The iconic 80 series is to this day the best built off road truck produced by Toyota in Japan.
With full live axles, ability to lock the differentials (not in all models) and it's robust built for 25 years of hard service before needing any major engine work, this is the Toyota to have!
The engineers over built the 80 in the mid-nineties when the economy was booming in Japan.
They would have to put an addendum to their 25 year claim (now that we are there) and change it to 50 years!
There were 547,000 models of the 80 series made.
Japan kept 107,000, which mostly were Diesels, and the US got 89,000 of which 14,000 were LX450s and 16,000 were the early 91-92 FJ80 models with the carry over FJ62 3FE engine with 155hp.
In 1993, Toyota upped the power plant with a 24 valve 212hp inline 6 gas engine in the US. These are known as the FZJ80s, produced from 1993 through 1997.
You may hear the term " Triple locked". This refers to the Front and rear locking differentials, with that coveted "Magic dial" located lower right of the Steering wheel on the dash. There were roughly 30% of all US destine Land Cruiser with this option. All Land Cruisers had the Center locking differential, a button on the FJ80, and automatic on the FZJ80 when you switched the transfer case to Low. However you can do the 7 pin conversion, and put a button up front on your dash to activate the center lock with the transfer case in high position. A simple DIY conversion.
Now that the mall crawlers have had their leases terms come to an end long ago on these 80s, and the overland community starts to acquire the 80 series, we are seeing an increase in the market here in the US and also abroad.
With the 25 year import rule, there are Diesel Landcruisers entering the US market. In the US, we never were privileged to receive the Diesels... until now since the 25 years year wait has elapsed!
The HDJ81s are now entering the US and are we in for a treat. The Diesel engines are not only incredible, but get 2x the MPGs compared to their gas powered counterparts.
From the naturally Aspired HZ1 to the 1HD-T, 1HD-FT, and the ultimate 1HD-FTE power plants. The 2 later giving 169hp and 280ft lbs of torque at low RPMs,
It will be interesting to see where the 80 series Land Cruiser market will go.
Most certainly it will be up.
As clean rust free low mileage models are more difficult to come across, the prices will reflect so.
In addition, most buyers these days are over landers, and they outfit their LC80s with armor, sliders, suspension lifts, roof racks and it isn't uncommon to see 20-25k worth of goodies being added to these Iconic Trucks.
That's right... Trucks not SUVs. These are body on frame construction... just like trucks.
The Land Cruiser has earned it's respect over the decades and the 80 series being the ultimate example of the Land Cruiser blood line.

I bought my fj80 for 1500 with a trade for my 92 jeep Cherokee. Since then I have become a landcruiser lover. I didn't know about them until I bought mine. What made me interested in the truck were the third row, the bypass windows in the back and the lower front control arms. Since I've had it, I have done head gasket replacement, knuckle rebuild, new radiator, hoses now cleaned and balanced injectors tires and 2 inch lift and home made tire carrier. Also Yakima roof rack. Its a budget build basically, its what I can afford with my 3fe engine. Looks like storm trooper which I named it before you did yours

You can easily get more than that out of it safely. It's basically a 315 HP downgraded Yanmar 6LPA motor. You don't need to do much to wake it up.

I have a '92 80 series factory turbo diesel. Sweet as. Less than 300,000 on the clock. The solid front axle is great. Love that there is not a lot of fancy electronics on it and you can basically repair it in the field. Fitted with an intercooler and 3" exhaust it can really get up and boogy. Great for the Australian conditions.

I have a 1996 FJ80 white/grey interior I have owed for roughly 20 years. I am the second owner and the vehicle has just over 200K. I have the engine up to date with 100% Toyota parts. All new hoses, belts, ignition parts, etc. Stainless 100% exhaust with stock muffler. I have had an issue or two with the exhaust manifold breaking studs and had it repaired. I have a custom double din stereo. I use Optima batteries in all my vehicles. I have the yellow top with a cold start new Toyota starter. Diff locks front and rear, Slee sliders replaced the running boards. All stock. Clean. I have been tempted to sell if the price was adequate but this is a really nice one. It is a great vehicle.

Picked my 94 up for 3K from the original owner who was an old hunter in Oregon 3 years ago. Rust free but needed much TLCs. My girlfriend joked it smelled like death as he probably had his kills in there. Aside from detailed cleaning inside out, i've done so much from dobinson suspensions, headgasket with rebuilt head, replaced almost every critical parts in the engine bay with all new genuine toyota parts. She breaths like a brand new truck. I did every single thing myself, and that creates a special bond. I love it like my own beast-child LOL.

I love both 80 and 100s. I have 1997 and 2004. I bought a 2001 LC in Champagne Pearl last year with 211,000 miles for my son who is about to start driving. I thought it would be a reliable and safe truck but he doesn't seem interested in something that large or gas hungry. So now, I'm probably going to have to sell it. In your video you talk about overlanding add-ons increasing the price but what about stock/unmolested versions that have all maintenance up to date? (I have done the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, fan bracket & clutch, idler & tensioner, radiator, hoses, tees, front wheel bearing service, rotors and pad on all four corners, sunroof cables, BFG KO2s, new AC system, all new fluids, muffler, PCV, front seat leather and many other things to basically make this beast as good as new.) I was thinking of trying Bring a Trailer since casual buyers typically don't understand the cruiser cult (sorry, I mean fanaticism). Or am I stuck and should add a moderate lift with ARB front bumper and snorkel to "expedition it out"?
@CruisingTheLand
@CruisingTheLand 2 жыл бұрын
You could try BaT or CL and also list on ih8mud. People like to hear maintenance is done, but they somewhat expect that. If you kept it and build it out, perhaps your son will suddenly become interested! Especially when his friends comment how cool it is!

Maybe sell that 01 and get him a more appropriate first Toyota like a 3rd gen 4Runner 🤷‍♂️ The kids love em, They are as reliable as anything (getting pricey though) the Land Cruisers littler sibling performing well with a few more mpg and plenty of room, safety features and capabilities... Yes, good ol' HKS on the Toyota Supra (1988 model). That turbo would knock your head back even at 120mph when you went WOT... The diesel swap sounds great. The ultimate being a 1HD-FTE. There's a cimoany in Austin TX that will do it for you, for a mere 36k!! Lol... better just to buy one done.. swap your gear from the FZJ to the HDJ and call it a day. Would be wayyyy more economical and less head aches. I will do a review soon of the FZJ vs HDJ... just want 1000 or so miles under the belt.

Hi. I live in Poland and have same Toyota addiction as You Man:) Have overland build Sequoia 2006 , HJ61 1989, 4 runner and Lex 570 as yours. I used to have lx450 but sold it and now after 2 years I heve missed so much that I am on market to buy another one. 80 series is my favourite Toyota of all time. We have many diesels but hard to find a low miles with clean rust free one. Can you tell me what is the main difference between a 12valve vs 24valve turbo diesels? I adore you 40 series green one and planning to just have 40-61-80 series with lx570 on my parking lot. I will be the happiest man on earth waking up and looking at them beside my wife and kids of course:)) Keep doing what you are doing because is great knowledge for others and inspiration.

Yes, bit by the Land Cruiser bug! A good addiction to have. The 24 valve runs a little more power. I will post soon a comparison if the 1HZ vs 12 HT Diesel motors, then a 12HT vs 1HD-FT difference. I gotta say, the HJ61 just cruises along... had it out this weekend, and California Highways flow of traffic is about 75-80mph, and the 61 not only keeps pace, but cruises by most. Running 33s.

Hi! I just found your channel yesterday! Great stuff here!!! I grew up in the 1980s in Massachusetts with my father owning a total of six Landcruisers. A 1983 and 1986 LC 60 Series, 1991, 1994 and 1995 80 Series as well as a 2004 100 Series. I am now living in Bucharest, Romania and of course we get the diesels. The LC 300 is not being imported to the European Union although it is sold in Russia and was being imported to Romania before the war for a few months. It's double taxed, first to Russia and then to Romania which is the EU, so the price tag is around 160k euros although at least now the USD is on par or better than the euro which was not the case a few months ago. A guy on my street has a first generation LC 200 (2008-2012). Just walked by it last night. I am hoping to get the new 2.8 204 hp diesel LC 150 Prado myself!

@cruisingtheland I have a chance to buy a 1995 VX-R 1FZ-FE manual with 460k KM where I’m stationed in Bahrain. It’s a cloth interior, doesn’t have the F/R locker, and needs some interior work. I’d probably end up paying around $6500. I’ve driven it; it’s got a bit of loose steering, and the 3rd gear shift has a bit of a weird grind to it. Other than that, I’d probably re-upholster the interior and fix the rubber gaskets on the exterior. Would this be something worth bringing back and trying to sell in the US?
@CruisingTheLand
@CruisingTheLand 2 жыл бұрын
You could also add a OME lift and steering. But at 300k miles, it wont bring an optimum price. With shipping, interior fix and lift/steering, you would be into it for 15k, and thats without any unforeseen repairs. With 300k miles , maybe you'd get 20-22k? Is that worth it? If its a driver for you, yes.. To flip... not so sure.

I have had the OME suspension, as its rhe most popular, and it is a good suspension. Typically, the 2" lift requires no other mods to the suspension. Once you go 3" and more, you will start to have to change to adj upper control arma in the rear, rear pan hard rod lift (reduce the rear wiggle) brake lines etc. The Icon stage 3 is amazing. I have the suspension dialed to 6, I could probably go 4 for a plush ride. I have now experience with Pro Comps on the Diesel, and that LC is dialed in, feels like the OME... and finally the Dobinson and king shocks, which is OK, but I prefer the Icons.

Man, I am right or am I right! Lol. You are 3rd to mention 997, Land Cruisers and Porsches. I sold a 80 to a guy who had a Panamera GTS.. We all like the best in their respective categories.

I have a 80 & 100 and thinking of selling both and picking up a 200. I want 2k more towing capacity. What are your thoughts? I'd really like to keep both & add a 200 to the collection!

200 tows 8k, much better than the 6k and 5k of the 100 and 80.. I may sell my 200 in the coming months.

I love your channel... just came to know off your channel. I live in Malaysia, and so the 80s come with ether 200k milage or around 500ks. So they've received personal touches, and I would like to know how do I identify the better motor? Is there a way to know by just looking under the hood without opening up parts?

@CruisingTheLand Its been sandwiched with petrol motors of many types and I have heard even Supra motors.. some claim to have the newer motors but found to have older type motors.. (early 1990s as compared to 1995s and newer).

Thanks for the info. love your trucks! The gray one in front...can you tell me what lights those are? I just purchased an lx450 97 and love it, but would consider upgrading a few things over time, lights being one of them. Are they an expensive thing to upgrade? Thanks!
