Finally decided to switch to UniFi two weeks ago. I grabbed a USW pro PoE and two of these guys to add to the house. I’m finally getting the one thing I cared about- maxing out my 400mbps internet connection from every point in the house, and at least 200mpbs around the property. These things do phenomenal, couldn’t be happier. I went very overkill, but merry Christmas to me. 💀

I upgraded from the UAP-Lite to U6-Lite today and after some tweaking to the settings I saw a 60% increase in download speeds on wifi over my gbit internet connection. My M1 MacBook Air went from ~340 down to ~550. I was thinking about waiting for the U6-LR but I have a modest home network and didn't think it was the worth it. I have a small house lot in AZ and I would get decent wifi coverage throughout the property but now I get strong signal 2 houses down. Very impressed with the U6-Lite.

Definitely a good AP for home network upgrade. The results for the AP Pro are expected because it works on 2x2 streams instead of 3x3, so you can get about 433mbps on AC standard. The AP can of course access to 650mbps realistically but with a wifi client usine 3x3 streams

Tests were not perfect, but damn revealing. I look at it this way. Going from the PRO wifi5 to Lite wifi6 you save KWH, get more speed, more network expand-ability and a well built reliable access point. Normally I am a Cisco fan boy but with the free controller software that I am running in a LXC (Linux Container on Ubuntu) on a Raspberry PI that is also m PIhole server and network test box, running all running on POE (Including the PI with a POEhat), I am spending 30 watts to run 2 AP's and a controller. Sick. I think this review was excellent by the mix of software and hardware and was well planned using IPERF. Ten thousand people could come up with ten thousand reasons it could be better but this is just a fantastic general environment and most should be able to extrapolate from it. Very good explanations and very good job explaining what you were doing and why. 9.7/10 if I was rating this!

Hi! I have an U6-Lite at home which just replaced my nanoHD. The throughput is essentialy the same on both devices arround 600-700Mbps. I tested them on my S10 and on my Ipad pro 11. As long as those clients have 2x2 MIMO antennas there will be no difference. Of course if you source an let's say 4x4 MIMO PCIe card for your PC then I can imagine the througput would be slower on the U6-Lite. What I also noticed that it's somehow snappier than my nanoHD, i suppose the latency is smaller on the newer device. Hope this helps!

This was AWESOME! Thank you!! Some feedback on my experience... I had to replace an aging UAP last month and had the opportunity to purchase the U6. I decided against it and replaced the UAP with an AC-PRO for the following reasons: - I get 450 on my AC-PROs. (Dunno why Crosstalk was so low. Might be 5Ghz settings) - Wifi6 was updated in late 2019 to Wifi6e which introduces a brand new 6Ghz frequency (waiting to future proof). Hardware expected 2021. - I dont have a lot of clients and only have one wifi6 client. Love your show!!

I've had a pair of U6-Lite APs running since June when they came out on early access and they've been phenomenal through and through. Plenty of tweaking was done over 6 months to get them to this point of course but I love mine and the price point is excellent. However, I'd like to note in early access both of mine came with a POE injector. Considering this is in fact a "Lite" Access point, you can likely assume more of these will go to Pro-Sumers while the other higher end higher density APs will go to commercial installs where they may have big POE switches, so it wont matter as much as it does with this device. Bad move on their part in my opinion.

Great video, great test, but yes, I agree with the others: We REALLY need to see this same testing done with standard WiFi 5 (ac) clients, since it's going to be a lot slower to bring all the clients up to WiFi6 than it will to just replace a few access points. Excellent review, Chris, as always. A lot of thought went into those tests, so thank you for making the output relevant and more “real world.” I saw the U6-LR-US AP’s were available for pre-order last week, so I ordered two for my home. Can’t wait to get them in place and test them out. I have about 40-45 wireless devices throughout the house, and the nanoHDs have been working great, but I like staying a little more on the “bleeding edge” of technology. 🙂 I’m really looking forward to your review of the U6-LR. Suggestion: I think it would be awesome to see how the nanoHD compares to both the Lite and the LR, as well.

Extra thumbs up for using multiple clients in different places. I have a few thoughts that potentially could improve the following review or provide an interesting perspective. 1. When you tested with all clients dowloading the video files at the sime time, a baseline with all four clients connected over wire would give an interesting perspective on the speeds 2. A comparison with the nanoHD to see what the MI-MIMO does would also be interesting, expecially for the review of the Unify 6 LR. Idealy, add the AC Lite and maybe the AC HD as well. 3. Since most clients today are still WIFI 5, it would be interesting to add a WIFI 5 client to the mix. Looking forward to your review of the Unify 6 LR!

Thanks for the review, must have been a lot of work. As some comments already pointed out I would not consider this a real Wi-Fi 6 AP, as in the 2.4 GHz band it still uses the 10 year old 802.11n standard. Sorry, but when investing in Wi-Fi 6 I would consider this a no-go. Also, this AP will never be able to get Wi-Fi Alliance certification. As for speeds: The 1.5 Gbit/s over the air is always considered aggregated for up- and download. When talking about Ethernet wire-speed this would compare to 2 Gbit (1 up 1 down), so that would not be the bottleneck. Ubiquiti does not mention details about the maximum number of resource Elements (sub channels) for OFDMA, which is an important factor for Wi-Fi 6.

The real advantage of 802.11ax aka WiFi 6 is the more efficient usage of the 2.4 GHz spectrum thanks to OFDMA etc. *IMPORTANT* -> All Unifi WiFi 6 products thus far only support WiFi 6 on the 5 GHz band. They don’t state this clearly enough. A lot of people will be quite disappointed... It will improve speeds on the 5 GHz band of course over 802.11ac Wave 2, but the 5 Ghz spectrum had enough reserves anyways. 2.4 Ghz on the other hand would really benefit from a more efficient usage of existing spectrum over time, when enough radios use 802.11ax and thus OFDMA. In my opinion, waiting for WiFi 6E capable APs and full support ax support on all of them, 2.4, 5 and 6 Ghz, would be the better option.

It's just sad that the unifi 6 lite doesn't support wifi6 in the 2.4GHz spectrum (it only support. 11n in the 2.4GHz band) which negate the benefits of the better efficiency for the most crowded band with IOT device

Couple days ago, I’ve bought a bunch of Unifi stuff since I’m upgrading my home network. The AC Pro is part of my items. After seeing this, I might just return and get the Unifi WIFI 6 Lite adapter instead.

802.11ax is not only about High Density and IOT. If you want connect IOT to Wifi6 your device must support 802.11ax. 802.11ax is more efficient and use OFDMA radio access, and also more QAM up to 1024. Here you can increase capacity more than 35% than usual AC.

I got 3x U6-Lite, and 1x U6-LR my result with U6-Lite is about same as yours, biggest difference I see is the 5GHz Channel Width can be set up to HE160 and even on older AC device I see much faster speed open speed test I am getting 600Mbps on a iPad Pro 10.5 (AC).

Thanks Chi’s, this was a really useful video as I’m looking at replacing my home network with UniFi gear. I would also be really be really interested in some additional comparisons involving mobile devices, and I’m looking forward to seeing you testing the LR access point as well as future ones. Thanks.

Do you see these improvements if your devices are mostly wifi5 though? Will you still benefit from the mu-mimo in this case? And would you need to replace ALL access points or if you replace a couple will those points improve (assuming they are wired to the source).

Great to see these rolling out. Maybe we'll get a WiFi 6 UDM soon. I love the idea of these dedicated APs, but since I can't run ethernet cable in the walls in a rented apartment, this sort of setup is beyond me for the moment. Do you think WiFi 6 will help with network performance/interference reduction in an apartment building? There are so many wifi networks in this building I can't actually get a complete list of them--it changes from moment to moment depending on which signal is the strongest. Thanks for putting this together!

If you have drywall, just hang it high on the wall in the living room above coaxial outlet and all you need to do is drill small 1/4” and fish it straight down to preexisting outlet and simply swap plate for double gage plate with coax and rj45 keystone adapters. On AP space area terminate cable with rj45 connector inside wall bracket. Unless you have firewall stud or insulation’s making it impractical. Then when you move out patch the little holes for AP and swap back old coax plate. Or just run wires outside and use cable mold cover.

Does the vertical orientation for range hold true with the uap-ac-pro? I have a couple at my daughter's house as a wireless bridge until the rain stops so I can run some cable outside. I guess I can just test it and see.

Decent performance for the price. But WiFi 6 with an Netgear and ARRIS branded Router I can get over 900mbps over WiFi on my 11 Pro Max and 12 Pro Max in the same room. My NanoHD I get around 600mbps on the iPhones and just over 700mbps on my Laptop in the same room.

Hey Chris. I think this is dead simple but ultimate test you can do! Just do ping test simultaneously on your clients. This will reveal the OFDMA Technology performance which is one the major upgrade against older generations of Wi-Fi. Because one of the major benefits of this generation of Wi-Fi is improvement in multi-user environment latency. Just perform pings as fast as possible to one of your local systems. the NAS system maybe. but as I said, pings should be manipulated to be transmitted in minimum available milliseconds, to show us the real difference between WiFi ax and ac Thank you

Am planning on putting together a UniFi network at home. Been debating whether I should wait for the UniFi 6 stuff or just go with the existing HD stuff. You answered my question. Now I need either an In-Wall or something like the FlexHD. Hopefully they realease a Wi-Fi 6 Flex or the UniFi 6 In-Wall comes back in stock soon.

About the issues with a x1 Wifi card in x16 slot: This may be down to limitations in that particular motherboard. While not exactly similar, I had to give up on using a RAID controller card in the x16 slot on a mATX board - the BIOS seemed to expect anything plugged in to be a graphics card. While the card worked and ESXi recognized it, it was impossible to get into the configuration utility during boot.

I would like to see a more comprehensive lineup of APs old AP like the Lite, nano etc. Also, speedtest from mobile devices/tables, phones etc if you can to better show the performance gains. But overall this is a great in depth video.

Most clients I have are still 2.4GHz or 5GHz on AC, they don't support WiFi6 - it would be great to incorporate that too. I used to have the old 2.4GHz only APs (2 left only) and on replacement with UAP AC PROs, I noticed a significant improvement in speed and roaming performance. Likely due to the 'AI' optimizer working better with the newer stuff. I have the AC Lites at my parent's place (2 of them, 1 per sub-building), my house only has AC Pros; I think the light model would be great for new installs and the price is pretty awesome. Unsure if there is a WiFi6 'pro' version + what the price of that would be. I've not checked EA for a bit as due to the human malware I can't buy anything here without 3x costs. Appreciate the research/comparisons, it shows the newer standard has a lot of potential and newer phones are likely to take advantage first.

I personally don't have too many devices on my network, only about a dozen at most. However, I struggle with speeds a lot due to devices on other networks. In my apartment, my devices see 30-40 other WiFi networks, and they are all using the wide channel so they are clumped on the two available 5GHz channels. I struggle to get over 10mbps outside the room the access point is in. Even 10 feet from the access point and line of sight, I get up to about 40Mbps. I'm hoping WiFi 6 will eventually improve apartment WiFi once everyone is using it.
