The fact for short times they were able to tolerate each other, they did wonderful things. Graham might be the only one who never truly pissed others off. David got fired from the Byrds, Neil was in and out of Buffalo Springfield as Stills tended to do everything in the studio (which earned him the nickname "Captain Manyhands). Heck, when Stills and Young did their "Long May You Run" album tour (an album where Graham and David contributed some early stuff, but had to leave to finish their own album, resulting in Stills and Young wiping everything they did), Neil quit mid-tour and left a note saying "Dear Stephen, funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach. Neil."

You can see they were in love with each other then, a sort of embarassment of how good it's working, in love with the song, with the moment. For me, I love that it's totally live, Neil is added, and that they tuned down to C from the original key of D so their singing is more relaxed.

This is the song that brought Nash into the Crosby-Stills duo. As Nash remembers it, they met at John Sebastian's house on Lookout Mountain and he proceeded to listen to C-S sing this twice, the third time he joined in with harmony - and the rest is history.

It was the best harmony THEY had ever heard too! It was the first song they had ever played and sang together. One of them says they were at Cass Elliotts house, another says it was Joni Mitchell's house, when they all got together for the first time. They were at the kitchen table, (or dining room table, depending on which one is telling the story) and Stills played the song for them. Crosby said play it again, and added a bit of harmony here and there, as they learned the words. Nash said "Once more" and they all sang it together with all the harmonies, and realized they were going to make a GREAT band! And the rest is history!

Neal's Guitar playing makes the song even better. listen to his finger style playing. As a guitar player myself, I have a new respect for Neal's playing. This is even better than the original recording because of the acoustic guitar playing is so much better. Remember that Neal Young was not part of the band when they originally recorded this but he adds so much to this particular version of the song.
@blakeplissken2314
@blakeplissken2314 3 жыл бұрын
As the legend goes, Stephen stills wrote the song and he & David Crosby were singing it in harmony in Joni Mitchell's Laurel Canyon home (although this is debatable as some think that is was at Cass Elliot's house or John Sebastian's house). Graham Nash (formerly of the Hollies) asked them to sing it again, and on the third time, Nash added his higher harmony and they all realized that they had something special when singing together. In my opinion, this was the birth of Crosby Stills and Nash. As Tony Fozrod has said, Neal Young had not yet joined the band but he adds so much to this live version of the song.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young 🎻🎻🎻 You Don't Have To Cry*(Stills~a love letter to Judy Collins) LIVE 📺 September 6, 1969,The Tom Jones Show Beautiful acoustic guitars and 3 part harmonies *July, 1968 - "You Don't Have To Cry" was the first song CSN ever played together🥳 (at Joni Mitchell’s Laurel Canyon home.) Graham Nash: Stephen and David wanted to show me a song that they had worked on in two part harmony. They sang it once, I asked them to sing it again, they sang it a second time, I asked for another performance. On the third attempt I put my high harmony on and it sounded awesome. I knew in my heart that this was something I wanted to do for the next few years. The musical, social aspect of combining these three voices with the words that we had come up with was very exciting to all three of us. We knew that we could sing, that the sound was unique and that what we had to say was worth saying. And here we are 30 years later still doing it with all the energy of teen-agers!” ~ The Complete Guide To The Music of CSN&Y

I have tried to sing David Crosby's scat on the chorus, or Stephen's 'babe' inject. It is so musically hard! It must have taken alot of confidence to record this. It adds texture to both the music and raises questions about the lyric meaning. It almost suggests a dialogue as one is walking out the door. It's beautiful.

I just posted something similar; for a 3 part harmony, it is freaking IMPOSSIBLE to replicate! I’m a singer, I sang with a band in the late 90s, and the only song he and I could pull off was Helplessly Hoping. You Don’t Have To Cry? No way. We sang America, Eagles, Pure Prairie League, but CSNY? One and Done. WE’RE NOT WORTHY…nor shall we ever be. David Crosby, I’ll see you on a wooden ship in Summerland. Keep inspiring us, please. Thank you for the gift of you, that you shared with us. I am humbled.

He’s not a huge fan, but he knows I am, and it was so sweet. I have not reacted that badly since Jerry died in 1995. Superb. The music of these men was the backing track for some of my 1970s. It took me years to learn what this song is about. I understand it was addressed to Joni Mitchell, and the message was 'Don't let the pop music destroy you - like it destroyed me.' 'In the morning, when you rise Do you think of me, and how you left me crying? Are you thinking of telephones, and managers? And where you have to be at noon? In the long run it will make you cry, Make you crazy, and old before your time...

Ok; which song are we speaking of? Suite Judy Blue Eyes WAS about Judy Collins; I remember they had a fling, or an infatuation, or something. Joni Mitchell was probably an inspiration for some songs…but if you’ve ever seen pictures of Judy Collins, back in the day, with her pale, haunting blue eyes…yeah. Stephen Stills definitely wrote that song about her. If you were born after the early 70s, just observe, listen, and learn. Free love and the BEST MUSIC EVER! Love and respect to all of you. yup. that about sums it up. One could have turned up at any address along the canyon and had a similar experience. These four genuinely had a friendship and supported each other's need to feel out their own voices and solo gigs which has to help. We could guess at the underlying mojo all day, but in the end they always looked happy together onstage (1970 NY stuffed into a suit in a studio notwithstanding).

This was from a guest appearance on the TV show "This is Tom Jones" very shortly after Neil Young came on board. Note Greg Reeves playing an upright bass! The follow-up to this song on the show was "Long Time Gone", and it did not go well. Tom Jones took over the lead vocals and was overly dramatic, which caused Stephen Stills to respond by singing even more dramatically, and it went downhill from there. After this sub-par performance, the band decided they were not going to perform on live TV anytime in the near future! (Reference: "CSNY", by Peter Doggett)

What a masterpiece. This was a very special moment truly. With all their problems, this was Supposed to be.. They actually manifested this perfect Creation together… Talk about a Divine Contract to achieve it… They Did It ! Doesn’t actually manifest very often in the Physical . Wow. They transcended their Human momentums and created something divine ; Something above themselves in this Shiny Moment. This is what We Can all Achieve when we come together. We can change This World ! ⭐️👏🏻 Truly in All Realms of Human Endeavors. 🌈

I was 19 years old when this came out, and was a mediocre guitar player that had only been playing for 3 years,, so I had just gotten a gig with a band playing bass for them (while I continued to work on my guitar skills which had a long way to go ).Then I heard the album that this song came from. The quality of CS&N's first album absolutely blew me away especially considering half of the stuff getting airplay on the radio at the time was still bubble gum and similar junk. The first Crosby, Stills and Nash album was one of the biggest influences on me period. I learned about quality lyrics and harmony, and learned that acoustic guitars were definitely not out of style !

This was for a TV appearance on the Tom Jones show - not excerpted from a longer set. There is another song, though: they also did "Long Time Gone" with him joining in.
