I bought the .22 version last night and only fired 3 shots before I disassembled it. I plugged the piston with a small dowel, crazy glued both ends and polished up the residue. I also made a 5/8 brass spacer to add more compression to the spring. I chamfered the opening a little more on the plastic muzzle protector to clean it up a bit, shaved off the factory sights, mounted a scope and dialed it in. I don't have a chrony, but I'm blasting clean through a 5/8" fence board from 25 meters and getting quarter size groupings. Not bad for a $100 Wal-Mart gun.

awesome m verno! glad to hear the great results with your new pellet rifle. you should be around 650 fps or so. so you have enough gun to do some serious shooting and hunting. now start learning the trajectory of your particular rifle and pellet combo and stick with the same pellet and you will get to know where the pellet will go in comparison to the reticle in your scope for different ranges. or you can adjust and gather DOPE for your rifle and adjust instead of holding over. well have fun and please subscribe if you havent already. thanks for the comments.

Well the jb weld is in the hole so I can't see it even crumbling but one bullet proof way to plug yhe hole and I think is the absolute best way that will never fail would be to drill the hole bigger then tap it and red loc tite a set screw in the hole. That would be the proper fix and maybe ill do a video on doing this the right way. Comment and let me know if you wanna see it done.

i'm thinking the pressure spike is correct but with out a pellet to seal the breach there is open path out the barrel. so i'm thinking the restricted airway holds back the volume of air following the pellet down the barrell. i'm quessing like a slow leak as apposed to large puncture?? what type lub are you using on the piston and pressure chamber?

I'm wondering if a rivet would work as well. Jb weld tends to get a bit crumbly if applied to thin and super glue will foul up the barrel. Any thoughts?

Thats what i thought of JB weld. A hardened dried epoxy on a rather soft type plastic might shift or become unattached after several jolts of spring slamming . Air then possibly seeps way through hole. What about a hobby plastic Hot glue gun using Gorilla type glue sticks with a plastic rivet or plastic insert so plastic adheres to after hot glue melted to seal hole for permanent seal? Just curious , in case its needed on my air rifle , and suggestions ?

+Antoua B It would just damage the spring because you'd bend it, then it would bend back once cocked, and no doubt a little weaker that before and likely bent too. The oem full power spring can be bought from Crosman directly, or if you're not in the US then thru other sources or an aftermarket spring like the Vortek RINGET posted. The hard part about aftermarket is you need to know the size you want and how to make it work, because I doubt any carry the exact size.

+RINGET421 That's the hard part I mentioned. As far as I know Vortek only has one the same OD, and it's weaker than the oem full power. The two others I know of that will work are 780125 and 790128, but the 790 doesn't fit all pistons b/c it's so fat, and neither fit the guide so you have to improvise. The oem Crosman is cheap and fits. Installing a nitro is an option as well, if you trust it to last.

If available, why not simply replace the holed seal with the correct replacement? Adding a bolt to the seal would add a lot of weight, effecting the piston acceleration and deceleration. And would there be clearance for the bolt at the end of travel? A bolt wouldn't stay secured for long, and the damage would be considerable. We can't escape it: Solve a problem = create a new problem. Good point on not being able to shim the spring too much before the spring binds.

add a old Chevy valve spring to it and it will lob the suckers out at 850feet per second and smoke will come out of the barrel from the oil self igniting under the pressure. that's what i did, and could tag cinder blocks at 125 yards with out much effort but after that valve spring was added the seals at the breach only held for about 1000 shots, and it is to much of a hassle to get new ones as i live far away from the supply bunker that has the stashes.

@BROTUNED 9 жыл бұрын
420BluntOne nitropiston guns use compressed nitrogen to generate the power. basically an air spring. if you have a spring piston rifle you could drill a hole but you are just de tuning the rifle to have less power. if you drill a nitro piston it wont work at all.
@chevota400
@chevota400 8 жыл бұрын
+420BluntOne The oem "full power" spring is ~.730"OD and .122 wire with 35 or so coils. Crosman has several different coil springs to reduce power, just as they have different pistons, and in case a hole. Yes you could drill your own hole, which will reduce the power, but it's a bad way to reduce power, negative side effects. If you want to drop power you can use a lighter spring and/or shorten the spring spacer. The spacer is 1.5" long, and if you remove it on a full power (18ftlb) gun it'll cut power in half. It shorten the spacer/make a shorter one to adjust power as needed. The nitro is a spring, a gas spring. The gun in the vid was not a nitro. If you want to reduce power in a nitro gun they sell a weaker nitro spring. It's 2/3rds as strong as the standard one.

I would think the only difference in the 495 and 1000 is the spring and limiting hole. so by plugging it you can get a bit higher velocities. as for wear I would assume that the higher compression would actually be better than having little to no resistance against the piston as it slams into the end of the tube. by adding a spring it would theoretically be the same as the 1000 fps gun. this is just my opinion based on things I've seen and done

It is my understanding that the Canadian version has a hole in the piston to allow some of the air to bleed off when firing, reducing the pressure so that the pellet travels under 500 feet per second. The current anti-gun Liberal Government allows the federal para-military RCMP to make gun laws so an air rifle is considered to be a deadly lethal weapon if it fires a pellet over 500 feet per second. If a Canadian version does not have this hole, then I am assuming that the manufacturer has now reduced the spring length and strength instead to reduce the pressure. I would assume that a longer and stronger spring would boost the power to over 500 ft per second. This would be considered a federal offense in Canada punishable by prison time, fines or the seizure of any other guns a person may have and would likely mean a ten year ban on owning any firearms legally if that person did not have a valid federal firearms license which requires renewing every 5 years. However, I doubt the police are going around checking such things. They have much more serious things to do with their time.

No, holes in them now. I bought one a few months ago from Walmart and have researched it widely. It has the same piston as the 1000 with no hole and just uses a weaker spring. Order a spring online (can't remember the name of the guy in Quebec) but you can order a spring from the 1000 which is heavier and longer. You don't have to change the tophat or anything else, just the spring.

just started modding phantom 495fps. don't have a crono but functionally the rifle is noticeably better. 14.3 grain pointed pellet. so 4 10 cent pieces for spring shims(don't have a new spring yet) and super glued a bamboo toothpick in the piston hole(it works and i can drill it out easy). results: prior to tinkering i could only hit a electrical box cover plate with lucky shot at 35+/- ft. that,s the range on the box. now i can hit it every time and, befor etinker it would remoce the rust only, now it dents the plate approx 3/64 inch deep and there is a bump on the opposite side. no crony test but impact wise it has punch already. and it has better trajectory i think based on the consistent target strikes. the gun is already at the limit of the cheeky red dot toy sight. it needs a scope. next mod will be interesting. has anyone messed with the air flow to the pellet? will it help? does crowning the barrel help on these pop guns?
@BROTUNED
@BROTUNED 10 жыл бұрын
not to sure about crowning the barrel unless there is a problem with it and if you were to do the crown i would set it up properly in a lathe and it has to be concentric to the bore not the barrels exterior. so it would most likely cost you more than the rifle is worth. and i haven't tried to change the port diameter or shape but it is quite possible that it could effect the pressure curve. but i would have to look into that a bit more scientifically. i'm almost thinking that the port is that size for a reason possibly building a pressure spike. but thats just a guess.

RINGET421 I wouldn't think so - Crosman has been trying to figure out a way to keep people from doing this (and other) mods for ages, while keeping costs to a minimum - so far to no avail. The best bet is to just purchase the 500, order a 1000 mainspring & piston at the same time, (if you search around this should total about $170) and just be glad you've got a relatively cheap, accurate & powerful .22 - all without the 'red tape'. Life is all about give and take, & there's a lot to gain here IMO. Oh yeah, & have your PAL and all that fun stuff. :)

+RINGET421 one of the first steps i have heard that a lot of people do to gain velocity is to use a flammable liquid such as light grade fossil base motor oil behind the pellet [dieseling] since synthetics and silicone lube are less flammable. this approach has its own drawbacks none the least of which and especially when there is a hole in your piston LOL however this also leads me to the topic of this video having increased velocity rather unscientifically without stating major facts such as the fact that after assembly there will be excess lube in the compression chamber which will burn at each firing and add velocity so the immediate chrony results are possibly not indicative of real world, lasting increases. my factory new 495phantom.22 did not have a hole in the piston and shot 800feet per second for many shots until the factory lube wore off and then was very anemic shooting under 490fps. this video has definitely added permanent velocity but the large effects listed might well be temporary effects. great video, thanks for sharing

Yea, thats what i was thinking when i seen that "495 fps" number, Canada . I have the Crosman phantom .177. Found it abandoned and in process of restoring it. Hopefully it'll work after i take it test out of city.

@@sammyhooligan803 i replaced my main spring and got my .22 phantom to 670fps but the recoil is so bad that it severely affects accuracy to the point that hitting something is as likely as with one of those fairground cork guns lol. I still have it but have moved on to bolt action Co2 .22 rifles now which can be tuned to very high levels and have virtually no recoil at all, gas powered rifles are so much more accurate than break barrel spring rifles, they also have much longer barrels in the same package size due to not being break barrel and the breech being all the way back above the trigger which also improves accuracy. You can land a pellet on your previous pellet from quite a distance with gas powered bolt action rifles be they Co2 or PCP because of how accurate they are and having virtually no recoil at all, so quiet with a suppressor on them as well, just a feint puffft from the rifle, they need a suppressor though as without one they make a insane BANG when fired! I have not fired my Phantom in at least a couple of years, i should really return it to stock power and sell it as its literally gathering dust!

@@stevefox3763 Yep, i can see what you mean. I have the Crosman Heritage .22 c02 .22 , rifle , shoots very calmly and accurate being a c02 . Compared to my Beeman breakbarrel .177/.22 combo i also own, i prefer the Crosman co2. Although , Beeman has more power for .22 and .177 the Crosman can shoot high velocity light weight pellets with probably more than 600 fps speeds .. Only thing is cold temperature / weather effects c02 power and breakbarrel preforms with same power . So different situations can be what to choose . I currently restoring an abandoned Crosman .177 Phantom i found recently , taking a little time to get out to test fire it, so far every thing looks ok after cleaning meticulously ,lol. Thanks.
@stevefox3763
@stevefox3763 2 жыл бұрын
@@sammyhooligan803 The lightest pellet is not always the best with Co2, its the way Co2 expands allowing a heavier pellet to be pushed to a higher speed where a lighter one would have exited the barrel while the Co2 is still expanding. My Co2 rifles destroy the Phantom on power, even with its more powerful spring, they are modified and tuned and pushing over 700fps with 16 grain pellets. One is running two disposable 12g co2 capsules and only gets about 12-15 shots but the other is running a paintball bottle and your bored before that needs re filling lol. I know what you mean about temperature and Co2, thats what 3D printer bed heating elements and a 12.6v lipo pack are for :D

@@stevefox3763 Yea, i see what your saying. Modification can improve different air guns. I never actually did any to my current and/or past guns, although might try a few basic on my crosman 2240 if it increases velocity,upgrade to steel breech, longer barrel . Anyhow , airguns are fun and a great hobby but, i have to learn more on "DIY" to possibly save on repair because eventually something will need to be fixed /replaced on one or all in future . Thanks.

ya it would have to be luck to cause if you hit a rib that would be the end of the killing power. so it would have to go between the ribs and enter at least 2 to 3 inches and i think it would die back in the woods someplace but i was thinking more like 50 or 60 yards max. not sure what the velocity would be at the 50 to 60 yard mark maybe ill test that out this spring. get a good 50 yard zero then shot through the chrony
