The iconic knife was created specifically for the movie by legendary Australian gunsmith John Bowring after the studio asked them to make an iconic knife for the film based on the Bowie knife. Bowring is also the gunsmith and armorer for series like Mad Max, Mission Impossible, Matrix and X-Men. Typically, the Bowie knife has a upward facing full brass guard instead of the Bowring's downward facing one half guard. Bowring's version also featured leather and twine instead of typical wood handle. Only two originals were ever created, given to Paul Hogan and one other person with the promise that they would never be sold. The film studio actually holds the copyright for the knife which is why no major company has made them! Little trivia tidbit!

Wonder why they never licensed the design out....I remember seeing a catalog in the 1990s that had replicas of the knives Gil Hibben and Jimmy Lile made for the Rambo movies, Terminator 2, and Total Recall.

I've been collecting knives for a while and I finally went and found myself a "Crocodile Dundee" knife. It is by no means accurate to the movie in any way, but the damned thing is massive. It is easily the largest bowie I own and I own some chunky bowies. It may not be a perfect movie replica, but it pleases me to no end to see it in my collection and think "THAT'S a knoife."

On the editing room floor was left the original take of this scene wherein Dundee whips out an S&W 357 Magnum, and well, you can probably guess the rest. But the directors wished to keep the movie more light and airy.
@discojelly
@discojelly 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gablesman888 Technically.. Dundee was visiting the U.S. Technically even if he DID own a handgun, he would not be allowed to have it unless some specific license visiting foreigners can get. It was the 1980s when this movie came out (When I was a kid)... Directors were less concerned about light and airy and more concerned with an over the top back woods Aussie who wrestled Crocs. Gun control by today's standards was not a big hot point topic back then. Most folks in America relied on Dirty Hairy and other action stars for that kind of situation the some dude who lives everyday by his knife in the outback comparing his knife to the short little switch blade was an epic idea. If you know Aussies ... they like to go big and go hard. Much like that character.

I remember when this movie came out, because I worked for a local cinema company. This movie stayed in our theater for almost a full year, including several months after it came out on VHS (this was before DVD young ones). A year! It was unheard of in this area, but it almost always sold out on most nights. At the time, I worked at the largest cinema in town (6 theaters), and it always played in theater 4. Theaters 3 and 4 were our largest, and had the best sound systems, so that music and the atmosphere, just magic.

Mick is understanding and compassionate. While teaching, "Ahh, just kids having fun" a lesson about men. And takes absolutely no offense. In fact as an elder in his tribe he is expected to impart this type of knowledge to kids growing up. From a certain viewpoint, it's the only real "job" he values. Mick teaches through story telling, as a warrior, tribal leader and sage.

Other way around. Thought it was great when I watched it at 12/13 years old in the 80s. As an adult I see it as cheesy with the "bad guys' " over the top scared acting, and I can see how Dundee was meant to be a total caricature of what Americans think Australians are, making fun of the American audience. Then the cliche ending that's been done 5,000 times before and after, with the "big fight/breakup/guy's got to run around after the lady to get her back/cue happy ending kiss scene and cheesy 80s closing music." Lot of 80s movies are better left in the 80s.

@@j.walker3498 I think the joke is that in the UK criminals use almost exclusively knives since more and more weapons over there are being restricted, so this sort of thing has probably happened a lot of over there.

Lucky for Dundee,none of them had a gun. But with that little switchblade,yeah,I can't imagine someone like Dundee would be fazed or intimidated. Even kangaroos are more dangerous than those guys! Ha! Ha!

@@JR-ju3kj I highly doubt Dundee would have cared about a gun either. Its not very hard to disarm someone. Especially they close. I learned it in just a couple hours of training. Someone like Dundee would have no trouble at all. He could probably throw the knife INTO the kid, before he managed to get a shot off

Well, HJ is an Aussie and a fine actor, but I don't know if he has that something special that made Paul Hogan so perfect for the part. Jackman was perfect as Wolverine. I just don't know if he'd be as good for the role of Crocodile Dundee.

"Just kids having fun." That line really defines his character imo. The fact that he stepped towards them as they were shows he was concerned but him being so chill and not wanting to upset his new "mate" by casually saying that shows he doesn't like violence and there's no reason to "hold a grudge."
