Excellent topic. I spent the first 20 years of cycling doing minimal cross-training. As a result, I had strong legs but no core strength, no upper body strength, and extremely tight hamstrings. I've since started doing whole body flexibility, mobility, and strength exercises and it's helping to improve my cycling. I can stay in a low position for a long time without the usual back pain and fatigue that used to accompany such awkward position.

For the "do something hard every day" advice I can highly recommend cold showers / cold water swimming.

Hey thank you for the information I would like to ask about cross-training and frequency, since it's often stated that to improve at cycling you have to train 3 times a week or more, I would like to know if I only train cycling twice a week, but I'm exercising 5 days a week doing things like swimming, rowing, running, rock climbing on the other days, will my cycling fitness improve at all or do I have to do 3 days a week even with cross training?
