Absolutely crazy to think someone ages ago decided to just dig a huge trench to connect 2 oceans together, and amazing that they can do something like this! It's awful to hear about all those who died whilst making this marvel and they shouldn't be forgotten, they are part of this historical great.

Fun fact... Because Kara & Nate we're on a mid-sized cruise ship, they went through the "old" side of the Panama Canal. If you go through on a mega cruise ship -- for example, Norwegian Bliss -- you'll use the other, newer, side of the canal. The locks work in a completely different way on the new side!

We lived in Panama for 3 years while in the Air Force. We left about 27 years ago and it was a whole lot different then. Not as safe as it might be today. Been to Mira Flores Locks since we didn't live to far away from it at Albrook AFS next to Panama City. Had our youngest son in Panama so he has duel citizenship now. Thanks for the memories.

I sailed through the Canal in 2008 while working on a ship. I didn't think I would care too much but it's still one of the most impressive feats of engineering I've ever seen. So cool. Should be on everyone's bucket list.

Hi Kara and Nate - thank you so much for sharing with us. We left Panama City yesterday and we filmed boats passing through at the Miraflores lock - and also got a cool time lapse from a different angle - it was really great to see your filming actually from the boats. It has completed our Panama Canal experience perfectly. Thanks again for sharing - Chris & Marianne 👍😀🚐💕

What an incredible video. The Panama Canal is one of those things you may not fully grasp the high concept and sheer enormity of it by description. But when you get to see it in this way, working, doing its thing : wow, it really hits home just how amazing the canal is to transporting goods throughout the world. Mad respect for this engineering marvel, and all the sacrifices that brought it about. Thank you for letting us see it, Kara & Nate! 👏👏👏👏

Transiting the Canal is a fascinating experience, and I enjoyed the time-lapse point of view. I did it a few times, and can recall the ship I was on breaking the record at the time for the transit fee (the ship was 98,000 tonnes) in 1998. One of the most amazing visuals was being on deck at dawn, outside the first lock - there were ships and boats of all sizes queuing up for their turn to access the Canal. We had to transmit precise measures twice to Canal Authorities using a specific alpha-numeric code - if the measurements were off it would throw a wrench into the process and backup traffic. I can also remember the agent boarding the ship and giving us a brown bag full of magazines like Playboy, which I was told was something of a tradition for mariners.

Hey Nate, did the people on the cruise ship also tell you about MSC's container line? While 13000 ctrs is nothing to sniff at, MSC actually operates a lot of vessels that don't even fit in the Panama cannal and are exclusively used for going from Europe to the Far East, going up to 19000 ctrs! (Just a fun fact, I work at MSC container lines :)) Cheers from Belgium!

@dariusatencio91245 жыл бұрын
As Panamanian I'm deeply honored both of you enjoyed your experience crossing through the Panama Canal, even though your ship used old locks (they already have 105 years of existence), in 2009, Panamanians voted to expand the Canal and 2017 we inaugurated the new locks 😊, the Canal is the most important public industry in the country and give to the national government (annually) up to $1 billion. Besides that, with the expansion of the Canal it has opened up the opportunity big ships called 'neopanamax' can cruise from Pacific ocean to Atlantic ocean (viceversa) in 8 eight hours 🤘, thanks for sharing guys, God bless you and we want you back in Panama, by the way, did you like the sun? It's hot these days.

My entire family transited the canal aboard a hybrid passenger/cargo ship (the Grace Lines' SS Santa Mariana) from the Pacific into the Atlantic back in 1970 when moving back to the States. I spent almost the entire transit up on the observation deck, and can still remember how amazing it all was. It's a bit different now, but thanks for the great memories!
