A classic hymn inspired by words in Revelation - but these days we sing some words from the original, and some from a rewritten version. Hymnals differ in the verses they publish! Either way, it is a powerful song giving Christ the glory that is His.

Bridges' version:
Crown him with many crowns,
The Lamb upon his throne;
Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns
All music but its own:
Awake, my soul, and sing
Of him who died for thee,
And hail him as thy matchless king
Through all eternity.
Crown him the Virgin's Son!
The God Incarnate born,--
Whose arm those crimson trophies won
Which now his brow adorn!
Fruit of the mystic Rose
As of that Rose the Stem:
The Root, whence mercy ever flows,--
The Babe of Bethlehem!
Crown him the Lord of love!
Behold his hands and side,--
Rich wounds, yet visible above,
In beauty glorified:
No angel in the sky
Can fully bear that sight,
But downward bends his burning eye
At mysteries so bright!
Crown him the Lord of peace!
Whose power a scepter sways,
From pole to pole,--that wars may cease,
Absorbed in prayer and praise:
his reign shall know no end,
And round his pierced feet
Fair flowers of paradise extend
Their fragrance ever sweet.
Crown him the Lord of years!
The Potentate of time,--
Creator of the rolling spheres,
Ineffably sublime!
Glassed in a sea of light,
Where everlasting waves
Reflect his throne,--the Infinite!
Who lives,--and loves--and saves.
Crown him the Lord of heaven!
One with the Father known,--
And the blest Spirit, through him given
From yonder triune throne!
All hail! Redeemer,--Hail!
For Thou hast died for me;
Thy praise shall never, never fail
Throughout eternity!
Thring's version:
Crown him with crowns of gold,
All nations great and small,
Crown him, ye martyred saints of old,
The Lamb once slain for all;
The Lamb once slain for them
Who bring their praises now,
As jewels for the diadem
That girds his sacred brow.
Crown him the Son of God
Before the worlds began,
And ye, who tread where He hath trod,
Crown him the Son of Man;
Who every grief hath known
That wrings the human breast,
And takes and bears them for His own,
That all in him may rest.
Crown him the Lord of light,
Who o'er a darkened world
In robes of glory infinite
His fiery flag unfurled.
And bore it raised on high,
In heaven--in earth--beneath,
To all the sign of victory
O'er Satan, sin, and death.
Crown him the Lord of life
Who triumphed o'er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife
For those he came to save;
His glories now we sing
Who died, and rose on high.
Who died, eternal life to bring
And lives that death may die.
Crown him of lords the Lord,
Who over all doth reign
Who once on earth, the incarnate Word,
For ransomed sinners slain,
Now lives in realms of light,
Where saints with angels sing
Their songs before him day and night,
Their God, Redeemer, king.
Crown him the Lord of heaven,
Enthroned in worlds above;
Crown him the king, to whom is given
The wondrous name of Love,
Crown him with many crowns,
As thrones before him fall.
Crown him, ye kings, with many crowns,
For He is King of all.

I once attended an old Episcopal church with a large 150 year old organ. This hymn was sung at the processional, accompanied by the organ. trumpeters and a magnificent choir singing in harmony. It truly sounded like a triumphal march, befitting our Savior. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and beautiful playing and singing! May God bless the work you do for him.

Ohhh I remember my mom singing this song a lot on the mission field Many many years ago, I am 65 now and as a child growing up we had our hymnal book but it’s only now that the passion, revelation for these Zion songs have the meaning of eternal hope. Christ in us the hope of glory. I am soo overwhelmingly happy to walk down memory lane with these songs. Shalom and thank you. Ohhhh what beautiful words, because He was victorious, we are also victorious.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this hymn!! I can't make ot thru without crying! 😭😭😭 The thought of our Savior's true sacrifice and what it cost Him just ABSOLUTELY gets me to the depths of my soul. I can't wait to see my Savior face to face & worship Him for all eternity with all of creation!! He is so awesome, wonderful, and amazing! The darker our world gets, the closer my walk with Him. I JUST passed the 4 year anniversary of rededicating my life to Him. He is doing amazing things in my life and I'm so forever grateful & thankful. The thought of all He's done for a wretched sinner like me has me all undone. His Sovereignty, steadfast, overwhelming love, abundant mercies, and infatuation amazing grace are absolutely Indescribable!! He is my LORD, my King, my Redeemer, my Friend, my All-in-All, my Defender, my Hightower, my Rock, my Anchor, my everything!! Thank you for sharing the full version of this beautiful and majestic hymn. We really need to (as a global church) get back to some of these classic hymns. There is a place for ALL music, hymns, Psalms, and newer worship music in church. The only thing I don't like about some of the newer worship songs (some, not all) is when they repeat a single phrase repeatedly... in an almost robotic, trance-like fashion. I know many people like it, and that's fine for them, but for me personally, a happy medium of both old hymns, Psalms, and newer worship music should all have a place in weekly worship! God bless you!! 👑✝️❤️🌏👨‍👩‍👧‍👧🐑☝🏼💪🏾⚓️🪨⛰️🏰🛡🗡📖🙏🏻🛐🎶🙌🏼🧂🕯💧🔥🕊🤟

i was born in '47...as a young kindergartener, I remember sitting next to my mom or standing by her side as she played this. Decades n decades later, my college-age granddaughter played this on her piano and as soon as I heard the first notes and words the wonder of this music filled me with tears n memories...I had totally forgotten ... the Lord in His mercy called my family to repentance and given each of us that day to be born again. The Holy Spirit always ministering and preparing the future sheep to call unto God in repentance, for forgiveness and the power to accept His Son to be our Savior who died on the Cross in our place and was raised from the dead to give us our Hope...and so we say "Even so, come Lord Jesus."

I'm an AOG (Assemblies of God) Pentecostal with Catholic and Anglican roots, so I was raised singing this and many other traditional hymns alongside modern worship songs. This is a truly beautiful hymn which I love to come back to as it is so powerful and true. I could be mistaken, but I believe that the version I was taught growing up combines the first half of verse five and the second half of verse six from Bridges original six verses as one verse instead of playing them both separately. I also agree that we need to use a combination of both Bridges and Thring's versions of this hymn because while they are both great in their own right, singing one version without the other makes it feel like there's something missing. God bless you and your ministry as you continue to explore many other timeless hymns and grow in God's calling on your life.

We're never as strong, as we are until we have to be. Never Do as much, unless the need we see. Only give our best, when we fail at mediocrity. We Love rather than hate when we admit we're one humanity. We always give more, when compassion moves our heart with unbridled generosity. We Become more of our potential when we are made to see, that clearly our minds can believe in unfathomable possibilities, while seizing every opportunity, here in lies one's destiny. More than our scars, higher than our stars, for in our flaws are what defines our features, they're uniquely ours, as human creatures. We can run faster than on our slowest day. Reason better, and thinking it through all the way, regardless which direction our emotions may sway. We can find our voice when speechless, our strong words with meekness and our Courage in weakness. Always patience not quickness. Silence for peace than loudness, quietness of fear, not hopeless, for time and effort are equally unbiased. We are more than the stories we're told, we're the one's we write, each page unfold. We are the sum of our Lies and truth, fantasy, fiction, faith, and myths, no matter how uncouth. These are what shape us, our lives lived is the proof. We can be more right than wrong. More just than judge. More godlike than unlike. Reflecting Sunlight in our darkest night. Providing refuge. Never more alive until we die within and begin again. A Human Ark Divine in our human spark. That's who we are, Who and what we can be, we can become. by Steven Gooden

@@desireecordice isn't just what you do but what you don't do. Not just what you did but how you did it. Not just what you said but how you said it. Love is so simple yet the simple make it so hard. Love Is full of knowledge yet even the smart don't get it. Love doesn't cost a fortune yet fortunes are spent trying to gain it. Love does demand of you yet you are not willing to sacrifice for it. Those who only seek what love can give and do for them, do nothing for love and others and in such selfish pursuit, in turn rob themselves of love's best gift. Make this year the year you seek to sow love and not just reap it. Be love and not just think it. Do love and not just say it. Talk love and just don't fake it. Seek love and just don't chase it. Embrace it but don't enslave it, share it but don't dare boast in it. Enjoy it but don't abuse it. Free it and watch it come back. Invest in it and watch it pay back. The history of this song is so interesting. Thanks for searching it out. It’s always been a favourite of mine since childhood when, even at a young age, it stirred my heart to honour the majesty of Jesus. Growing up in The Salvation Army, this song was often used to begin the meeting and, accompanied by the band, it was powerful. You can’t sing this sitting down. It draws you to stand and look towards Heaven at our wonderful Saviour. I like the mix of verses you sang. Bless you for your heartfelt rendition. Bless you, Norma.

We sing most of Bridges version, however we do sing one verse of the other version, also the last four lines in one of the verses but with four lines from Bridges version. Also I think that different denominations sing slightly different lines as well. I hadn't realized this until I just looked for the lyrics on line & found that unless I have the book from church in my hands then I am not going to find what we sing here in Sydney, Australia. It is still a hymn that is sung in churches.

There's a lot more Thring in your performance than I'm used to singing, and I like it! Funnily enough the verse that's always touched me the most, as someone who feels I waste a lot of time and somewhat dreads its passing is "Crown him the Lord of years" which then goes into "All hail Redeemer, hail" as I'm used to it. This verse also makes me feel connected to those in my life who have died and in general to "the communion of saints" through all time. I could say that in Christ, the Potentate of time, all times get invaded by the eternal "now" of the Kingdom of God.

Amen. This hamas-Israeli war is just a foretaste of the coming Gog and Magog War for Israel then the Millenial Reign of Christ on Earth. (Ezekiel 38 and 39; Rev. 20) This song will be in absolute reality that day. When Christ will reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords ruling the whole earth with rod of iron. The King Glory and His rightful Throne in Jerusalem; and every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. After that the Armaggedon War. Then the White Throne of Judgement and the New Heaven and Earth. The New Jerusalem. No more night, no more pain, no more tears, no more death. We will be with the Lord forever and ever. Amen 🙏🖖🔥❣( Rev. 20- 22.)

Hi, thank you Luke, just found your channel and subscribed. I would query your understanding of 'rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified.' I think it means that Christ's wounds are still on him in heaven - they are still (yet) visible above - but now 'in beauty glorified'... anyhow, thank you for your enriching ministry to my soul - with these wonderful hymns. Lord bless, Andrew

I love this song. My favorite version of this song was sung at "the BIG Sing" in London several years ago. I often allow this song to slip into my restless sleep and I soon find rest. I thank - you brother Luke for your peculiar ministry and the quality of your research and presentation and of course for your message. GOD inspires me in these sessions - always!

Just love this hymn and the verses of both writers but like the original best! Would you consider making an album of the hymns you sing in each video? You have a beautiful voice and I would love to be able to hear hymn after hymn as an album. 🎉 thanks. I am sure others would love it too.

Thanks for this, Luke. I didn't know about the Bridges and Thring verses. I've chosen this hymn for our church service on 15th April and was interested to get some background, and ideas for style. I know the hymn very well and I think we sang it often at Christian Union when I was a student in Edinburgh. I like your key change for the last verse, and I'm going to do that too, so that it will segue to 'Glorious'/Look inside the mystery.
