Crossley Piston rings. Stuck. Disaster??

Mr Man Cave, please put rings back in the top.... You are going to all this work, and then you are scrimping on the bits that should, yes should, be in the lump. Slow down, we can all wait for the next vid. Its not a race. We all still love ya big man! But please keep the engine true....... you have got another one sitting in the yard..... just a thought.... Cox & turner make piston rings probably have them in stock

Get a piston ring expander for a start. It's impossible to work on them without it, and they are quite easy to snap.

If this engine is as rare as you say, isn't it worth new piston rings and a new head gasket ? I couldn't put an engine back together knowing parts are missing.

Hi Adam please don't put the engine together without the top rings There are many people watching your channel and i think you would let them down as well as yourself I know its only a stationary engine but it deserves re-ringing I'm sure the rings are available Thanks for the videos

don't leave the ring out of the top groove move the third ring to the top otherwise the ring groove will become part of the combustion chamber not a plan .Put some shim round the piston to slide the ring up.

Looking at those stuck piston rings, my first thoughts were to use an air-line into the ring gaps. If that failed, use a pressure washer, which is ideal for getting into tight spaces.

Would putting the piston minus the conrod in an ultrasonic have helped to free them off do you think?

I have found that gummed rings will free up if the piston is soaked in gun wash or MEK (methyl ethyl ketone). I make ring compressors from a bit of sheet tin or aluminium, roll it around the piston and fold up the two edges so they can be gripped with pliers or mole grips. In a pinch you can use a zip tie to compress the rings.

Not hating on you but you didn't get the piston hot enough, you need it smoking hot, if you can keep your hand on it it's too cold. If you've not got a ring compressor try long thick cable ties to compress the rings.

plastic waste pipe makes good ring compressers, come in loadsa sizes

I would only have 1 ring per groove. Modern engines have good clearance. File the ring ends 1 mm 40 thou gap is good. You know now you have a lathe get some malleable cast iron and machine up some new rings. Machine to suit the dia, then heat treat by spreading the ring gap after cutting (spacer). Much of this info can be found on YTube. You can use an old disk brake for some cast iron.

Adam, if you are Adamant you're leaving rings out (Sorry)! , don't make it the top set, move all the top 4 ring sets up to fill the top groove. IE leave the 4th groove down empty.

I found that if you use a steamer it would have moved the rings Large bean tin and a wallpaper steamer Nice on buddy

Use a big jubilee clip to fit the rings and do it one ring at a time. jim in NZ

Not telling you how to suck eggs but please be careful with that old paint adam if it contains led can get led poisoning so make sure your wearing the right breathing apparatus mate specially with that head gasket asbestos. Engines looking good for mrs mancave making a nice job buddy 😅

Would of it been good idea to get the engine hoist and lift the engine block up on it end, more chance of dropping the piston down in the cylinder let gravity do the work,,,,,,,,, great vlog but never seen a piston refitted with rings missing would that really be OK without them..... 👍👍👍👍

No don’t take those rings out, if you break one you can’t replace it easily , free them up as you did, put some wd40 in the grooves and she will be apples

Oops !, I would have put that in a bucket of petrol or diesel, let it soak for a while, rings should come free, no need to be hammering them, no wonder you broke them using a hammer and punch !. I know, everyone’s a critic, but, rings are brittle and don’t like brute force.

Leaving out the top ring will be a disaster it'll damage the top of the piston. You should be able to get a set off rings somewhere. There is a top and bottom on all rings when assembling if you haven't a ring squeesers a wide cable tie might work .

@EdwardEngines top sometimes will be stamped on the ring or there might be a dot. If there is no marking the ring will have a slight champer which faces to the top

Adam it was designed to have rings in the top Grove of the piston dont think its the best idea you have had putting it back to gether with out the top rings they are available as one guy on here said
