That locomotive sound is because they enabled the exhaust valve. 7:44 Martjin shows it here. Basically switching between normal and straight pibe. The reason for that is because the sound is technically illegal in many big cities in Europe, so to be able to get through the cities without a ticket they made that.

I have been in love with Scania since my childhood. My late Uncle used to own a fleet of Benz, DAF, MAN, VOLVO, and SCANIA that were roaming around Congo D.R., Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Among the Scania, some were used as technical support vehicles, and uncle used to come with one of them by the house every time he was in town; he will get me drive around with me. In the area where I used to live, most of the trucks around were MAGIRUS DEUTZ, TOYOTA 6000, Renault JE 13, and the army dedicated 6x6 MAN. Since, the sound of a SCANIA was so distinctive, I could recognize it from a distance and scream UD (the truck had big U & D letters on the sides of the container that it used to have) every time my uncle had come around. I was like six years old at the time. I love the Scania content Bruce; keep them coming.

@RedAppleApe

They could. But not on the price bc it isn’t worth building up a whole factory only for the US market and the taxes to import are top high on trucks. The other thing is that Scania is owned by Volkswagen and they own also 100% of Navistar. So they would had to fight one of their own daughters in the US against the powerfull big competitors. I mean they definitely could compete especially on short distance hauling and city areas bc of the small footprint. And on long distance they would fit on the frame size of a Peter nearly a house in the cabin with all the befenits of a Scania.

I’ve always been a big fan of cab overs. This truck is bad ass. When you compare this truck to a Peterbilt, International or Freightliner, they are 100yrs apart. But compared to a Volvo truck, here in the states, of the same year, there’s not much difference. Volvos have the air lock on the tilt steering. Heated and cooled seats, keyless entry and remote start, the Volvo dynamic steering is next level safety. The Volvo FMX 8x8 is a very capable off-road class 8 truck. Everything you find in a Volvo car or SUV, the trucks have.

Don't forget, it's $1.000.000 in The Netherlands, its very heavy taxed. To put that in perspective, a VW Golf R have a base price of $45.455 in US. This exactly the same car have a base price of $87.450 in The Netherlands. Same goes for a Tiguan, starts from $28k in US, $47.5 in Holland, and that car isn't even near the trimlevel of its US counterpart. I recon this beautiful Scania would be 500~750k when it would be possible to buy that thing in the US 😉

@@DuBstep115 yeah, but this caliber of trucks aren't bought to be driven around Europe, they are made for Morocco and Tunisia, or trips to the 'stans and Mongolia. Besides, they are bad-road vehicles, not off-road vehicles. I saw a few similar trucks up in northern Scandinavia this summer - it's quite possible to get away from civilization and get a bit of mud on the tyres in Europe as well.

And that is why it will never happen. The us with its import laws favours the american built trucks. Not saying that its a bad thing but. The only way to get it into the us market will be building a whole new factory over there. And thats one hell of a risk i bet the VAG group wont take, which owns basically 90% of Scania.

Ive always liked SCANIA from years ago . We had a pair of 340 HP conventional tri-axle dumps with Bibeau bodys that our drivers would fight over because they were so comfortable and easy to drive . Back in the '80s SCANIA pioneered things like the automatic shifting manual ten speed fully synchonized transmission , the gyro oil filter , and a tandem rear end with a shear pin in it so you didn't have to worry about ripping out the rears . There is an interesting back story about why SCANIA trucks are not sold in the US market . They do have stationary and marine engines for sale here , but basicly they felt they got royaly screwed over by the US EPA during the time of new emissions regulations for deisel engines . The deadline for compliance kept getting pushed out due to the lobby efforts from Cummins, Cat , Navistar , and Detroit Deisel . Scania's V-8 had already passed the test , then the regulations got changed . Back then the EPA test was $ 1 million dollars . Thats when they held up their middle finger to the US market .

Navistar is part of Triton group now , like Scania and MAN . Some International trucks are already equipped with Scania and MAN powertrains . They are assembled in the states, and have different names . For some reason International thinks that they'll sell better if they advertise them as their own design !

Hi Bruce, again great to see how excited you get when you see a new or different Scania, the guy from Holland mentioned about the fuel economy of his RV, I used to work for an IVECO Dealership in the late 90,s early 2000,s, one of my jobs was to instruct truck drivers to get the best out of their tucks regarding fuel, i could regularly get 12 miles to the gallon at 44 tons with the IVECO Eurostar 430 bhp, ( the Eurostar became the Stralis and now the Iveco S,way, this is the same cab used by Nicolai Electric trucks in the US )But regarding fuel don't be suprised about European trucks being good on fuel whilst hauling stuff down the road, keep up the good videos and roll on Finland and the factory tour at Scania

At one time it was US semis that were the one to have (60's). That all changed during the 70/80's and European semis just kept going forward, tech wise, and the US semis stayed in the past. The gap between US semis and European today, is miles apart, tech wise the US trucks are just old hat now, a throwback to times gone long ago. That is the reason the US don't want the more advanced European tech, its simply better than the US stuff, in most things not just trucks.
