I have never seen a magic circle done like that before. I tried it and I love it! So easy! I also like that you give multiple size information and have the pattern on the screen as you demonstrate . It really helps with learning how to read patterns. Thank you for a great video. Your teaching style is great! Liz B

Thank you. I always worry that the multiple sizes will confuse people, but I also know that some people can not read patterns. So if they want a different size than what the video shows, they may be out of luck. I am glad the multiple sizes helped you.

I really appreciate how well you teach this. I’m a man who was taught to crochet by my grandmom and have just begun again after 50 years. Your instruction-both voice and video-is extremely easy to follow. Serious thanks for that. SO many other crocheter “instructors” go way too fast, or don’t clearly demonstrate step by step as well as you do. You’re great! Thank you very much! And…finally…do you have a favorite, simple, but unique baby blanket crochet pattern?

Hey Lindsay, thank you for posting this! I recently subscribed to your channel. I've been looking for some attractive and simple crochet patterns that work from the top down in the round, and that are also gender neutral, suitable for both men and women. I've struggled with other tutorials on other channels. I actually sat and watched this tutorial without actually making it, just to get an overview. It looks very nice! I also checked out the free written pattern and tried your recommended gauge swatch, which I'm very glad I did, as I needed to make an adjustment for myself. I'm going to give this hat a try... please pray for me (I'm still a bit shaken from my previous attempt elsewhere that resulted in a BASKET... literally a BASKET... lol) 🙏 I'm in Canada and I really want and need a NICE winter hat for myself, but would love to make some for my best friend (a guy) who is a hard working snow plow operator. I've made him some knitted hats, but have always dreamed of doing crochet! With regards to upcoming project ideas I would be interested in seeing, if you haven't posted them already: - large sized crochet cube storage basket, similar to the ones Ikea makes for bookshelves etc... aside from spring clean up, "stuff" around the house looking aesthetic would be an absolute delight, especially when working from home! - sturdy crochet grocery or shopping bags... as opposed to the lacy market bags with gaps, something sturdy, thick, practical, and durable would be wonderful for a realistic grocery run lol Thanks again! Fawn

Yes. It is because the third loop is only located on one side of the stitch. Also we are using half double crochet and if you don’t turn the work, then you seam will be diagonal and not straight.

You will need to work increase (crown) rows until the hat has the desired circumference then work side rows until you are 1.5-2 inches from the desired length then work the brim rows for 2 inches to finish the length.

Love the hat! Somehow I am getting an ugly seam at the join of the rounds. What am I doing wrong?
@WindingRoadCrochet

This can happen. Try making a very loose slip stitch. Also when you are done, sometimes you can block the seam out a bit.

u mean its the front loop? like when u do a invis decrease? why call it a middle bar?
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet 25 күн бұрын
Working in the front loop only and working in the "3rd loop" or "front middle bar is different. What happens is the front loop and the back loop get pushed down to create the ridge that has the iconic "v" of a chain stitch. Here is a different video that explains working in the third loop better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6mwoo2vf62fhaM If you only work in the front loop, you will only get a single line rib and not the ribbing that resembles "v"s at the top of the stitch.

I have a question...When doing the sides, for example, the baby, you say to repeat 1&2 until you have 12 rows total, does that mean total of all rows or 12 side rows? Love this pattern!! Thank you!
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet Жыл бұрын
I had to check to make sure. For the baby size you want to have a TOTAL of 12 rows. So that is the rows of the crown of the beanie (which is 6 rows for the baby size) plus 6 side rows to equal 12 rows total. I try to make sure I say or write total rows somewhere.

So, when you start the brim, should you be on the ribbed side or the smooth(er) side? I'm stuck at this part.
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet Жыл бұрын
The brim looks the same on both sides. So work the brim then is the ribbed side is in the center, just turn the hat inside out.

Thank you for this beautiful beanie! I'm trying to work on an adult size but a little confuse when I get to round 10. You had the beanie inside out when working round 10 but before you SL ST you had it right side out. I'm I missing a something here?

I might have flipped it for some reason. It shouldn’t matter. When you do the side rows we are going to only create texture on one side of the hat and that will be the outside of the hat.

This project has a back to it. Some people can slip stitch loosely to avoid the seam but I had a slight seam on my project.

How to get the magic ring?😭 I can't even make it😢😢😢 is there another way to do it?
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet Жыл бұрын
Yes. I use a non-traditional way for making the magic ring/circle. Here is a link to the tutorial for it, kzbin.infoaXqcxj9zkwg Or you can search on youtube for the magic ring/circle and find someone else's tutorial to make it that way... A third option is to Chain 2 and then work the whole first row into the 2nd chain from the hook.

I love this pattern so much! Thank you for sharing it! This is the first beanie I'm attempting to make after learning to crochet a month ago, and I'm getting pretty confused. I'm making the adult size, same yarn and hook size as you, and I still have 11 more rows total but its already big enough to cover my whole head. I've been counting my stitches and rows carefully the whole time to be certain, but I'm wondering, did I do something wrong? Did I somehow make too many rows? I have to redo it and I'm wondering if I should make a small adult but still worried it would be too large if I do. What can I do??
@WindingRoadCrochet

Since you are new to crochet, it is more likely that you have a larger gauge than what I have. Gauge is the number of stitches per inch. Some people crochet really loosely and others crochet really tight. We use gauge to help all crocheters to be able to crochet the same pattern. The way it works is that you start by making a small flat piece using the indicated stitch, then you measure how many stitches you have per inch. If what you get is different than what the pattern suggests, then you will need to either go up or down a hook size. The gauge for this pattern is 7 HDC X 6 Rows = 2 inches, so every 7 half double crochets should be 2 inches wide. If you have 6 half double crochet for every 2 inches you will have a larger hat. If you have 8 half double crochets for every 2 inches you will have a smaller hat. based on what you have told me, I am guessing you need to go down a hook size to achieve the gauge. Feel free to look up a youtube video to have them show you more clearly how to determine your gauge. This is something you will deal with for any pattern that size matters.

If I wanted to make a matching scarf do I just chain one and turn for the length of the scarf?
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that would work. You could work the half double crochet in the front middle bar for all the rows. This would result in ribbing on both sides of the scarf.

Hi. I just have a question related to this ...when you are saying 20rows for side part for adult..you mean total of rows with increasing ones? Or 20 rows of only side rows#9 total with increasing it will be 30 rows for adult) Thanks

@WindingRoadCrochet 8 ай бұрын
I looked at the pattern and it says 20 total rows, anytime I say "total" it will include the side rows and the crown rows.

Would you please advise me about the sizing, if using a 5 weight yarn?
@WindingRoadCrochet

I do not have calculations for that. I would just work crown rows until the circle is wide enough and then side rows until the project is long enough. You can find charts on line that tell you what the diameter should be for different sizes.

I have a silly question, when completing the side round for a child, we do 16 side round rows, correct? I just wanted to be sure when you said total that it wasn't the crown plus side
@WindingRoadCrochet

Total is the total number of rows in the entire pattern. So it should be 16 total rows (crown + side rows). Thanks for asking.

Why does my brim keep flaring out? It is goes out for a section and them in like a bucket hat if that makes sense. I have started the brim over and looked at other videos with post stiches but can't seem to do it right. Any suggestions?

I recommend for you to count as you do the fp stitch and the bp stitch , then count all stitches at the end of your row, I just made a hat similar to this ,and my stitch count was off by 2 stitches , so I was able to correct it by counting as I go ,. hope that helps you .

Good advise. It is always good to count your stitches now and again.
@WindingRoadCrochet
@WindingRoadCrochet Жыл бұрын
I agree with @marlawetherell8785 . Count your stitches after working a row to make sure you are not adding stitches. It is also possible that you are just working your stitches looser in this section. If the stitch count is correct, then try moving down a hook size just for this section.
