Hello. I’m 59. An elderly lady taught me how to crochet when I was eight years old. My father died and this wonderful lady lived next to my mom mom. I figured out through the years that she felt sorry for me. She has no idea what she created in me because I never saw her again. I could only crochet a chain. Then finally found someone to teach me how to make a blanket. I still have the blanket. KZbin is so wonderful. Have learned so much. Have met so many wonderful people.

On your beginning of the rectangular granny, you went into one side of the beginning chain but the on the reverse, you wrapped the whole chain instead of doing the chain stitches. I suggest using a foundation sc instead of a ch stitch and working in both sides of these stitches. It gives a stretchy but firm beginning to the “grannytangle” instead of the open spaces you have in yours.

I suggest that you start sewing your squares together. If anything will cause you to stop crochet, sewing all those together all at once will do it! Sew a few together at a time, then make a few squares. I have crochet off and on for about 70 years. I bothered and begged my grandmother to teach me. Once I could do a bit, my mother helped teach me, too. My stash is out of control. I even have bags of yarn in my extra bathroom shower! Good luck on your projects. Many of us have lots of WIPS (Works in Progress). Get project bags and start having things together: Your pattern, yarn, lable from yarn, markers, little scissors, and project. Suggestion: use your phone to take a close-up photo of something from your project along with the crochet hook you are using. I usually don't have enough hooks of the correct size to leave the hook with every project, and I forget which hook I was using. I tried putting a note in the bag, but they kept falling out and getting lost.

I start my rectangular granny blankets by taking 3 of the exact type of 4 row squares you are making for your partners blanket and sew them side by side. Then I start the granny stitches around them. The squares become the middle, and the finished blanket is a retangle.

same.... except i use a 5 row granny square.... but 3 squares as the center of rectangle and work around those looks great even by alternating a bunch of grannies as the border to blend it all together.! great work and colors.

Similar to you, I learned to crochet as a kid, but I’ve only picked it up again in the past year, and also like you, I am currently obsessed with it, especially granny squares - blankets, cushion covers, hot water bottle covers, you name it. My daughter joked to me yesterday that her house is going to be entirely crochet as I keep making things for her (and her boyfriend’s dog). But I can’t stop now - I’m all in!

On your granny rectangle, the Secret Yarnery on you tube has a tutorial for the granny rectangle and she shows how to start the blanket and she shows how you can start the blanket so it strengthens the middle and that may help you with the spaces on your blanket. Have fun crocheting!🧶 I love all your makes.

Your work is beautiful and I am so happy to hear you are doing a temperature blanket, Sue Serio (weather lady) on Good Day Philadelphia does them and that is where I first heard about them. I have been crocheting for over 30 years and granny squares are still my favorites to do. I have crocheted on the Staton Island Ferry ( a nod to your crocheting on the plane). A suggestion.....if you feel comfortable start doing "lives" with your videos. What you do is first row work into the bb back bumps of your beginning chain then work into a circle follow it around on the chain you created by working into the back bumps there are different ways to do it. But that's what I do sometimes to create a tight oval. Also what you might also find helpful my favorite crochet channel Mikey he has actually made a few blankets starting just like yours his channel is called The Crochet Crowd, so you always could try his methods to fix the problem with the starting of the blanket. But honestly your pretty good 😊

Agree--when one suffers from SADD, a fire, a stash of both coffee and a gazillion skeins of lovable yarn,,is all we need to make it to spring! My mother taught me to crochet when I was very young. She copied projects by looking at another’s work and counting the stitches. I found her method frustrating so I determined to read patterns and expand my crochet vocabulary. I miss the times she and I did projects; me reading and doing..and her looking at my work and duplicating it. We always chose different colors and made different sizes, however we enjoyed our common creativity. I LOVE the Granny Square Revival so much, I laid down a knitting project to refresh my skill and clear out my thread stash. But alas, I need m o r e thread to finish out and tie my Granny’s together❣️😹

I usually do 5 projects at one time in 30 minute increments to force myself to take a break and stretch. Right now I have a blanket, a shawl, a cardigan and some socks going. I do a hat just to have a small project that I can finish in a day. I use Ravelry a lot to keep my project notes in and to manage my stash. Keep on crocheting, you have a good eye for colour!

Hello, I am watchin your you tub channel for the first time. I think it will be a year of the granny square phonomime. Everyone seems to be doing them. I never got into temperature blankets because It was too complicated for me to think about and follow through. Your idea is super great, I love it! You really broke it down for me and made it easier to think about. I also didn't do granny squares cause you had to connect them. Ugh, very tedious to do. They didn't have video's when I was growing up. Nothing like You Tub is today. I've taught some friends and colleges how to crochet. I've been crocheting since my great Auntie taught me when I was 4 or 5 yea old. I am now 66 and like you I started and stopped again and again. Anyway, my motto is practice, practice, practice. Try new things and step out of you comfort zone and go for it. I encourage you to be YOU and don't let anyone tell you that it isn't ok to crochet!! Dad didn't use weed killer till after we left home. It gave us a good work ethic. I enjoyed seeing your work. I make mainly blankets. I use different stitches. I crocheted a 12 round granny square blanket with a heart shaped center in red yarn, another was the pineapple granny square blanket, a 4 round granny square blanket with the joining color grey and finally a snowflake blanket in white and red which I am using as a holiday tree skirt. On my to do list for this year is a granny square jacket but am thinking worsted weight yarn will be too hot for me. 6:20 On the sage blanket, which I call a granny-tangle, I crocheted around the entire chain instead of piercing through it when I made one for a County Fair Art Exhibition. I didn't know what I was doing but I had seen them, and had not investigated KZbin yet. I started out and I didn't like the way it was going either so I think and Funk and tell my brain smoked and figured out this is what I would do. I made clusters around the whole chain, and used the chains at the end to make the end clusters using three chains to get around the corners. I made it long enough to tuck in over the pillows it's a queen size topper, a full size blanket, or a twin size spread... and it won a Blue Ribbon! I got word through a friend who was a judge that they were impressed with my color choices and pattern color changes and they could not figure out how I had done the center and we're intrigued. For my first public piece, I'd say it wasn't bad. I had made two very mismatched high top sneaker style moccasins for my son when he was about a year and a half and had not crocheted in about 15 years. Before that, it was about 15 years since I had learned to crochet in 5th grade, but never completed anything since I didn't have any encouragement except for to be given a skein, the book,,and a hook. I still have them all. Then when I came across them one day, I picked them up and made a shell shell/ sleeveless v-neck vest/blouse, and a really nice scarf. Then I spiralled. Oh! By the way what you can do to correct that spacing that you don't like right now is to just get a straight piece of yarn on a needle and weave it through there and sent it up tight and anchor both ends in somewhere where it won't pull oddly, and it should be problem over.

Came across your video on my YT recommended section! For the granny square/rectangle blankets, I usually will chain 4 and then connect the chain, creating a loop. I'll then crochet into that loop and use that as my "center." You could also do the magic ring as well, but the ring can be less sturdy for bigger projects like a blanket, or something that goes through the wash. I hope this helps! So neat seeing what you've worked on and all of the plants in the background

Make 3 granny squares . six rows each. Sees them together for the center of your granny blanket. Go from there and continue your square rectangle blanket around them. Its a very nice one. Try it. Got the. Idea from mama llama kayla. Channel.

You popped up in my feed today…I’m a crocheter too, and love all things yarn! As for the rectangular granny, check out the tutorial by Mikey at The Crochet Crowd. I’ve done rectangular grannies (love them!) and I’ve not ‘staggered’ the first round. Your temperature blanket is gorgeous…and it’s going to be mammoth!!! Fellow nurse here, from Michigan (nice design on your shirt😉). Look forward to catching more of your videos!!!

Idk if others have answered you about the start of your granny rectangle...... mine always looks a bit wonky like that. You can use some of your yarn and sew the gaps closed if you want it to look tighter. :)

I love your granny square temp blanket . currently wip is a granny square purse and a huge blanket I can't wait to finish and granny squares seem to work up pretty fast .I been crocheting since I was about 5 yrs old ,my grandma taught me, she'd be proud of me today.i taught all the girls in the neighborhood and they still remember.sure helps me from some food addiction and smoking.

Wow, that's amazing! I remember my mom teaching me when I was a kid (maybe 10-12 years old) and I never forgot the basics even if I didn't ever attempt it again for another ten years, and then took another ten year break! It's like riding a bike - at least the basics are!

I have been learning to crochet by watching youtube over the last year. There so many great teachers and so much more to learn. Your work is beautiful and I love your color choices. I’m addicted to yarn and patterns at this stage and definitely enjoying the hobby. Living a couple of counties north of you. Right now I’m working on cotton placemats (Lion Brand 24/7) with a filet design, a toddler blanket (Lion Brand Hue + Me) and a baby blanket with a self striping Mandala yarn but I am doing color-control. Happy hooking!

Happy hooking to you too! I love that expression!

You are still supposed to start a square with a center loop. You make it square or rectangle in the first set up row. I’ve never seen anyone start anything with a line. So that’s interesting.

I’m a knitter, but have been obsessed with crochet lately. I’m crocheting a blanket with large daisy squares. I love the large square blankets. Love your ideas and passion for crochet.

I love your projects. I thought I wanted to make a temperature blanket for 2022. Then I measured the stitch I wanted to use and mathed it out and realized it would have been GIGANTIC. Like, cover my living room, out the front door, across the smallish yard, and 2 doors down the apartments next door. Shot myself down on that one. 😅 Good luck with yours though! I like the color combinations. 😁

Hi Nick, I absolutely love the many projects you got going on and can absolutely relate to not finishing a project. I do switch so I don't get overwhelmed with one project. I have a garden of plants along with my goat farm to keep me busy. It's kidding time for babies (goats) now, so for me, crocheting is my Zen time to relax and create. The imagination of crocheting is priceless 🫶 can't wait to see more of your journey 🤗

I love the color combos on your granny squares. Right now I am making a corner to corner blanket with left over yarn for my dog. My next project is going to be a granny square blanket similar to yours with the white borders. As for the granny rectangle, I don't put a cluster of three stitches in one chain stitch. I crochet one double crochet in each of three chains, skip a chain and then repeat. It help prevents the gaps in the first round.

I think this is the year of the granny square for a lot of us. I'm actually making the modern granny square blanket from the Crochet Crowd right now, and his way of doing the starting rectangle may be helpful. I spent my first 12yrs in a town called New Hampton, which is part of Orange County, so when I heard you lived there, it brought back some memories. I like plants too so I look forward to following you.

New Hampton isn't far from me at all! I love it in this area! Been here about three years now.
