This was the best, most informative, in depth detail oriented video I have ever seen that had me focused the entire time, and answered every single question I could have possibly come up with. I was so set on wanting the Crosstrek, but watching this video show the vents and heated seats in the back, power trunk, power seats, now I really need to rethink what I want. PLUS omg you're in idaho!! I am too!! Thank you for this video!

@@cantthinkofnameyeah7249 The Sunroof, Harmon Kardon sound system, and power drivers seat are options not standard on the Wilderness, everything else is pretty much standard except for Navigation, that is not available at all on the Wilderness, but you can use your phones navigation by using Apple Carplay or Android Auto depending on the phone you have.

i just picked up the crosstrek wilderness. VERY happy with it.. very nice ride for a smaller car. well made, and lack of turbo is what i wanted, fewer issues, maintenance. given it is a smaller, lighter car over the outback, turbo really isn't necessary.

It's funny - whenever I drive my OBW for a while, I start daydreaming about getting something else. The CVT is uninspired and the stereo ('22 model) is awful. But then I watch someone like you give a review of an OBW (and/or compare it w/ something else like the CW) and I think: "It's not so bad. It looks great. Has awesome features. Does everything I *need* it to do. I'll keep it." It really isn't a bad car at all... it's just frustrating that it falls short of perfection due to decisions that didn't have to be made. Regardless, thanks for the video!

You’re spot on! There’s a few features that could be better, but with upgraded components comes an upgraded price tag, lol. Overall, I really like the OBW, it does so many things well. With that said I’m at times tempted to get into the Tesla AWD performance game (just for a different experience) or get back to a Tacoma now that they have a turbo and kept the manual. But it’s hard to imagine either of those experiences even equaling the Outback’s livability. 🤷‍♂️😅

Upgrade the OBW's speakers. Get an amplifier if you think it needs that too. Just replacing the crap stock speakers will make a HUGE difference to the sound. The stock speakers are paper crap with tiny magnets, it's no wonder they sound poor. And upgrading speakers, even adding an amp, is waaaay eaier and cheaper than getting a different car.

I’m in the market for an OBW and from the OFFROAD and other vehicles I’ve owned the CVT does have me scratching my head but at the same time it’s purpose is family camping and your general Greta outdoors trips so with that being said and also the X mode option for different terrain to help get over and around certain obstacles you can’t really go wrong with it. They also have a pretty good off road parts support so where improvements can be made for what you want to do it is financially possible.

I clicked on this as fast as I could! I had been waiting on the CTW ever since the OBW was announced. Unfortunately, timing worked against me so I ended up getting a 2024 OBW because I needed a car and the CTW wasn't yet available. Now that they are, I'm contemplating switching to one. I realize the OBW bests the CTW in both HP and torque but would love to know how the CTW handles a "white-knuckle" situation like passing a semi on a two-lane highway. I'm also interested to know how the CTW climbs steep highway mountain grades and if it'll be able to maintain 75-80 MPH up those grades. I know the OBW can do those things with ease so I'm looking to find out if the CTW can adequately do them. You've already answered some of my questions in the past regarding this subject and I really appreciated it. I'm constantly scouring the Internet (forums, Reddit, YT, etc) trying to get owners' real world experiences. As more and more CTW's make it into people's hands, I hope to get some good information so I can make an informed decision. I really love my OBW but I just miss the size of the Crosstrek. Thanks for the video.

I’m so glad it could be helpful to you! Yes, definitely search the forums before making a big financial decision, and drive one before committing to one. Your talking about 182 HP (naturally aspirated) compared to 260 HP Turbo. So assuming you're loaded with 3 people and gear, while passing a semi on a steep mountain interstate road, then the OBW will do it easy-peasy, while the CTW will really scream and have to work that much harder. And if you're talking taller mountains and impactful altitude, the turbo wins hands down as it won't be affected by the altitude the way the CTW would be. Also, keep in mind how much cargo space you'll need, as the OBW has more of it.

Thanks for the comparison video. I'm looking at the Outback. I do a lot of cycling and the Outback can swallow a whole bicycle without having to remove the wheel. That seals the deal for me. I personally chose the outback onyx edition, which has the larger cargo space, and nearly every feature of the OBW except the turbo, 1" of clearance, and heated rears seats. The towing cap is also 2700 vs 3500 for the OBW. I am old, so care nothing about the added HP, or more serious off roading ability of the OBW. My main attraction was the safety features, such as fwd and rev auto braking, BSM, adaptive cruise, lane keep assist...etc. The AWD is a plus for wet or snowy conditions. can see why some would opt to pay a few thousand more for the added power and clearance. For me however, the turbo is an additional failure point with added heat in the engine compartment. Since nobody ever sits in the back, the rear seat heaters would be a waste. The only feature the OBW has that I wish the Onyx had, is the full size spare. I also care nothing about the sunroof, that it does have.

@@steve8803 I certainly did not mean for it to sound as if I was disparaging the OBW model. I can surely understand how it appeals to more people with the added power and clearance. I agree the turbo and suspension is the whole point of the Wilderness models. For someone who is younger and tends to venture offroad, it would surely be worth the added cost. For my 65 year old lifestyle, it is not.

@@sarge1231 In case you are interested, there are KZbin videos that demonstrate how to modify the spare tire storage area to fit a full size wheel and tire as per the Wilderness trim. It's pretty easy, actually. However, it's not inexpensive to purchase the full size wheel/tire/pressure sensor combo.
@sarge1231
@sarge1231 10 ай бұрын
@@jwix00 Not worth the expense, plus...it would require me to then do 5 wheel rotations. Even though the symmetrical AWD system in a Subaru is great, it does have one drawback. In order to keep it working properly, you must replace all 4 tires together, if you have 1 tire that is destroyed. If the other 3 tires are half worn, having 1 new tire can cause issues, from what I have read. All 4 tires need to be within 2/32 of tire depth of each other, and of the same tread pattern. Finding a used tire that meets the criteria is an option some mention, as well as having a new one shaved down. Running a new tire with the other significantly more worn tires can cause traction control issues, or even drive train wear. I hope that I never encounter the dreaded 1 tire failure issue. Those with the Wilderness model should incorporate the fifth tire into their rotations.

It's crazy how popular Subarus have become in just a few short years. It's also no coincidence how expensive they have become along with that popularity. I currently own a 2021 Outback Onyx with the turbo engine but the Crosstrek for ergonomics and economics works better in my favour. That said, trading in the Outback for the Crosstrek with some amenities similar to the Outback would put their pricing parity much too close.

I am a big fan of the Impreza/Crosstrek. I have an Impreza hatch, which has lower step in height for my wife, who cant step up easily into a crossover. As for the two cars tested, I actually think the Outback Wilderness is a better deal. The Crosstrek Wilderness is way to expensive; it can reach 35k with the moonroof/upgraded stereo, and you still get a mediocre engine. To me for a few thousand more, the Outback is worth it. The upgraded engine is the determining factor. For normal driving, the 2.5L is fine in the Crosstrek. However, the Wilderness models are marketed for camping/exploring off road, loaded up with lots of gear and probably in hilly, elevated terrain. In those circumstances, the turbo of the Outback is a huge plus. Ultimately, though it just comes down to whether you want a larger vehicle with more power and carrying capacity, or a smaller, more nimble vehicle for mainly congested city driving. Actually, IMO, the Wilderness package is kind of lame in either model. They should add some sort of clutch based rear locker if they are going to market them as "Wilderness" models.

Absolutely bonkers that Subaru didn't think the Crosstrek Wilderness needed a front facing camera. With only 20 degrees of approach angle, I've already snapped some of my front plastic bumper clips on small trail impacts when approaching steep ditches and hills off-road. Front trail cam would've cost like $10 from their parts bin and made the Crosstrek truly deserving of its Wilderness badge.

I traded in my 2019 STI originally for a 2022 OBW. I did not regret it. Especially as it was for our growing family. We had been making due with the STI, but as my son got older creative packing no longer led to enough room for all things (bikes, rock climbing gear, skis, paddle board, etc.). The size difference of moving up to the OBW takes some getting used to, but you'll surely miss the turbo in any other model. I also reused my winter STI 19" wheels (Niche Vosso ET30) and upgraded to 255/55r18 Toyo Open country AT3 tires which improve handling, off road ability, and look way better. I now have a 2024 OBW, and the harmon kardon upgrade along with wireless Android auto/car play makes all the difference. Just get the dealer to throw in the skid plates as a term of sale! I did. I also upgraded my springs all around to Ralitek 3/4" lift/overlad springs. They make the car handle soooo much better and allow for loading a ton of extra weight with no sag. I still miss rowing my own gears, but downshifting with the paddles is very useful and lowers the lament a bit. Also, putting the car into deep snow and mud will allow you to do awesome snow donuts and even break loose the rear tires on pavement from time to time (it's not just an off road mode). Good luck with your choice!

I'm going to be getting a Crosstrek Wilderness soon. At some point, I'll likely buy a full size wheel and tire, and lock it down on a roof basket for road trips (yeah, it's gonna mess with my MPG, but oh well, better than trying to get back down a mountain with the donut). My only other gripe is the yellow accents on the roof rails. Pretty gaudy. I'm going to be blacking out the tow hook caps, but blacking out the yellow on the roof rails is gonna be a pain. I'm all about function over form, so the cladding doesn't bother me like it does a lot of people, but the accents do (which are purely for aesthetics and serve no actual purpose other than drawing attention). The roof rail accenting is super low priority for me though.

Thanks for the review. The OBW is too big for me and the CrossTrex is too small, but the Forester is the perfect size for me. If the redesigned Forester is offered with the RAV4 hybrid system, then we’ll wait for the 26 or 27 to get the bugs worked out and then sell my wife’s Outback and buy her the Forester Touring Hybrid, so she can drive it as her commuter car. After I bought my Forester Touring, my wife decided that she likes it more than her Outback. She too likes the size and the seating height. Her Outback currently has only 28K miles and my Forester has just under 13K miles. Both of our Subie’s are 2019 year models. I now drive only about 6K - 7K miles a year, so I’ll have my Forester, probably until I die. I know that we’ll be driving our 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4WD until we die as it has only 36K miles. My sister and mom came up last month for a visit and my sister fell in love with my Forester. She told me that she’ll wait for the new Forester hybrid to come out and then buy one. They’re selling out of Southern California and moving to Kalisbell MT and she’ll need the AWD to get around in. Her finance is 6’-4” and he sits good on my Forester. He drives a F250 diesel 4WD. I personally don’t think I’ll ever get a Wilderness, as we have the pickup for our off road needs. IF I ever decide to sell my Forester, I’ll buy another Touring as I LOVE the Saddle Brown Leather interior. If Subaru would have offered the Limited Forester with Ivory leather interior, I would have bought it instead, but the limited only comes with boring, drab, depressing Black Leather.

Is there a quality turbo kit that can be added to the Crosstrek, to get better power ?
@AutomotiveAnonymous208
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 10 ай бұрын
You could Google that. I would think some people have done it aftermarket. I know one ship engine swapped a turbo ascent engine into a Crosstrek. As much as I would love to see that, I’d imagine the price to do it reliably just isn’t worth it, unless that’s your dream vehicle. Just my 2 cents. 🙂

I'd really love to see some real data as to what percentage of Wilderness trim Subaru owners actually put the 12% more offroad capabilty to use, and how many drive it like any other Subaru, and just got the Wilderness trim because it looks tougher. 🤔
@AutomotiveAnonymous208
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, that would be interesting to know, lol! I fall in the 88% lol. I bought mine in 9/21 as one of the first OBW owners, and had it not been for the Wilderness trim level I would have likely considered an OB. I use mine just as a reliable daily, especially to go through the snow to get to my real job. And having a more capable vehicle is nice, especially when I’m out before the snow plows some mornings.

I'm intrigued by exactly these two cars, but also the future EV outback rumored to come in for the 2025 model year. I'm 6'2" and need to tote skis very often, so I'm tempted to choose the outback. But I live in downtown Minneapolis, so the Crosstrek would make parking a real breeze and is so much cheaper. Very tempted by the outback turbo. I'll probably wait until the outback EV comes out and compare. EV Wilderness outback would be the dream.

Be cautious buying ANY brand's first run of a new model like the EV Outback will be. The 1st run is the one that will go thru the most safety recalls, as the gremlins are worked out. I recommend you test a Crosstrek, make sure it's large enough inside for you. And remember, sun/moonroof steals headroom. For a city car, the CT sounds up your alley, but if you load up with a lot of gear, as well as skis, the larger cargo of the OBW will suit those needs better. Also keep in mind, that the turbo makes long climbs up mountain highways a breeze, because the turbo isn't impaired by higher altitudes the same way a naturally aspirated engine can be.

Hmmm I would like to known how this OBW compares to the 2024 audi quattro ?
@AutomotiveAnonymous208
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 9 ай бұрын
That’s a great question! I’ve not yet drive an Audi All-road or any other current generations, but making an Audi connection would be fun. Due to their poor or questionable German reliability I don’t drive them if they’re out of powertrain warranty. I once drove a friend’s Audi while in college and the engine failed while we were just casually going down the street. I’ve been hesitant to want to drive those, BMWs, Porsche, or VWs ever since then…. 😂

I would not want to be towing anything with a CVT. If you have to tow, get something else. That being said, I have a Crosstrek Onyx on order and it is due in January. It looks plenty durable enough for daily driver use.

When our Subie’s start leaking oil, we’ll fix that problem and sell it ASAP because soon we’ll have to replace ALL of the silicone “gaskets” with real gaskets in the engines. If Subaru would put normal gaskets in their engines from factory, then more people would buy them. No one wants to spend $1,500-$2K to put normal gaskets into their engines when their Subaru’s have 140K miles. But if you’re going to spend that amount of money, then it’ll last another 150K miles. If Subaru would put normal gaskets in their engines, then Toyota owners would flock to them. Likewise if Toyota would put Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD systems in their vehicles, I’d sell our Subie’s and go back to Toyota in a heartbeat.

"So essentially they only make 140 horsepower equivalent if they were at sea level." They make 140 hp at your altitude. Period. No "equivalent" and no need to reference sea level, where they would make more. The Crosstrek makes 140 hp at your altitude. Simple.
