What's most interesting to me is that what Drinker said about, 'Imagine being a young white male and having no heroes to look up to." That's the exact argument people made for women and minorities for years, and there's some truth to that. While skin color and gender alone shouldn't be what attaches you to a character, that visual aesthetic does have an impact. What's funny is that in the name of "justice and inclusion" these woke morons are doing the exact same thing to while males that they complained about, ie making them all worthless or inept. So it's not about "justice and equality." It's about vengeance and retribution.
@Capt.Thunder Жыл бұрын
Did they proactively tear any minorities down, though? The closest thing I can think of is the trope of the black comedy sidekick, which was so stale, although at least most of them were likeable and appreciated even if their role was limited. To actively tell white male characters that they are bad people who need correction because of their genetics is basically blood guilt and it's on a whole other level.
@james3876 Жыл бұрын
Vengeance and retribution for perceived imbalance of opportunities available to oneself as opposed to what white men in the past have had? That would make sense. There's an ever present temptation I have felt in my own life to blame mediocrity or failings on bad systems or others. The alternative feels bad and doesn't always seem to pay out. Would guess it's the same for alot of other people too. I grew up in a culture where there were mitigations to that temptation, but maybe that part isn't so universal
@nicholascowling7052 Жыл бұрын
What's interesting about the fat community discussion is that I only ever hear complaints from women. Maybe because said complaints are on social media, but I can't recall ever hearing a guy complain about being marginalized because he's fat. So, It's women chasing victim status, but I also think it's combined with the modern day women's mantra of freedom of responsibility from past choices so that them being fat is not their fault at all. Look at that one tiktok chick who blamed herself being fat on white colonizers... I'd argue that we could do with more fat shaming in our culture as being morbidly obese literally implies that you are fat enough to die and yet people are supposed to be accepting towards that.

Being large isnt healthy. However for some people it isnt easy loosing weight especially as the doctors keep pushing the "lower your calories"-diet & the real problem isnt just calories. Theres a REALLY easy and simple explanation for why movies that seem so similar to each other end up releasing very close to each other (Armageddon and Deep Impact is a great example, or Last Knights and 47 Ronin being another). Its because scripts for movies are bid on and its public knowledge whenever a studio purchases one. So when one company buys the script for say Armageddon (or whatever), all the other Hollywood companies know when this happens, and I GUARANTEE that the execs of those other studios will then be in a meeting where one will say something like "hey, X studio just bought this script, so obviously they must have done some research or something that tells them it will be profitable, we should find another script for a similar story and make that", so then they will bid on and buy the script for a very similar story/screenplay and then in a few years two VERY similar movies will release at around the same time. I actually dont mind it, since I love stories of all kinds and its often interesting to see two similar but different "takes" on the same style/type/genre of story (like Armageddon and Deep Impact) and even if I end up liking one of the movies much more than the other, its always at least intriguing to watch how different writers, directors, actors, SFX companies, etc end up doing their similar stories.

At 17:00 --> The answer to your question, Drinker, is quite simply..... both. Speaking from past experience: one can want, desperately, as all creatures do, to live......while also simultaneously seeing it as an impossibility without deep and unending suffering -scared and heartbroken because you want to live but you feel you HAVE to end it to end the suffering. I'm sure Brendan Fraser's character was expressing both these emotions: wanting to live, and trying to look up what his current conditions meant about his health, but then when he finds out it would require him to go to a hospital (implied: get expensive treatments), he is heartbroken and angry because he knows he can't without breaking his promise to himself to leave the money for his daughter. His natural desire to keep living and the fear and sadness at facing his own death........competing with him trying to do the only good thing he feels he knows how to do, which REQUIRES him dying. I think he feels/wants both: to live, but also to die because he is so alone, unhappy, and ashamed.

As a GenXer I have to say it’s my generation and the boomers to blame for young people having zero respect for the older generation now. We were raised by very strict parents that lived through WW2 and there was a militancy to parenting. We grew up in the best time of our country, where we didnt have to worry about war, and was far enough from WW2 that we didnt feel its effects. Our parents raised us with the right amount of freedom and strictness. We also grew up with the tech boom, so we easily were integrated with the tech that the older generations didnt fit well with, but also before the influence of social media. There is a reason you hear people insult or complain about boomers and millennials and genz all the time, but your comment is the first time I have heard anyone mention GenX in like 10 years. Also its the boomers whos parents lived through WW2, not genx.
@genmaicha.lapsang Жыл бұрын
@@ZillaTheTegu I don't think GenX get's enough attention or research. I'm from Canada and I think that GenX is the most well rounded and healthy of the generations. They somehow avoided become as toxic as either the boomers or millennials. One thing that kind of bothered me about this podcast and some of the comments is that there is a romanticization of the past. Yes, we learn from our elders on and individual level because the human condition doesn't change. BUT on a social level there is A LOT OF PROBLEMS with the boomer generation. They wasted so much money and wealth on useless tat and are way too trusting of those with power. They are also very VERY entitled as much as millennials are, the boomers just don't realize it.

@EvenTheDogAgrees Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Because what you get by focusing only on audience size is what we got now: every time a good show comes out, it gets axed in the middle of the story, because the unwashed masses don't care for entertainment that expects you to _not_ turn off your brain. Meanwhile, reality TV is doing great.

I think people are making a rather large assumption that the Avengers actually work for or are employed by Tony and/or the company rather than Tony just having re-dubbed his penthouse/building as "The Avengers Tower" and everyone is just crashing there and using his stuff. If you want to get REALLY semantic about it, the Avengers work for a branch of the US Government under S.H.I.E.L.D. So why isn't S.H.I.E.L.D. paying them?
@rhyscallinan5058 Жыл бұрын
I think they are, but it's a combined effort for both. Shield pays for them and gives them various accesses, and Stark pays for equipment, a place to group up and some techs like vehicles, weapons and devices. At least that's how it was explained in an old Avengers comic from about 25 years ago I read a while back.

My interpretation of The Whale is that it's a tragedy because The Whale is actually the daughter. The daughter was his biggest mistake because he was obsessed with her, and his obsession made her the way she was. Yet, despite all the evidence that she's a bad girl he's still delusional and believes that she's good. The ultimate irony is that when he dies, the way it's shown, he falls on top of her, and his weight crushes her. If he'd just stopped being so obsessed with his idea of who she was she would have been fine, or at least not killed by him.
@liamwright2510 Жыл бұрын
I really don’t think the thought of him falling and crushing her went into the script personally, I feel like if that was canon It would turn the film into a dark comedy 😂😂

The Whale - over eating at that level is a mental disease as much as Anorexia is. Some mask emotional pain through drugs or alcohol, others through over eating. Such people need, first and foremost, psychiatric care. I have struggled with this and have known others in the same boat. We are no more "victims of society" than any other addict. We are just human beings with internal struggles that overwhelm us. A good psychologist or psychiatrist can help. OA (Overeaters Anonymous) can help. Doctors and a good dietician can help. Going to the gym with a trainer or friend helps. Simple common human kindness - and tough love from friends and family helps. The character that angered me the most in this movies was the sister of his deceased lover. Rather than supplying healthy foods, she kept feeding him all this junk food. She was a nurse. She knew better. She had serious emotional problems of her own that involved keeping him unhealthy. She was a "feeder." It's an actual fetish. Considering the monstrous people in his life, this guy was doomed.

1:32:25 That's simply not true. Parodies means that a genre is still beloved. Y'know, beloved enough that you can blow a full movie budget on a film that relies on a film that requires that you know a bunch of other movies. Look at Star Wars, it's been parodied to hell and back by absolutely everybody and it only helped the IP. Don't think anybody's volunteered to make a sequels parody yet tho at a high budget.

The real best example of flavor of the month actor is Liam Neeson. He was pretty much at the tail end of his career. He had a family. I also believe his wife wanted him to stop acting for family responsibility. Then you get offered a franchise and a shit ton of knock offs. Imagine how much time Liam would actually be on set for some of those movies? 95 percent of action would be a stunt double on camera. He was an actual teacher so I'm sure has a good memory and can take the weekend before the start of shooting to memorize everything. I bet he's spending 2 to 6 weeks on set and getting 2 to 20 million for 20 films. From 2010 to 2020 I'll bet he mad well over 150 million

The discussion of the D&D film begins at 1:09:30 . Stops almost immediately, then discussion of "Can't bring back T'Challa unless using Multiverse" etc. due to the fact that neither the panel nor the pseudo-writers of the MCU know anything of the comic-book precedents & tenets set down since 1965 which allow more than 5 ways in which characters to rise from a deceased-state (and whingers don't get to say "we're only talkin' boot da movies ya git!" because the MCU films take a LOT from the comics going back before Instascam-addicted half-wits were born). The discussion -almost immediately - shifts to RRR. (edit: they get back to the D & D film around 1:23:00 .)
