Reading about machines in hospitals outing because of the Windows update was quite brutal. I didn't quite understand the exact way it happened though, I'm pretty sure I even rebooted my PC during that day or two but never got any problems. Though maybe that was thanks to my as little Windows updates as possible policy.

@@happytux77.68 I used to run Arch, but then I switched to LFS and created a custom ebuild-like system to automate my builds. Sadly, my drive failed, and my only backup was stolen. I hadn't set up a GitHub repo either, so I didn't want to go through all that work again. That's when I turned to Gentoo. With a top-of-the-line processor, it's great to take advantage of all the instruction sets it offers. If you're using a distro that's stuck on x86-64-v1 or even x86-64-v2, it kind of defeats the purpose of having the latest hardware. You might as well just go for a maxed-out x86-64-v2 processor and save some cash. Compiling updates and installs overnight can be a hassle, but it's a similar experience if you use Homebrew on a Mac and decide to compile everything yourself.

@@happytux77.68 It's true that Windows comes with telemetry, ads, bloatware, and all that jazz, while Linux distros generally avoid most of that. However, many Linux distros still come with a lot of stuff you might never use, and manually uninstalling it can sometimes break things, especially with Ubuntu and similar distros. Arch offers more control in this regard. While the AUR has packages for x86-64-v3 and the latest and greatest, I’d recommend taking that with a grain of salt before installing them, since they aren't in the official repos.

I spent all day today manually booting machines into safe mode, entering BitLocker keys, and deleting the update file from command prompt. I get to work an 8 hour day tomorrow even though it's a weekend to do more of the same. No biggie, we (a team of 6) just have to resolve approximately 1200 machines before Monday morning...

And before you spew some utter garbage on how this wouldn't have happened on linux, you should remember that psyop by the chinese government that was stopped by an absolute unit that started going on a crusade about something being 0.3 ms slower than usual. It was stopped by a sheer luck, basically.
