I think this is an example of Sonny almost breaking before the amnesia arc. He almost lost himself, but once he released all that negative emotion onto the serial killer- He's able to find himself again, remember who he is, and let go of the obsession that almost led him to beat the serial killer to death.

The moment he sees the woman in fear, he tries to reassure her (in his shaky condition) of his intent to help and at the same moment, begins to come around for himself as well.

This was the only real episode I remembered since the 80's. I was STUCK. I remember my thoughts were around crockets obsession, and he showing his side of weakness. I remember I felt so much for him, because I knew he didn't loose it.

The episode shares many similarities with Michael Mann's 1986 movie Manhunter, the first Hannibal Lecter film, which has an almost identical plot (an investigator struggling to retain his own sanity whilst delving into the mind of a disturbed criminal, who is breaking into people's houses, in order to catch him). Yes and I always thought that vice was a narcotics unit going after high end drug dealers, but some episodes turned out to be homicide cases. It was still an awesome cop drama series. Definitely the best of the 1980s.

Crockett going for two days without sleep in order to get inside the home invader's head was a bit scary, including the way he reacted when Castillo wanted him off the case, which, under normal circumstances, would only have resulted in a bit of grumbling, but nearly led to a meltdown. The meeting with the police commissioner was a bit intense. I loved the part where Castillo told Tubbs to stay with Crockett as long as possible and he didn't want him on the street in his condition.
