During a discussion with Pastor David Johnson about Tim Alberta's book The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, I asked him how Christian leaders can push back on the constant messages their listeners are hearing that link the MAGA movement to Christianity.
His answer: stick to the biblical text. His example turned into an epic rant that got right to the heart of the issue. Every Christian should hear this message.

To the church of my youth, What the hell did you expect me to do? You told me to love my neighbors, to model the life of Jesus. To be kind and considerate, and to stand up for the bullied. You told me to love people, consider others as more important than myself. You taught me to sing "red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight." We sang it together, pressing the volume pedal and leaning our hearts into the chorus. You said that “He loved all the children of the world”. You told me to love my enemies, to even do good to those who wish for bad things. You told me to never "hate" anyone and to always find ways to encourage people. You told me it's better to give than receive, to be last instead of first. To help the poor, the widow, the stranger at the gate. You told me that Jesus looks at what I do for the least-of-these as the true depth of my faith. You told me to focus on my own sin and not to judge. You told me to be accepting and forgiving. So I paid attention. I took in every lesson. And I did what you told me. But now, you call me a libtard. A queer-lover. You call me "woke." A backslider. You call me a heretic. You make fun of my heart. You mock the people I’m trying to help. You say I’m a child of the devil. You call me soft. A snowflake. A socialist. You shun the very people you told me to help. What the hell did you expect me to do? I thought you were serious, but apparently not. You hate nearly all the people I love. You stand against nearly all the things I stand for. I'm trying to see a way forward, but it's hard when I survey all the hurt, harm, and darkness that comes in the wake of your beliefs and presence. What the hell did you expect me to do? I believed it all the way. I'm still believing it all the way. Which leaves me wondering, what happened to you? (Original post by Chris Kratzer. Go to his profile to see his original writing. The type of Christians that believe in love are still out there. Look to denominations like Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and Lutheran (ELCA Lutheran, NOT Missouri Synod Lutheran). All of those denominations are very progressive overall, though of course that doesn't necessarily mean every church in those denominations is progressive, especially in a more conservative area.
@1BlackCat2441
@1BlackCat2441 8 ай бұрын
@@Trip_Fontaine I agree there are some (non-fundamentalist) churches out there that are more progressive and accepting of all people. But, also as you said, there are progressive denominations out there that are in conservative areas that are not progressive. I grew up in the United Church of Christ (UCC), which was the first mainline denomination to ordain an openly gay person into the ministry, way back in 1972. However, the UCC church I grew up in is in a very small community in Missouri and now 50 years later are still not at all progressive.

@@bootskanchelsis3337 Yup, it’d be that same Bible which is more of an anthology or library than a single book. But yes it does contain some uncomfortable passages. And we can each read those passages as we see fit. Tell me a complicated text or group of texts where we all read it the same way. Or something that isn’t seen through different lenses. I could use the Constitution, but that is similar and yet very different too. Even the Bible though, some Jews read the texts you cited one way. Another group another way. Christians obviously see certain OT texts as pointing to Christ, Jews don’t see those texts that way. And sects disagree with each other on interpretation. No different than the Satanic Temple followers reading things different from each other for their texts or progressives vs centrist liberals vs centrist conservatives vs MAGA reading the Constitution differently from each other. The Bible is not literal interpretation only, but moral, allegorical, and anagogical interpretations. And the OP said “you read the Bible the same way I do,” which means you have bad comprehension skills. Yes it’s that Bible, it’s how you read it, not what it is. How vs what. You came in with an anti religious bias and incorrectly assessed the topic. The anti religious bias is one thing, but your miscalculating the issue is like a middle schooler protesting against their parents and not fully understanding the world. It’s appropriate developmentally for an 6-8th grader. But that’s what it is: a 6-8th grade understanding of the Bible and religion. Cheers

You are not alone! My wife and I walked out of a church this past summer, a church that pushed Trump and Lauren Boebert over the Gospel; walked out and shook the dust off our feet. A church filled with family and relatives. A church that began a crusade of calls, texts, e-mails, calling for us to come back and explain why we left, a church that insulated itself from the community, that believed in tongues and Donald Trump, manifestations and MAGA, hopping to the latest tunes from Bethel and Hillsong and never reached into the community to feed the poor, help the afflicted, to live out James 1:27, "Pure religion and undefiled before God the Father is this, to take care of the widows and orphans and keep yourself unspotted before the world." We walked out; life has been hell, but it's the cost of the cross. We were not, are not, and will never again be part of the MAGA insanity. God forgive us for our self-ignorance, God give us grace to live out our lives, as Christ taught us, knowing Him as the suffering Savior, wounded for our transgression. God give us open doors to those in need, to those who are burnt out by MAGA false Christianity. You are not alone my dear friend; you are NOT alone. In Christ we are never alone. Even if we are alone in our stand, we ARE the majority in Christ. Amen.

That's absolutely correct. The first bricks for this road to perdition were laid down in the early 1980s. To his supreme credit Billy Graham recognized it (perhaps partially due to the fact that Richard Nixon abused their relationship and Graham was made wiser by the experience), and began to call out the marriage between the church and right leaning politics. (Read his quotes from Parade Magazine in February 1981). It is unfortunate that although he recognized the problem, he didn't school his son on it, who is a 100% dyed-in-the-wool MAGA nut. These philosophies are NOT compatible. (Mark 7:6-7, Matthew 22:37-38, Matthew 6:24, Colossians 3:5). Indeed, if you go far enough into MAGA land thinking, you're not even a Christian any more, really. Every man and woman is going to be forced to choose. Is your lord Jesus, or is your lord some politician? There is no culture warfare issue that is worth losing your soul over. I fear far too many have already been lost because they were seduced by a lust for control and retribution. That option was never open to you. Jesus made it clear how he expected evangelism to work: Matthew 10:16. You cannot really evangelize if you have hate in your heart for your fellow man.

We don't have political conflict in our church because our pastor - our leadership - focuses all church activities on Jesus and the missions of Christendom. We operate under two directives. Thank you for this point of view. As a believer, I have struggled so with understanding Christian Nationalism. I want to have real Agape love for my fellow believers, but as an African-American woman, I did not even feel safe around some believers let alone any love for them. How can I love someone who seems to near worship an individual who represents the opposite of what Jesus taught us- that the inner man of the heart is the true measure of a person. I couldn’t understand how they excused the behavior of someone who has not experienced the transformation that comes with a true relationship with Christ, time in the Word of God, and true fellowship with other believers. I pray the scales be removed from their eyes, their calloused hearts be softened and return they to their first love. Lord help me to have a heart of love for them so that I can sincerely pray for them.

I voted for Trump last time but then I started paying attention and, as a Christian, I started realizing people are worshiping him. I can no longer vote for Trump. I also noticed that the messiah the Jewish people were looking for was one who would vanquished them from Roman rule. They didn't recognize the messiah for who he is. Now we (well some) know the messiah but want, instead, a messiah that will "save " our worldly comforts. The Bible says if the end times to fear not for these things must come to pass and to LOOK UP in these times. I noticed that Maga followers are ruled by fear of losing this country and worldly goods. Instead of looking up and understanding that these things must come to pass, they give in to this fear, fight what is to come, and keep their eyes on worldly affairs. We can not serve two God's. Either we will love the one and hate the other. I've also noticed that those who follow Maga rarely truly know Biblical prophecy or most of the Bible as it is. They, instead, want to hear words of comfort from false prophets and false apostles. Words that make them "feel the spirit moving". If they don't feel things then the spirit isn't moving.... it's all run on human emotions and fears. Politicians know how to manipulate those things and control people. As much as I try to tell my friends, family, and church members this, it goes in one ear and out the other at bedtime. At worse, it truly makes them angry at me! I'm only telling them what the word of God says about listening to false prophets...

It was the teachers unions that kept schools shut down in blue states for two years because of Covid. You people are brainwashed. Wake up! You can't expect Holy Living from people who don't want it. DJT is not a messiah. I understand their fear and concern, but they have made him an idol. It's a personal walk with Jesus that drives us to change. They are blinded by fear. They are fearful of the AntiChrist. Most don't even realize that that is the case, some do. I’m a non-believer, but I found this analysis refreshing. My thoughts aren’t meant as criticism, just critique. As an outsider, I wish that people of faith would focus more on showing me how to act rather than telling me how to act. So much current dialogue is about making laws to limit my freedom, instead of inspiring me to use my freedom for good. What I’m surrounded by daily is a barrage of forceful attempts to make me see myself as wrong, so that I’ll be open to revelation. That approach only drives people further away, because it comes off as looking down on a non-believer, rather than listening to them and knowing them. It is not inviting or welcoming. If the biblical god is real, then it seems to me that he sent his son to demonstrate to us how to succeed. The lesson in this story is that choosing Barabbas was the wrong path, and Jesus was literally showing them how to succeed peacefully. That god does not need “USA” to prevail, he just needs us all to simply be good. I don’t think he wants an American caliphate. What I’ve learned over time, though, is that real leadership succeeds by deeds, not speeches. Thank you, gentlemen. I would happily share a beer or iced tea with you any day. I cannot conjure wine, but I’ll share the bottle I have :)

What you have written is exactly what Christ preached. Keep this in mind. Even when Christ walked the earth there were many people who stopped following him, because of his teachings. They thought they were too hard to follow or believe. We are tasked as Christians to show one another love by the way we treat one another. Jesus is Strong and powerful but at the same time meek and humble. For some that is not good enough. They want their leader to be a brute, a mean person who just doesn't take any crap from anyone. What is that saying? You can get more bees with Honey than with Vinegar. Some people just do not believe being kind is a good thing. They think they have strong arm you. God's laws are what convict us of sin and make us realize that we need a Savior. The message of the Gospel is that only God is good. Therefore, in order to be good we have to admit that we're sinners in need of a Savior. Then, we are baptized as a sign to others that we have made the commitment to believe in Jesus, repent from our sins, and live for Him. After we make that decision, the Holy Spirit than fills us and changes our hearts so that we are able to do the goid that God requires of us.

I'm a retired pastor in 2010. In a conservative Red State preaching a conservative message three times a week. I used to say about my fellow pastors. They can't preach an ounce of Grace without preaching a pound of judgment. Folks. There's no middle ground anymore. Donald Trump says you're either for me or you're against me. And for him means all of him not just the parts of him that you like. I think where I would start if I wanted to reach the congregation without confronting them with issues they should be confronted with is to start by preaching the love and grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. Read the red parts. Preach through the sermon on the Mount and just talk about how the qualities that Jesus wants to see in his flock. And are we seeing those in our government today. Let the people draw their own contrast as you bring out the truth and yet subtly compare that to what's happening today. I wish you the best. I would also like to say this in regards to preparation. Many people are assuming this period of turmoil will eventually end and be followed by a truthful government. I question that assumption. The systems in place, from local officials to the Supreme Court, seem to allow Trump to act unchecked. While hope is important, hoping for the best while preparing for the worst isn't sufficient. We need to expect the worst to ensure our preparations are adequate. Think of Hurricane Helene: people had experienced hurricanes before, so they thought they knew what to expect. They were wrong. It was far worse. Similarly, Los Angeles residents evacuated, but many later regretted not taking more irreplaceable belongings. They didn't anticipate the full extent of the disaster. My point is: stop hoping for the best and start planning for the absolute worst. Don't just take my word for it; you feel it too, or you wouldn't be listening. Be safe. Be aware.

What evangelicals clearly omit when claiming that sinners need to be forgiven since we're all sinners, thus giving Trump a free pass for his crimes and sins, is that for divine forgiveness the sinner needs to feel sincere remorse (for each of his sins, not for getting caught for those) and be devoted to repent and make ammends for the rest of his life while never sinning again. I was taught that the Lord truly wants to forgive us all, but that He'd still won't without remorse and repentance. Trump has no morals, so feels no guilt, no regrets (except regarding outcomes), no remorse, no need to repent and make amends and definitely no intention to never commit any sins again. Trump is the exemplary unforgiveable sinner.

@@brushdogartThank you. But this seems too easy almost lazy as a christian teaching. I cannot believe true evangelicals'd really believe that faith alone can be enough to have Christ wash away our sins on Judgenment Day. Not without sincere remorse and a lifetime of atonement. Redemption still has to be earned. As I was taught, faith alone cannot is not and must not be enough. Even just being a good person wouldn't be enough. It has to be (at least) both. Which is preciaely why evangelicals are always on their evangelical mission: saving good persons by having them embrace christianity. Trying to be a good christian person, I experienced as hard work, every day. Because we have to atone for our sins for the rest of our lives. Jesus Christ died to wash away from our shoulders the burden of the sins from our forefathers, making us accountable only for our own sins, but accountable we remain, still continuously risking eternal damnation instead of eternal bliss.

I don't understand the thinking of MAGA Christians. It's not my job to judge others, but I don't understand how they've arrived at their version of our faith. The Christianity I was brought up with taught me to love God, live a life of simplicity and humbleness, and to serve others joyfully and with love. I can't say that I always achieve that goal, but I'll always try.

Few including evangelicals are voting FOR Trump but rather what he stands for and represents. FYI MAGA is a left wing term like Christian Nationalist to demonize people and brainwash you. The problem is NOT evangelicals but fundamentalists and there are far more of those on the left. The Trans/Queer/Environmental etc movements are defacto religions and their followers are brainwashed cultish fundamentalists.

Then there was the Two Corinthians thing. He knows less about Christianity and the Bible than any atheist that I have ever met.

Bingo!!! Everything Christ railed against in his own culture. Thus, you are correct that the MAGA movement has hindered the ability to take the gospel msg of love to others. @@hugotrevino2565 I’ve been saying for years that the maga movement was hindering the ability to spread the true gospel msg of love. I personally left the evangelical church in 2016 when I was told I was out of the will of God if I didn’t vote for Trump. Since then, I’ve found other routes to learn and grow in my spirituality. I’ve run into others who are turned off by Christian nationalism, especially the young. My favorite young barista calls herself a Christian but rarely goes to church because of the politics or doctrinal positions she knows are not correct. She is a very spiritually aware kind woman. There are many like her I’ve met. This maga movement and the dominionists trying to turn America into a Christian theocracy to save the world are sadly deluded. Their embrace of Trump has caused a negative perception of Christianity that is causing many to leave the church or not want to have anything to do with it. Christianity, in my opinion, needs another reformation back to Christs teachings if it is to survive in this country.

Great video. You're a 100% correct regarding Jesus riding in on the colt. It was a humble entrance that was not of a political "strong man." And I would add, this is one of the things that angered and disappointed Judas. Why? He was a Judean and didn't understand many of the things Jesus said and did. Why? Jesus was a Galilean who was Jewish by faith and used different figures of speech and wasn't politically minded in the way Judeans expected the Messiah to be. Granted, everyone was thinking of a political Messiah king as was taught would be the case. But Jesus was a Spiritual Messiah who thought on a universal level that was all-inclusive. None of Jesus followers understood this until after he died. The modern MAGA fundamentalists definitely picked a modern day Barabbas.

Thank you very much for this conversation! The way I interpret Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, especially the public Judgment of Jesus, is that on Palm Sunday they were calling Jesus to act. He didn't act the way they expected. So in front of Pontius Pilate they chose Barabbas to save and Jesus to crucify. Not exactly to kill Jesus but to force him to act! They figured that instead of passively dying being crucified, Jesus would fight back and rise into his power. Not understanding that by submitting and sacrificing himself into the crucifixion was unleashing his true power! Thank you God, thank you Jesus the Christ. Blessed Be ❤

I just made this same reference after the election. When Jesus was imprisoned, he was in prison along with Barabbas, an insurrectionist and murderer. Pontius Pilate didn't feel Jesus was guilty, and he knew he was able to set one prisoner free. So, in order to remove himself from any liability in crucifying Jesus. He chose not to decide who to set free and put the vote to the people to decide. The people chose to set Barabbas free and crucify our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ!! It was the majority that decided!!!!!

For a while I was attending what you might call an evangelical mega church in Florida, but I was really bothered by the fact that they, on the one hand, never in any way acknowledged Pentecost (the anniversary of the founding of the Church), but made a HUGE deal every year out of the Fourth of July, the anniversary of the founding of the USA, with a sermon that rewrote history to suggest that all the founders were evangelical Christians and that the separation of Church and State was somehow an affront to God. I think a disturbingly high percentage of people in this country have their religion and their politics so jumbled up that they've lost all track of where one stops and the other begins, as is now perfectly symbolized by the God Bless America Bible that Trump is selling, with the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, etc., included as if it's part of scripture.
