Great info, I just purchased the 4 TB version without heatsink for my new build, since my motherboard has integrated heatsinks. Hopefully they work as well, they are not as prominent and I worry about decent contact. Likely not as critical as CPU cooling I imagine.

You can always bolster them with some thicker thermal pads if there is a contact gap, these won't only improve the contact they'll actually absorb more of the heat as well and act as passive cooling. What we've garnered from some internal tests is that these new gen drives run hotter in general, so keeping them cool is quite important. That being said most motherboard heatsinks will do a good enough job so no need to worry, but there are options to help your drive run the best it possibly can.

How is the heat sink attached to it?

Hi, there are 4 small star screws on the sides of the heatsink and once they're off the heatsink can be stripped from the drive. It's worth noting that crucial uses paste for extra cooling and it also provides more adhesive to the heatsink ensuring the drive doesn't come loose at all. It's worth noting that this paste is dry and hard and so would need to be scraped off the drive - for this reason I can't really recommend buying the model with heatsink and then removing it. There is a listing for the T700 without heat sink which is also slightly cheaper.
