the rush or feel like you didn't do well enough and need a redo- and situations like this where the idol is open to...whatever some of those people were doing. I think it would be better if there were harsher rules (where a fan can be hung up on) and only one entry was allowed per person, and one win per era or store.

this is why i couldnt do a fancall. A lot of the fancalls are usually quite sweet and funny for both the idol and fan but like with anything you get that certain group of ppl that cross the line and make them uncomfortable 😭 It's such a shame bc we know how much they love connecting with their fans. I would love it if they were able to just hang up the call and call it quits when things start getting out of hand but then again these calls usually only last about a minute so they probably just find it easier to grin and bear it 😅 There's been many cases where in situations like this the idol politely but firmly sets their boundaries and i love to see it! Just wish they weren't put in that position in the first place.

Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries. Meaning, comapines and idols need to learn how to draw clear, kind, non-judgemental lines defining what is ok and what is not ok, and being very matter of fact about upholding those boundaries. When you have clear standards, and enforce them without anger, without defensiveness but just with a kind, practical reminder that "This behavior is not acceptable" you will only lose a small fraction of the worst offenders. Some of these awkward calls are by folks who simply misunderstand what is ok, or who watch those thirst trap videos so much that they think that icky behavior is actually expected/normal, or just get nervous and spazz out on a live. Clear boundaries would help school those sorts of folks into acceptable, non-cringey behavior. And for the ones who are completely out of touch with reality, or actively like to make idols uncomfortable, there should be a clear line to cut them off. Sorry, I don't care how much money someone spends, you should not be able to buy our way into rude, invasive, or nasty behavior.

I’m an older fan. I would still be excited to talk to the members of a few groups. I have questions about singing and dancing, or comments about what I like about them. I hear many people trying to”pick up” lines which have mistranslated idioms, and with the combinations of languages involved, the end result just fails. Why are they saying pick up lines any way? Maybe they don’t know. I had a guy explain to me what a pick up line was when I was in my 20s. I thought I had received a sincere compliment from another guy and nothing more. Since there’s no age limit, I think there should be fan call etiquette taught by examples. All we see are the worst ones on KZbin . Also, the idols should lead by starting the conversation, in my opinion. If the fan has a performance, such as a song or flirty comment about sexiness, the idol could say, Oh that was great 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 it was nice to meet you, and treat it like the rehearsed performance it is. The ones who come back have spent a lot of money buying albums to guarantee a spot.
@ellem89906 ай бұрын
Since you're an older fan, you should be aware of how many fans fantasize about dating their idols so that's a pretty simple reason for why they flirt. Also the ones I've heard aren't in any way teanslated from Korean, they're just regular english pick up lines. I personally think it light be better to not have fan calls, because there are other ways that fans can get their questions across and not giving the weirdos a chance to make others uncomfortable. Like a live q&a session, which just has a few select people and the questions are monitored (I also expect that if it's a group of people, then a lot less fans would feel bold enough to do something like this).

Max's eyes getting progressively wider as the fan comments start crossing more lines is simultaneously incredibly relatable and incredibly funny 😂 and so honest too like SAME I also want them to hang up the call after the fan says hi daddy Personally also not a fan of the fancalls- I believe that there's a lot of normal ones that are super valuable to the fans (obviously) and there's the extra album sales from people trying to get a fancall. But the rich element to obtaining a fancall kind of skews it in a weird direction, and I think idols shouldn't have to choose between these kinds of creepy interactions, and potentially getting annihilated online if they stonewall a fan (although again, I believe that most fans are normal- but the crazy section does tend to be disproportionately loud about their unasked for opinions). Also Max getting excited every time an idol he knows pops up, also relatable and hilarious, stan Max tbh Suggestion for next reaction? This is a link to a Stray Kids special video (from a Japan release DVD I think?) called SKZ Museum where the members take turns sitting like statues and the others talk about them- personally I just think it's funny: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKnceHl9hpd9iqM

Dying of second hand embarrassment! 😳 Honestly some of the shit these guys deal with from "fans" is just insane. Like you said it must be traumatising for them. I think it would be amazing to get to talk to these guys and there are of course people who are respectful and kind on these calls, but unfortunately there's always gonna be people who take it too far and spoil it for everyone. The idol's safety and mental well-being should be top priority. I really wish more of them would stand up for themselves and just be like "no this is not acceptable". I wonder if there are some compilations with nice interactions on fan calls

As someone who has done multiple fan calls I , personally, also know people who get in regularly and not everyone is like this, thankfully. However i am confused about who let these calls keep going after the first cringe or messed up thing cause theres like 10 paragraph essays on all fancall sites basically saying all the million reasons they can end a fancall at any moment. Hopefully since these fancalls happened those specific stores have become more strict. Also some comments on the pinned comment: i dont personally remember there being fancalls before the pandemic. I remember them starting during the pandemic as fansigns (in person) were no longer possible. But the reason they are still a thing is cause the companies realized just how much extra $$$ They could make if they continued to do fancalls as well as fansigns. Also it gives international fans a chance they wouldn't otherwise get to talk to their idols. For me its been a blessing and a curse 😂 as i do feel a bit closer to the idols i talk to then i feel the need to collect more of their stuff 😅 then i have less $$$. I think fancalls should 100% be 18+. But maybe I'm just biased being that I'm over 30. Either way I do think these conpanies and idols, during these fancalls, need to be more strict and just hang up on people who are disrespectful or too cringe. And of course, ban anyone who is a problem.

From what I know, you should spend like A LOT of money on albums to win a fan call.

I think the issue is vetting people, maybe having a small form to fill to get a feel for what they might say can narrow down the risk, there's a loss of some marketing but it will likely be temporary and make things fairer. I don't know if they apply this method already.

15:04 I definitely agree that sometimes fan calls are crazy and uncomfortable, but as u said, u ARE only seeing the extremes right now. I recommend that u watch some wholesome or funny fancall moments. I’d love to see u react to it aswell to be honest, because it would show u how most fan calls are actually very nice to see
@annanymous15276 ай бұрын
I think the problem here isn't fancalls itself, but fan culture in general. Idols are supposed to worship fans and give in to everything, which makes fans feel like they can do these kind of things. Imo, it should be normalised for idols to shut down fans who make them feel uncomfortable. And normalise being able to call out fans. I've always thought it didn't make sense that fans had so much power. If there were clear boundaries like this, fancalls shouldn't be a problem and it can be really wholesome

I think fans should be throughly warned that an idol WILL end the fancall if they make weird comments/they are uncomfortable. And I do think that decision should be in the hand of the idols themselves, because the company staff might be ok with pushing boundaries just a little more, OR, on the contrary, try to cut a call short when fans are simply trying educate an idol on an issue, which is something that actually happens often

Fancalls will always continue to be a thing because that's how groups get overinflated album sales, by milking that parasocial connection that is so prevalent in kpop. People buy thousands of dollars worth of albums to be in with a chance to win (the more you buy the higher your chances, which is why the same people keep winning as they have the resources to) and these people don't get blacklisted for bad behaviour either because its good business.

*the filter on ur face threw me off lol. And lmao ur reaction to Han’s voice being called sexy and then her calling him Baby. Ur like NAWWWW 🖐🏼 🤣🤣💀 ur ready to protect ur boy. True Stay. And I believe a lot of those ppl that win multiple calls will by tons of albums just to get those calls. Then they get turn around and just sell those albums so they get get some money back anyway. And hehe that would be cool if u get a fan call with Han. You would be one of the more respectable and cool fan calls he’s gotten and I think he’d be happy with it 🫶🏼 LETS MAKE THIS HAPPEN. That last one was funny, with Joshua playing along. And THAT my friends is a taste of how he is the biggest cheater on GOSE. Cuz he’s smooth af (if he gets away with it 🤣🤣 which in this case he didn’t.. but you get what I mean.) but speaking of GOSE Max, it would be fun if u reacted to one of Seventeen’s GOSE episodes. Maybe one of their Mafia ones.*

Most of the frequent fan call users are kinda crazy cuz they spend lots LOTS of money buying so many albums for them to increase the probability of winning, also they buy in different stores so they can win different fan calls one in each store. They crazy T.T

also, I was thinking to myself yeah why do they still do these?? I'm not sure why since these interactions are stemming into the saesang/ stalker obsessive behavior. I don' know the statistics on good healthy interactions with fans on fancalls in comparison to creepy uncomfortable interactions with fans on fancalls, but this definitely got me thinking..

Yeahh they should definitely put some rules for the fancall. I just wish they can just CUT OFF the call when there are some disrespect people or at least warn them 'you've crossed the line'

as a han biased person, i don’t even know how i’d speak to him if given the chance. i feel like we’re both anxious around new people so it’s bound to be a little awkward. i guess i’d probably let him know how much his fans in the fandom, especially on twitter, have been seeing all of his efforts despite being excluded from certain campaigns and articles. he’s widely regarded as the ace of the fourth generation of kpop and even then, i don’t think he knows how much talent he has. a lot of doubt he’s expressed in his singing abilities despite him improving and developing his own style every year. the company could do so much more with him if they truly wanted. that’s my wish, for him to know that he’s seen. on another note, personally, i’m not interested in any idol romantically so the thought would never cross my mind, even more as a human being who has some sense of boundaries. idols should definitely have the option to opt out of a fan call in any case where they feel uncomfortable or disrespected. even if they’re not the ones physically doing it, they can give a certain look to the staff (who are always on the other end of the phone) to let them know they don’t wish to continue.
