That is Swedish power in action. I have had an on-going love affair with Sweden since I was 15 (I'm now 69), I went there in '71, to meet with a penpal, and that is where I discovered Scania, (her father worked for Scania). The Swede's have such a different view of the world, it is so refreshing. Enjoy your time there Bruce, I'm so jealous you're there and I'm not.... From UK.

these are not new boats. they been having them for over 20 years the ferry between sweden and dk have more tech and holds more records then this tug boat it is for catching cannabis, they just forgot the other guys could keep adding motors.. so its more or less a show boat now after it did not catch anyone in over 20 years

That is a VERY nice boat you were on! Oh, the one you commented on at 20:35 or so with the short mast and diesel. The sail on the mast CAN be used for emergency propulsion if the engine dies, however it's there more to add some stability to the boat At least that's what I was taught many moons ago, you can see them on some older lobster boats here in the States.

Almost all of the older boats you walked past are old fishing boats. The vessel named Matilda is a Trditional Swedish Fishing boat from the 1920's to about 1950's and her mast is more for holding netlines but it can usually also have a small help sail. Most of these old ones that share the same design as Matilda are not from Swedens eastcoast but instead the westcoast and they usually came from the area between Gothenburg and Oslo, Norway where the largest part of Swedens Fishingfleet was placed. These old vessels might not be fast but they are extreamly nice and stable vessels in rough sea and could very likely still handle crossing the atlantic to USA or Canada. Most of these are also powered by Old Penta aka Volvo Engines, Scania or if you are really lucky and old Munktell ignition ball motor. and some Sabb motors to, and no that is not SAAB but Sabb haha. hope you enjoy your stay, best Regards.

@ontheroadagain4773 18 күн бұрын
Far from "exactly the same". The diesel engines in these ships, that constantly runs at the exact same rpms run generators that produce AC electricity with a constant frequency of 50 or 60hz. The electric power is distributed to the electric propulsion motors through speed control systems, usually VFDs (Variable Frequence Drive). There is no shafts between the diesel engines and the propellers at all. The advantage is that you can run the propellers forwards an reverse with different speeds without any mechanical components and that the engines can work at the most efficient rpms. The electricity these generators produces is also used for every other electric device on the ship too via transformers. Like a normal electricity distribution system on land.

There are now boats that have electric motors powered by diesel generators, and I personally believe that in the near future, a lot of the big trucks (Semis) will run by electric motors powered by a diesel generator. They would have A LOT of power and get 2, 3, or 4 times the miles per gallon.
