I have never really played DnD before, but when I think of a good chaotic neutral rogue edgelord, I would imagine some guy whose village has some sort of tribal feud going on that he's trying to avenge. Or maybe he was exiled from his village for running away from an unwinnable duel, and he can't be recognized by other villagers for his own safety. He would not be killing and stealing everything in sight, instead he would be basically trying to stay below the radar and fit in with the locals, but in a slightly clueless way. This is quite the tale. Over the years, one of the things I've found fun to do is to have the typical brooding edgelord intro, and then end up being as polite and helpful as possible once things start going. Out of character, it's because I'm just sick of these people, but in-character, it's usually justified that the character had a rough go, and just wants others to have a better time, so if you want to see a change, you have to make that change yourself; be the change you want to see in the world. Stories like this remind us of the lines we need to be mindful of walking. It can be fun to play a dark and mysterious character, but if you're only using it as a front to rack up has high a body count as possible, then maybe team-based games aren't for you. Maybe that's why there are so many likes on this video. Almost all of the people here liked how the edgelord got what he deserved, and we all wish we could have that in our own games. ... Understandably the " mysteriously brooding" edgelord in the corner might have have initially biased the DM, and the later actions only reinforcing this. While an edgelord is most of the time the one messing with the story or being an ass to the part, I specifically think the mind control part with the townsfolk is a shimmer of good RPing on his part. Maybe it's with how the GM in my games handles critical success and failure success he let's us narrate it ourselves if we want, but my point here is that if Fekhar new mind control exists and is used by the bbeg, combined with the full of happy people town and the Nat 1 about whether they are only pretending to be friendly, I believe its completely natural for a player to play out being paranoid about everyone including his party being secretly against him, at least with the weight of the critical failure on him. The other stuff were definitely stupid and an asshole thing to do though.
@DrakoVongola114 жыл бұрын
It was also a bit of a fail for the DM to just outright tell the player "Your character believes this". That's not how it works with those kinds of checks, it just tells the player that the opposite is true, it's much better to just leave it at "You aren't sure". Then the player can decide what to do with that info.
@michaelcross76654 жыл бұрын
@@DrakoVongola11 highly disagree. Nat 1 is the perfect time for comedic misdirection. If the player was sane he'd spend time trying to find gaps in the illusion or surreptitiously poking people to check, maybe even with stealth checks. Buying someone a drink and checking to see if the liquid goes down after they drink. Lots of fun side antics you could get into and everyone knows it's all in good fun. Attacking the villagers with lethal force because he thinks they might be illusions doesn't make sense in or out of character. If aren't sure something is real how does attempting to murder it just to see if it works end up being a rational train of thought?

I often play my character like a companion character from a BioWare RPG. My characters alignment and morality will shift depending on the events of the game and influence of other players. I have had changes as small as a CN pirate shifting to CG, or as large as a LG paladin completely shift to a CE antipaladin.
@michaelcross76654 жыл бұрын
Seems a little less creative to me personally to just go with the flow. Real people would never go from LG to CE in 99% of situations. It seems like it'd be more interesting to have some semi solid convictions that you don't stray too far from and it can even cause RP conflict with party or inner turmoil at your actions.

So I opted to play more malleable characters that reacted to stories and events, being influenced by them, rather than being a driving force and leading the way.

He tried to kill an encampment of soldiers that would give the main quest, he then tried to burn the cargo because no matter how many times I (as the dm) told him that there was nothing magical about it, he was positive that it was evil, the party had to restrain him, when he got into the city he tried to kill the guards to get in despite the fact that I gave the party a letter written by the person who asked them to take the cargo to the city. Currently the only Chaotic Neutral character I have played was an insane cultists warlock who's only goal was to please his patron. He participated well with the group in order to collect magical items to use as offerings to his patron. The craziest things he did was buy a church which he renovated it into a chapel to his patron (this was load of fun thanks to his high charisma), and broke into a rival cultist's home to find information on him (to find and kill him to gain more of the patron's favor), killing two guards that blocked that were questioning him after his banishment spell failed to get rid of him.

I disagree with you on one instance. An Edge-lords tomb stone would just be a corner for them to brood in.

Whenever I hear a story like this I cant help but think, "Dont these people know how to have actual conversations?" Fehkar was obviously a problem and the rest of the table didnt gel with him. Why not talk it out and worst case scenario kick him out?

37 opportunity attacks and still kicking? You gotta admit, he's a tough one.

5:42 - Noooo, "do anything without consequences" is an identifying trait of Chaotic Evil. The "rebellious teenager" is a more accurate description of Chaotic Neutral. Chaotic Evil is what the biker gangers from the old Mad Max movies were, as well as Alex DeLarge from "A Clockwork Orange": they all went where they wanted, took what they wanted, and if anyone tried to stop them they opened up with a little of the old Ultra-Violence.

Still watching but the bit with Fehkar rushing to grab the gems just instantly conjured memories of that old Looney Toons short with the Aladdin’s cave full of treasure, mainly Daffy’s reaction to the treasure.
@OrangeyChocolate4 жыл бұрын
I maintain that Chaotic Neutral can be loads of fun to play and to watch, but it has to be played carefully. Hell, any Neutral alignment has to be handled with care, be it Lawful, True or Chaotic, since you’re more likely to end up with a stupidly exaggerated version of it than with any Good or Evil alignment. I remember a CN rogue/sorcerer I once played in a one-shot, and it was a fantastic roleplaying opportunity (scamming a deckhand out of his wages for fun, lacing veiled insults into conversation with a fat and drunken innkeeper, refusing to drink expensive wine on principle, etc.). CN can be very freeing, but there such a thing as having too much of a good thing.

My first character was a Chaotic Neutral Rogue. I would set up the cards for scams & tricks & wait to see if I had the opportunity to draw them. Sometimes it worked well, like poisoning a guy & surprise attacking his team. Leading to my party completely destroying them. Or when I convinced a small village that our Bard was a messenger of god. Resulting in treasure & a safe place to stay. It pretty much left things in the DMs hands. If she wanted to bite & reward my creativity, she could. If she didn't then it would be sat there waiting. Worked well, very proud of him for a first character. This guy sounds like he just wanted a murder hobo game.

Sounds like you had a fun and entertaining character. My first character was an edgelord Chaotic Neutral elf wizard, but played horribly. That character is now an old shame of mine.

Haha I think a lot of people have had characters like that. I got most of my edgelord characters out of my system through video games like Neverwinter Nights.

Stories like this make me want to make an edgelord character archetype who is actually the nicest guy ever. He isn't brooding, he just has resting homicide face. He has an edgy, silly name, but he suffixes it with things like "The brave" or "The kind." He's got all black armor just because he likes the color black.

Having suffered more than one comp crash in my years, my deepest condolences to you. p.s. Edge Lords don't have tombstones. They assume that it's because the world is uncaring and cold. Mostly it's because no one can be arsed to waste the effort to bury them.

Some fish do need to keep swimming. But there are a few that can "sit" in one spot, and instead push water over their gills to continue breathing.

There are 2 versions of the Chaotic Neutral alignment. True Chaotic Neutral and Chaotic Stupid. This guy was the latter. Besides his ceaseless murdering, he also broke the number one rule of thievery: Steal FOR the party, not FROM them. Good thing his stupidity got him dead and not the party.

Hey man, thanks to you I've just got a brilliant idea - I'm going to create a fake edgelord who can't comfortably sit in corners because of a curse. This would also mean he would have to move beds away from them or sleep on the floor. His end goal would be to find the deity that cursed him.
