I did tubeless wheel conversion on my BMW R9T 3 years ago. I did not use a tubeless kit, I made up my own. I used 3M Marine sealant 4200 to seal the spoke nipples on the inside with my caulking gun, and black Gorilla tape all around after the Marine sealant cured. No issues at all after all this time. I looked at the commercial tubeless kits in the market and I thought that the little round adhesive stickers for the spoke nipples were a cruel joke. I am very happy with my tubeless conversion, and it cost a lot less.

Great video as always, Ian. I think Honda pulled out the footgun in a big way with the Transalp. They already outsell the AT by quite a hefty margin here in Switzerland for the simple reason that it's cheaper, and big heavy bikes are going out of fashion with increasing restrictions on speed limits and emissions. A factory Transalp with Tubeless tires, cruise control, heated grip and adjustable suspension would sell like absolute hotcakes, but would in all likelihood also kill off about 80% of AT sales. So we're stuck with expensive big heavy bikes if we want nice things for the time being.

Cruise would be so easy for Honda to include that's it's hard to excuse its omission. Tubeless option would also help a lot for people like me who don't really want to be stuck taking wheels and tires off on some dark trail in the middle of nowhere.

I dont mind the idea of tubeless wheels if they are factory. I don't trust the conversion kits. Even still, if I were doing a trip that was mostly off road like a BDR I would still bring tubes with just in case of denting a rim on a rock or something. tubeless cant seal bead on a bent rim but a tube will still hold air and at least let you limp to civilization.

Honda does some odd stuff on the electronic front. I'm still surprised by how many of their (US) bikes don't have ABS post 2020. But they could really step ahead by putting cruise on the NC750, CB500x, Transalp, etc.

Well done Ian you’re becoming an ambassador for motorcycling for sure. The cruise control for me is a winner I’m sure many Transalp owners will be well pleased. Relatively straightforward fit, very reasonable price and looks like factory fit. If so, you can build from a little peace of aluminium any switch holder you like, maybe in exchange to the front mirror clamp to put the Switches on the left Within reach of the left hands thumb.

Lack of cc and tubeless tires were the two sole reasons I didn’t get a transalp. Wish I had this video when I placed an order late last year. When it comes to tubeless Conversions, this is pretty much the thr exact same procedure as with bicycle conversions. Its not a big deal and the pros outweigh the cons. Having said that on a mtb I replace the tape once a year. By time it becomes muscle memory and you start doing it in a couple of minutes. On bicycles its pretty much a requirement to have liquid latex sealant. This will seal the bead on the rim and get in any airhole in the tape and block it off. It will also seal small punctures without needing a plug. I’m surprised on motorcycles this is not part of the procedure.
@James-r9c3m
@James-r9c3m 7 ай бұрын
I have no intention of trying that. One thing you might try is this.......once you get to the point of installing the tape and prior to installing the tubeless valve, assemble the tire with a tube. Leave the tube in there for a day or two at max pressure. That may seat that tape better. Worked with my Fatty bicycle conversion. once that is done remove the tube and install the tubeless valve. Worth a try.

Pressure is pressure, no need to add the tube. Just air up the tire to max pressure (up to 60 psi bead seating pressure), leave it overnight, and that is plenty of force to flatten out any air bubbles.

You missed the whole point of the suggestion. If it is already leaking then the air will not do squat. The tube has chance to fix that leak by pressing the tape and eliminating the leak. @@toddsorel-pg4hr

Thanks Ian @BigRockMoto for this series on the Transalp. I am really enjoying it. I did the Outex conversion on my Africa Twin, so I have a couple of comments/tips. 1. It makes a big difference if you have some resistance on the spinning wheel when you apply the tape, especially on the narrow front rim. I had an assistant hold the wheel while I stretched the tape a little, and that helped it drop down into the well better as well as go on more straight. 2. Taking your time and working out as many of the air bubbles as you can as you go, perhaps with some rounded implement, is really important. 3. Remember, the bubbles can be pushed towards the spokes as well as towards the outside edge of the tape to remove them. 4. I noticed the next time I changed tyres that the pressure had removed almost all the remaining bubbles I had been concerned about, so having a few remaining bubbles is not really much to worry about. 5. After I had converted my AT rims, I noticed LESS air loss than when I had been running tubes. 5. I think your comments about the performance and handling improvements hit the nail on the head. When I converted my AT, I really noticed a big difference, but not too many people talk about that, so that was cool! Hopefully this information will help others who are considering doing this conversion. I will be converting my Transalp as soon as it needs new tyres.

There is a video showing how to use Flex Seal for a tubeless conversion. I have used the tape systems in my mountain bikes, but didn't like the idea of tape for my motorcycles. My concern is long term adhesion at freeway speeds; there is a lot of centrifugal force trying to separate the tape from the rim. I used the Flex Seal successfully and have tested it to 95 mph for 15 minutes at a time. Regardless of system used, it is best to use silicon first on the spoke nipples (see other videos).

There are two aspects of tubeless… one, sealing the spoke holes to prevent air loss, and the second is the lip of the rim. It should be designed to seal the bead as well as prevent the bead rolling of when lowering pressures. 3M marine sealant 5200 is what the Tenere crowd uses as well as myself. Apply it to each spoke nipple, let it dry and apply the tape over it. Make sure to work all the bubbles out and massage the tape around the spoke nipples for proper sealing. Not that bad especially when you do it a couple times getting practiced up. I liked it so well I bought a set of Excel tubeless rims with heavy duty spokes and Hahn machined hubs in my color choice through OFF-THE-ROAD in Germany. Since I didn't have to pay VAT or state sales tax that more than covered the shipping through DHL which was only a few days. Less than a week with every move tracked. So all good. I think the price was about $2000 for the set set up and ready to mount tires. Pricey, yes. But the factory should supply tubeless wheels from day one. The other next level makers do. Why use them? You don't see MOTO GP or F1 patching tubes on roundy rounders. I carry inner boot material with me to fix a cut. Anything can happen not only on the trail but on the highway as well. If you cut a tube tire you'll have to patch it from the inside or the tube will bulge out and burst. So pretty much even repair. What I don't like in converting the tube wheel is there is no safety bead to secure a flat tire to the wheel. In CHP motocop flat tire events that is one of the tests they have to pass. That flat tire has to stay on the wheel for several miles at 50mph. Sitting beside the road with a flat tire has a history of death in a very high risk situation for the CHP rider. I'm a safety inspector and a fed accident investigator. I know better that to be a statistic.

In my culture, we would call it a dodgy system. I would not trust that. What I would have done is to add some silicone to it. I use to have a flat roof house on the farm and I used a liquid silicone to seal the joints. That is what I would have applied. Not sure about the liquid you get for tyres/tires. Heatgun then put max tyre pressure for a while. Heat, cold, pressure, temp changes, speed, bumps, shock on the tyre over time. I do not think I will ever trust it. Doubt will always be in the back of my mind.

Re. Cruise Control: It seems this is more necessary in the US than in Europe. Here in Europe we tend to have a fair few route options, so don't have to take long straight main roads that are more likely to be policed. Also, one can make decent progress on minor roads as it's no so important to stick to the speed limit. The minor roads tend to offer more entertaining riding.

A new system or what ADV / Dual sport riders are starting to lean ( in Australia anyway ) I reckon we’re you live in the States would be similar- as in terrain, that having a tubeless Rear and tubed front . WHY you may ask ? good 👍 question 😂😂, well the front can take some BIG hits and bent your rim for one ☝️, letting your tubeless tyre down , the KTM and Honda A/T seen to do this a fair bit , but have seen it happen on a T7. So a tube makes sense . Also it’s a lot more dangerous when a front goes flat “ quite quickly that’s tubeless “ so safer having a tubed front only for ADV / Dual sport riding . Most riders I know will still carry a front tube even with tubeless rims. And even the new Suzuki 800 DE comes with front tubed and rear tubeless .

That Veridian solution looks good. I wonder if they will expand to more models? Seems it's just a few KTM and Honda currently. I installed MCCruise to my Tiger Sport 660, and while it does have additional features (button press increase/coast/resume) and seems to hold the speed better, it was about twice the cost.

When it comes to mounting tubeless tires, and not having a compressor that delivers enough air pressure to seat the bead, you can often times use the ratchet strap trick instead. I’ve personally had a lot of luck using a ratchet strap around the tire. Additionally, I stopped buying tubeless kits for my mountain bikes, and started using double sided Gorilla tape instead, it comes in various widths, and no more problems.

The odds you'll get a sidewall tear out are virtually zero for 99% of the people out there, even people who ride trails hard. The odds you'll have a standard puncture *that would puncture your tube also* is 100% if you ride any decent amount at all. Tubes are a cost saving measure and a way to force you into the more expensive bike. That's it. I'm packing for a trip right now. Because I have tubes... I have to bring extra tubes, bead breakers/spoons, dismounting tools, etc. Complete nonsense compared to a just needing a reamer, sticky spaghetti, a lighter, and a CO2 cartridge. All of which would weigh maybe 1lb.

I've done a few tubeless sets and have some tips. I make my own kit with the same 3m gel tape. I don't bother using the spoke tabs, I put down two layers of the 3m tape and a few layers of gorilla packaging tape on top so it's stronger if it gets picked by a tire spoon. Then fill the tire to max pressure overnight to push any air bubbles out.
@disekjoumoer
@disekjoumoer 7 ай бұрын
I was going to say something along these lines. I would have maybe just sealed the spokes with some type of gel glue before putting the gel tape on the rim, and then putting some gorilla tape on for added strength.

@@disekjoumoer the tape seals the spokes really well especially without the little taps of tape. The problem I found was it creates a thin spot in the 3m tape that could be popped open by a tire spoon or even the tire itself when mounting. So double everything on the tapes works the best for me.

Seems way easier and probably cheaper to buy an Aprilia Tuareg 660 or KTM 890/Norden 901 instead. There are so many things that can go wrong and be dangerous with these after market installations which does not work as good as factory installed anyway. If you get injured because you installed it wrong you will probably not get any compensation from insurance company.

As ever, great content and superb video! Seems to me that the application of the wheel rim sealing tape can work well but is very process sensitive…..! Feels like a step too far to me if you’re after complete peace of mind at 80mph! That said, having seen you complete the process I think I’d be tempted to form two wooden or acrylic blocks to match the inside profile of the front and rear rims. A clearance hole (or two to match the spoke offset) could then be drilled to enable the block to sit over the spoke nipples. As the tape is slowly applied the block could be pushed against the rim precisely as the tape is applied so as to expel the entrapped air from around the nipples and ensure consistent adhesion between tape and rim! Even better, perhaps a suitably profiled roller on a handle would be better or even a rubber “wall paper joint roller” as we use in the U.K.? Just a thought! Hindsight’s a wonderful thing! 🙄

I think installing the switch on left side is a better solution, on right side it looks very close to kill switch and you need to maybe reposition your hand to set the speed. it can cause partially losening the grip on throttle and setting a different speed rather than the desired one.(if that makes sense )
