I feel like Cruella in the future might be one of the more underrated films in the movie industry. Everything you said I did agree. Granted the only flaw I can find with this Cruella retelling is that it doesn't explain why she came to killing dogs. This also means if they make a sequel that actually gives the reason to why she's like this.... then it's gonna be really.... REALLY.... dark. I personally imagine maybe the three Dalmatians she currently owns gets killed by someone and then she wears their fur as a coat to remember them... but then gets caught up in the act of thinking no Dalmatian.. or dog on that matter... can feel loved from owners. I don't know. The credits scene does set it up to the original but it knowing Cruella... why did she do it? Are they just apology gifts? Maybe she was planning on turning the pups into Dalmatians but only sent two out of spite? I mean one of them was her childhood friend, even in the original, Anita... so.... that's the only flaw I can find with this movie..... plus the CGI dog. I think everyone can agree the CGI dogs were questionably awkward.
@charleslee83133 жыл бұрын
I think the Baroness creates a smear campaign, and it makes it seem as though Cruella skins Dalmatians for her clothes, and the news spreads. This makes Cruella super deranged, and by the end, she... considers it. Maybe she'll warm up with leopard skins, after a lengthy trip to Africa.
@cocomunga3 жыл бұрын

@Juleen Rojas Well that is true for the movie... but.. we don't know if she ever actually starts doing it. There is still a lot of time between Cruella and 101 Dalmatians. Between those two is probably where Cruella becomes the villain we know.

Sadly there's no way Disney would allow to make a dark movie, which is weird cuz Disney is filled with evil characters.
@RSK99033 жыл бұрын
Frankly I think this movie was mainly exploring an alternate character interpretation of Cruella and they won’t go the dog skinning route. Like I get that coat made out of puppies is the crux of Cruella’s shtick but I really can’t see them going that route considering how gray they made Cruella. If they do decide to incorporate it, it would probably be a fake out like in this movie where the baroness thought she skinned her Dalmatians or Cruella almost going through it before stopping herself. Just my two cents 🤷🏻♀️
@infjelphabasupporter84163 жыл бұрын
I still can't get over how great this movie turned out to be. *It's more of a reimagining, though. I don't see her skinning puppies, not even in her future.* Sorta like Maleficent, they rewrote most of her character. They definitely set her up as a heroine, not a villain. (By the way, you got her name a little wrong. She's called Estella Miller, biologically Estella Hellman, but she later changes it to De Vil.)

When I first heard about Maleficent, I loved the idea of an origin story for her, I would love to see her go from a regular fairy to the darkest of the dark, pure evil. Thus I was so dissapointed when I watched it, I want to preface this by saying Sleeping Beauty is my favourite Disney movie and arguably it was ahead of its time, so to see Maleficent (the film) tarnish that was so upsetting. They should have just done the origin story and the final scene should have been the "awkward situation" and keep Maleficent (the character) pure evil (also, Maleficent the film is arguably less feminist than the original Sleeping Beauty). To hear that Cruella is purely an origin story and doesn't shift Cruella (the character) into the saviour of the 101 Dalmatians and is actually a good film makes me so happy and I honestly can't wait to watch it

It's interesting how polarizing people's opinions are of this movie. I've seen DRASTICALLY different reviews of this movie! I love the idea of the london punk fashion scene and I really enjoy Emma Stone as an actress, making me want to watch it. On the other hand, Disney making Dalmations kill her mother and the overdone "society bad" trope allows me to understand where the critics are coming from and I can definitely see why people are saying this is a feminist Joker. I suppose this is just one of those movies where you have to watch it yourself, disregard ANY reviews and try to watch without too much bias in either direction.

Love the movie, good essay too--I think one crucial flaw with the “youthful revolt” take is that the 70s punk rebellion was about fighting an oppressive and overbearing authority. The rebellion never sought to become the oppressor, but cruella does. She doesn’t want to topple the system, she wants to LEAD the system, which is one glaring incongruity with the film and its aesthetic choices. It seems like cruella more or less co-ops the 70s pop punk aesthetic while never standing for what her aesthetic represents. Just a thought I wanted to share-good stuff!

The sound of the truck horn when Cruella honks at the jail is the same sound as her car horn in the animated feature. Horace compares dog owners looking like their dogs in the same way that Pongo does in 101 Dalmatians (1961). Emma Stone was not allowed to portray Cruella smoking as she had previously been since Disney had banned characters being shown smoking in its films since 2007. Despite being an English character, Cruella de Vil has never been played by an English actress. Every actress has been American with two exceptions. Victoria Smurfit who played De Vil in Once Upon a Time (2011) is Irish and Michelle Gomez who voiced De Vil on 101 Dalmatian Street (2018) is Scottish. Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Emma Thompson, Julianne Moore, and Demi Moore were all in the running to play the role of Baroness von Hellman. Eventually, Thompson ended up taking the part of the Baroness. Like many subtle references in the movie to its original source material, young Cruella's blots on her permanent record resemble Dalmatian spots. The first film in the 101 Dalmatians series not to receive a G rating from the MPAA. The Baroness von Hellman played by Emma Thompson is a German title not a English title. Her character was inspired by the evil Baroness Galiana von Chatouiller from The Enchanted kingdom of Sir Thomas Tattletale (2017) The dog-loving Cruella DeVil is played by Emma Stone, who in the beginning of her acting career voiced a dog in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: Crushed (2006). This is the third live action adaptation from the 101 Dalmatians franchise, and the first to be a prequel. Emma Stone is only 5 years younger than her character's adopted mother (Emily Beecham) and 30 years younger than her character's birth mother (Emma Thompson). When Cruella reads her birth certificate, it reveals her birthday is August 7th 1952. Estella last name appears on an offer letter from Liberty. It was addressed to Estella Miller. This film marks Emma Stone's second time using a British accent, after The Favourite (2018).

When she finds out she is the daughter of the baron and baroness, then you see her real name is Estella von Hellman. She takes on the name Cruella and adds de Vil later in the movie. I like it....been someone how hates all disney live actions, this is defined along with Juggle Book, the best one....BUT have ton of flaws not as great as you said....1, Cruella actually didnt become the bad guy we wanted (she was FAR CLOSER than Maleficent at least she keep doing horrible things that fit her character) but the ending really pushed a bit into Maleficent territory, with her, not killing the dalmatians and actually sending the puppies to the 2 lead characters of the original? wait what?.....but over all, I will take this as an ALTERNATIVE ELSEWORLD story of a kinda damage but not fully evil Cruella, and the world, the performances and the cinematography here where top tier good work.....the last twist was kinda an overkill but overall....mixed but not bad, was surprisingly fun to watch.....not give me any hope to Disney keeping this formula, so this was lighting in a bottle for me.

If the jungle book explained why humans can’t be in the jungle, why shere khan attacked mowgli’s father, & why bagheera gave mowgli to the wolves, it would’ve been as good as this. It showed mowgli’s backstory, had a perfect voice for kaa’s character (as it should be seductive), (and the little twists) shere khan’s threat at peace making the wolves argue over mowgli & their lives gave mowgli a good reason to leave, and since bagheera brought him in then he’d take him back.

Disney should go forward with their live action villain origin series. They should do Madame Medusa from the Rescuers. But instead of making her sympathetic or a anti-hero. Her origin would be better if she were like the bad seed from the 1956 movie. A child of poverty that did terrible things for money. Only to become more vile as she grew. Culminating to the woman we find willing to endanger a child for wealth.

Her portrayal of Cruella reminds me more of Michelle Pieffer Catwoman. The look of the movie actually reminded me of that movie too. As far as how the origin story is told, it reminds me more of the fairytale show OUAT. I don't think it's fair to describe it as a "female Joker movie". Tho I can't see this Cruella eventually wanting to kill the Dalmatians.

Did you wathc maleficent that completely remade the story
@elizabeth7sj2223 жыл бұрын
I hope the sequel confirms that this Cruella is a reimagining. Cruella is probably the only Disney female villain I don’t want them to make truly evil. The original animated 101 Dalmatian doesn’t have enough fantasy (even though the dogs talk and work together to find the stolen puppies) like Maleficent, Ursula, and other Disney villains. I may be forgetting other villains (I’m not into Disney all that much but I grew up with it). I don’t mind this movie borrowing ideas from the original or setting up Easter eggs in reference to the original. Just please Disney don’t make this Cruella into a glorified puppy killer.

Respectfully I disagree with basically every single point you made. I'm not saying I didn't like the film or that its not a good film but I disagree that its a good Cruella film. I loved the video essay thought and had this been a film about original character I would agree with you that this is one of the best films Disney has put out. Cruella doesn't work as a Cruella film because she's no longer a villain. She has morals and seeks to redeem forgiveness and fights for what is right. None of this lines up with the source material, in fact it under cuts it. And if it doesn't support or at the very least lead into 101 then its the name sake rots the core. An orignal character would have suited this movie better and Cruella still needs a story. Or may perhaps not, not everyone dose.

(I'm adding this in another comment so you can delete it if it goes against your channel policy's, and I completely understand) I actually found you because I'm about to film my own video essay on this movie and I'll lay out all my points more there, I hope to get it up soon. But seriously you did an amazing job.

It’s beautiful it tells the origins and it tells the beginning of 101 Dalmatians if Disney keeps this up it might go up with DC and MARVEL live action at least to me personally

I know im late to this party but- In defense of maleficent, while she does technically turn into the hero of her story, they never change her from the dark, cynical and reserved character she always was. She never really acts like a hero, remaining mistrusting and often hateful of others aside from the one person she does care for, Aurora. What few scenes of good she does express are often in secret, as if unnatural to her. Just food for thought!

I agree with how good Cruella was but I think people are very unfair with the Disney live action remakes. Sure Lion King & Mulan were absolute trash and BATB was miles, miles worse than the original and through the looking glass was hella unnecessary. But Cinderella, Aladdin, Dumbo, The Jungle Book, Maleficent 1&2 and Alice in Wonderland? LOVED them, idc what people say, they’re fantastic.
@FilmSpeak3 жыл бұрын
Fair enough I mean I don’t mind Aladdin, it’s fun. Pete’s Dragon was the gold standard before Cruella, but the rest 🤷🏼♂️. I get people enjoy them, I’ve just always struggled
@msk-qp6fn3 жыл бұрын
I think most of the live remakes are just ways for Disney to retain the copyright to their movied I think and since it's Disney they don't care if they're losing some money or getting some bad reviews for now. Of course stuff like Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Alladin, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White etc are based public domain tales so Disney can't really monopolize on that but not many people are mentally wake enough to give non-Disney fairytale movies and retellings a shot (and stueios are well aware of that) and it seems a good number of them are not educated enough to realize the majority of the classic Disney tales are friggin public domain.

PREACH CRUELLA IS PHENOMENAL
@NitroSpidey3 жыл бұрын
Cruella and Christopher Robin show me that Disney can still make good live action films. Instead of doing remakes, they should make new stories inspired by these franchises. Cruella serves as a great prequel, whilst Robin served as a great almost sequel.
@Night-Mayor3 жыл бұрын
I definitely agreed that Cruella was a brilliant film. I don't agreed they didn't change her to a hero like Maleficent did. I find it hard to reconcile this version of Creuella with the animated one. The way Animated Cruella treated her henchmen and the backstory they were the closest thing to family doesn't track. Nor does her one day attempt to kill 101 dalmatians puppies when she couldn't kill 3 grown dalmatians dogs that were responsible for her surrogate mother's death. I believe this is an alternate reality version of Cruella and ang future attempt to create a bridge to the events of the animated film with a sequel would be a disaster.

I like your take on Cruella but your take on Maleficent is... subjective. Maleficent doesn't become a hero, she becomes an antihero I think. I also love that even while doing heroic things she remains a bit of an asshole

Ehm...don´t praise Joker alone.Joker was heavily inspired by Taxi driver.I don´t think that "copying" is bad, because the formular works.And here, it is well portrayed- Edit:Just looked at the soundtrack.It´s quite good.
