Steven Stills is one of the most underrated songwriters/guitar players/singers of all time.

Stills not only wrote this, but played EVERY INSTRUMENT and produced. That's EVERYTHING on this except for the two harmony vocals. He did that on most of the album, too. Absolute POWERHOUSE.

My mum and dad's song. My dad sang this in a pub to my mum, no music, when the power went out. Yes he was that good a singer. Before they were married. (married 48 years last Feb. He is officially my step dad but will always be dad to me). TUUUNE

I just LOVE to see new ears appreciate their music and this song! Brings me back to the late 70s driving around in my old Toyota pickup with my best friend singing this at the top of our lungs. Great memories. Thanks, and keep diving into their very deep collection. Also, just about any song off their CSNY album Deja Vu is worth a listen - I love Carry On.

In music, the word "suite" means that it has multiple parts much like a hotel suite has more than one room. So they told you up front, in the title, that it was going to be a multi-part song. I love the transitions between the sections of this song almost as much as the sections themselves.

Steven Stills wrote this song in order to win back the affections of Judy Collins after they broke up. She said she loved the song but had already moved on. Most of us can understand the heartbreak.
@wild62meg47 Жыл бұрын
Their harmonies are damn near perfect -- before autotune. The 4 sections of the song make it a "suite." For anyone who dosn't know, in music a suite is a set of pieces to be played in a series, in a particular order, to create a set. I love your channel.

Love the sound of CS&N They were one of the folk rock supergroups of the 60's-70's. They all came from previous groups. I had the album this song came out on. Other songs on the album are "Marrakesh Express", "Wooden Ships", "Helplessly Hoping" etc. Another great album is "Deja Vu" where Neil Young joined them. It has other hit songs such as "Teach Your Children", "Woodstock", "Carry On", "Our House" etc.

This was a revelation when they released the first album, utterly new and original, completely generated by the three artists, who all had success with other bands, the music spirited away from the factory fabrication of popular music, and speaking just to us, the newly turned on and aware. Two minutes and thirty seconds for radio play...screw that, let the music take its own space. We were dropping the expectations and dictates of straight society, with some anxiety, and the result was this, genius music;)

Classic! "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" takes the unrequited love song to new places. Sweet Judy with the Blue Eyes is Judy Collins, a singer who took the Joni Mitchell composition "Both Sides, Now" to the top of the U.S. charts in 1968. Song birds and angels supply apt metaphors for describing her singing voice. Collins also has intensely blue eyes. They seemed to sparkle when she sang her songs on television way back when I was a kid. Chestnut brown canary Ruby throated sparrow Sing a song, don't be long Thrill me to the marrow

Biz it was called a transition in my day. The song was about Judy Collins, Stephen Stills ex- girlfriend as he was trying to win her back. Judy was one of the most popular folk artists of the late 1960’s into the early 1970’s with a songbird kind of voice !

Wrote it after they broke up and he was trying to win her back. Took it to her on her birthday, sang it to her and she said, "We both cried. I said it's a beautiful song, Stephen, but it won't win me back." He gave her the Martin guitar and left. They stayed close through a LOT of ups and downs and are still good friends, even recording a few years ago.

Excellent reaction and commentary. Right on with this masterpiece by CSN. This group provided a large part of the sountrack to my youth. Loved this album and "Deja Vous". Still listen regularly to this day. I seem to recall that the "Judy" of the title is Judy Collins, Steven Stills girlfriend at one time. Judy was/is a very talented folk singer in her own right who happens to have the most AMAZING blue eyes! Perhaps you should have a listen to her beautiful song "Both Sides Now'.

Besides this song, I LOVE the cover art on this album by Joni Mitchell. Yes, THAT Joni! Judy in 'Judy Blue Eyes' is Judy Collins (no relation to Phil). She was a pretty big deal then as a solo singer. I believe Stills wrote this tune in an effort to win her back, but though she said nice song, her answer was a firm NO.

Oh, yay! Thanks for doing this one. I've been hoping you would. Funny, this has been a favorite of mine for decades but I never REALLY tuned in to how much the bass carried the piece and made the transitions smooth. Anyways, great reaction, fun song. I vote for *"Ohio"* for next song by Neil Young. Here's a *very* loose translation of the Spanish verse:. Someone else here might have better: Que linda me la traiga Cuba, la reina de la Mar Caribe. Cielo sol no tiene sangre ahi, y que triste que no puedo vaya, Oh va, oh va, va. [to me it wounds like "a-ja, a-ja" ---just an exclamation, but whatever.] What beauty cuba brings me Queen of the Caribean sea Sunny skies have no blood there How sad that I'm not able to go Oh go, oh go...
