I don't know how I missed you up until now - I've been searching all over the Internet -- more specifically on youtube - looking for new ideas/color combos to tie-dye and/or ice dye, and finally, success. I've been tie/ice-dying for 7 or 8 years (mostly shirts) and selling them at a flea market. I live in Texas, and the art of tie-dying doesn't seem to be as popular here as it is in other parts of the country - both a good and not-so-good thing. It's a good thing as far as competition goes, there's not a lot of it around so I have to challenge myself. I'm always looking for new ideas and different ways that I can improve my existing techniques and finding your video about "the V" has done that - in a big way. You do great video - clear, concise, informative and interesting. Color me inspired! Thanks so much from deep in the heart of Texas! Terry

You are a much better instructor than some here... How do I fold for a long sleeve, ankle-length cotton dress? Are you using Procion MX dyes? What brand do you like the most? What about the use of Urea, Vinegar and Salt? What is the one thing that will make the colors brighter and not wash out? Heat setting with an iron? I know...so many questions!

Always amazed by your ice dyes. We've done it at home with good results. We also used liquid Rit dye over ice with the same results and more vibrant colors. I've been dying bed sheets, it's a lot of work!
@lynnt45118 жыл бұрын
do the rit dyes last as long tho on the fabric?
@WhiskCraft_8 жыл бұрын
+Lynn T So far after several washings everything is still pretty vibrant and I've washed them a number of times already. The only thing was that I forgot to use soda ash so on my sheets the colors blurred a bit, but they still look really cool and all of the clothing we did stayed without bleeding. We did a mix of powder dyes and liquid Rit, the Rit just sort of thickens up because it freezes on the ice and melts slowly as the ice melts. Hoping to do more soon.

Do you eyeball about how much dye you use while ice dyeing or do you measure it out? Seems like I want to always saturate the ice with the powdered dye. So I feel maybe I'm using too much after I see your method.
@CrispyGuy8 жыл бұрын
Its a total eyeball. The acceptable amount is a rather large range of light to dark hues, just dont make it such a light sprinkling that it doesnt saturate all the way through, or come out faded.

Does it matter if the back of the shirt is on top of the first "layer" of dye or does it come out the same no matter what ? What side would you do first if you wanted the lighter side on the front of the shirt?
@CrispyGuy7 жыл бұрын
I put the back side up and put the dark on top of that, then flip it so that the bright colours go on top of the front side. Both sides always turn out well, but I find it's a more natural look to have the front a little brighter.

Often with women's clothes it's texture and colour that's most important, as most of the style exists in the cut of the shirt. I'd fold it in half (see the vid on how to do this correctly), scrunch it together (keeping it flat), and melt ice for texture-- you can get away with doing only one side if they're proper sized ice cubes. Then all you have to pick is the powdered colours that reflect your spirit~*
