I am so very grateful that you posted this video, your voices were in my head when I when to the gas station today. I was pulling away from the pump and about to make a somewhat sharp turn and just as I was about to turn this video popped into my head and I looked back and sure enough I would have hit the post and possibly even the pump if I would have turned then. You saved me from making this mistake. Thank you so very much! I'm so sorry you experienced this but so glad you shared your experience.

Remote Back Up Camera might have prevented that. You are correct about gas stations, and they should post the heights of what can pass under their canopies right on their canopies. Of course, as a trucker, I had to always keep that in mind as well as ground clearance. I've never had one accident trucking, because I always kept safety first in mind as well especially when it comes to road conditions. Many things to consider. The lowest bridge I've ever been under was 13' 7," but I still stopped to check especially after they laid down new pavement. I hope it doesn't cost too much to repair for you both. Safe Journeys!

Your husband, sitting in that chair, looks exactly like my Pop Pop. He had his favorite outdoor folding chair. He was always on the go and in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. If he wasn't creating memories or taking care of something, you could find him in that chair. I'm sorry, I'm making this about me, but seeing your husband's humble calm nature sitting in his chair is taking me back and bringing tears to my eyes. My Pop Pop passed in 1977. I sure miss him! ♥️ Now, back to you! I hope it just looks worse than it is and your travel plans pick right back up. Your video came up in my Google News feed. I'm glad I clicked on it. I just found this video so I'm late. This video is a must watch for RV'rs and Campers alike. There a million things that never cross our minds until after the fact. You are in no way the only people this has happened to, you are a rare couple who shows life's trials to others so they may learn where most other people hide them from sight. You two are wonderful and it shows that you can weather these challenges together. Life happens no matter how hard we try to avoid mistakes and accidents. The real value seen here is your commitment to each other and supporting each other when one of you is trying to overcome a difficult situation. I have no doubt happiness and great adventures await you both!!

I drive 18 wheelers for a living, and getting a CDL A license and then completing training takes several months before a driver should go on the road as a Solo driver. The reason for this is of course driving a rig that weighs 80,000lbs and is 75 feet long and 13' 6' high requires a lot of training to drive safely. I feel that anyone that is allowed to purchase a tow behind camper trailer should be required to undergo a training course, and then be required to get some sort of endorsement on their license. Inexperience is dangerous and costly. Sorry for my thoughts, but I see way to many inexperienced people driving these tow behind trailers on the road, and many are pretty bad and unsafe at it

I lost my wife (co-pilot) last year to cancer, so pulling the RV single without a good pair of eyes in the passenger seat is taking some getting used to. I really have to plan fuel stops far more carefully. Especially with a gas truck, I have to use the regular pumps. I have hit a few of the Pilot RV pump islands which are great when you can find them. Usually I'll Google Street View them first to make sure there is enough "swing" room to get in and out. First off, YOU ARE NOT A BONEHEAD!! and I am glad that no one was hurt! Secondly, thank you for the honesty and "up-front-edness" that y'all have had. A LOT of people that have RV videos would rather DIE than post a video like this one! This is basically a home (I know that that rig was close to, if not, over $100k). So you basically totaled your house. This would be like someone wanting to save a buck cutting down a HUGE OAK TREE in their front yard but instead of calling a tree service to do it, YOU cut down the tree yourself...and had the tree come down on your house. My heart aches for you! Thirdly, as a "Paul" myself, this took on a personal meaning for me..lol. We are taking over my mother's 5th wheel in a few weeks in California and driving it back home to TN. The ONLY places that I will be stopping for gas will be Pilot/Flying J gas stations! I don't give 2 damns about price. Unlike you, Paul, I am not a "cheapskate" (however thank you for admitting that you are one..lol.) and I will gladly pay the higher price for convenience and knowing that I can pull in/out without a second thought. You are genuinely nice people and I am SO SORRY that this happened. I can say with confidence that if the same thing happened to us (after the wife caved in my skull) that we'd get it fixed, learn as you did and get back out there to see our grandkids! Good luck in the future and thanks again for the honesty!

I HAVE, YOU HAVE, AND EVERYONE who drives makes these mistakes. It is when you think you are a great driver who doesn't make mistakes, when you make the worst ones. What distinguishes good drivers from great drivers is the humility to own your mistakes and never think you are too good to make any more. I watch these videos to remind me to pay attention and remember that I am not too good to make mistakes. Because mistakes with these vehicles can be expensive, or even worse, deadly. My wife and I are close to retirement and considering the full-time, or at least most-time, RV Life. Your teamwork, humility, and dedication to stay safe are inspiring. I am scared of the realities involved in full-time RVing, but you both, and others like you, give me hope that we can do it too. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND HAVE SAFE TRAVELS!👍👍👍

First trip with our fifth wheel we made a u-turn and the back of our rig went into a ditch and got smashed up. The next day we found a great RV repair shop who temporarily fixed us up as we put in our claim and two weeks later that same place fixed our rig just as new. I feel your pain. We all make mistakes. My thoughts are with y’all.

I tow a 42 foot travel trailer. The first I did was add an additional fuel tank to my truck so I would not be trying to find a big wide open space to pull the trailer in to get fuel. I can easily go 7-800 miles before needing fuel. That way we are parked at a site and go get fuel with the truck alone. I love it!

My first job as a truck driver I had safety director that gave me probably the best driving advice I've ever heard: Never get in a hurry to fall. It didn't hit home until I hit something and he asked me what happened. I thought for a second and said "well, I got in a hurry." You are absolutely right. When you are in a hurry to eat, in a hurry to get to bed, or for any other reason, you will make mistakes. Most of the time the best thing you can do is just slow down or stop.

Buying new bikes. Making lots of videos. Finding your way through this together. Just as Liz’s previous accident wasn’t the end of the world (nor was her broken hand)...you will get through this. I recently bought a 41 foot motorhome, it was only our second trip and I was backing into our spot and didn't see the guard pole and it smashed the back of the RV where the engine is and ruptured my coolant hose. Now I will not be letting my tiredness get the best of me and I will watch everything including Bridges, sharp swing turns, gas pump awnings, telephone pole wires which I did clip down that same day later... Now it is a actual job to watch every single thing including tires, brake controller, lights, "yeah I'm ready now That's for sure 😂, guy open up a new RV storage area but I was the first 5 wheel and I did not know that it was new, and they never had a fifth wheel in there yet which is higher than a travel trailer they already had, And I just got a note from storage owner today telling me that he called the telephone company and is having the telephone wires put up higher if they can, otherwise we will have to use a pole to hold them wires up when passing under. 😭😭 And thanks for sharing your video is very important for a lot of people, your video has definitely done good for many.

Once when pulling our travel trailer I came upon an accident. The road was going to be closed for hours and I was new to hauling it. I wasn’t comfortable backing in tight spots yet and there was a huge field to the right. The farmer bailing hay in the field said I was welcome to turn there. I didn’t take into account the height difference when I dropped off the road. When I went in I bent the right, front scissor Jack and when I came out I bent the left. 😢 it sucked but it could have been worse. I just smiled and drove on. I couldn’t fix it there so no need to stop and cry over it. I’ve since gotten better at backing and do pretty good for a woman. 😊

Sorry about that one guys. I'm 66yrs old. I have to do a triple take before pulling out of my driveway. It sucks! If I use a saw or angle grinder, I have to stop myself for a second and think"am I being safe?" It is part of life we must deal with now. Don't allow it to stop you from having a great retirement. You are two lovely people . Just keep rolling with it man!

Y’all handled this like champs!!! I’m SO impressed with the tape job!!! You patched things up and continued to your destination to reevaluate. Y’all are in inspiration!!! Rather than focusing on the problem, you focused on solutions!!! Sending y’all love & light!!! ♥️✨

I feel bad for you both having to go through this. I have appreciated your channel and the uncensored honesty that you share. We have a very similar fifth wheel and just traveled from Washington to San Diego, 3400 miles round trip. Trust me that I have learned so much from your videos and this one as well. You are an amazing couple and I wish you well with the repairs and in your future travels. Looking forward to more of your videos!

Our brand new fifth wheel got smashed into a light pole a couple weeks ago coming home from our maiden voyage. I feel your pain and my husband has over 40 driving experience with trailers, etc. through his work and camping. You handled it better than me. 👏

I am so sorry for your accident. Take heart in that your experience has helped the RV community to prevent the same accident from happening to you. It’s just metal, plastic and wood. It can be replaced. You and your husband are safe and sell. Count your blessings. Glad you have good insurance.

My father did the same sort of thing in the 80's. He had a fight with a tree. The tree one his 30 ft travel trailer needed a new side. First time he took it out.

I was watching you and I only have a simple 26 foot keystone springdale and did a turn wrong way exiting gas pump. Felt a little bumb amd checked I had torn the left back corner apart just a bit on the cement round pillar that protects the pump. I pushed it back together and taped her up. Smaller damage than yours. My two corner screws were pulled out and needed to be replaced. Fixable. 😀 My lesson dont turn that way leaving the pumps ! The back end goes right into the pump area. Hope everything was fixable. Thanks for sharing.

Oh wow. That gorgeous full body paint Solitude. I know it must make you sick to your stomach to hear that crunch. I had a 2014 Grand Design that was a total loss due to a fire. I'm keeping my fingers crossed you'll get that beautiful rig fixed as good as new.

Hey, thanks for posting this - so sorry this happened - I once ALMOST had this happen to me, it was a very very narrow miss, and realized it could have been much worse. I like that placard you have on your sunvisor. Wise words to keep reminding ourselves every day. Hope all works out - and keep the great vids up! (I just stumbled across your channel) :)

Tail swing always scares me when I'm pulling out of gas stations, especially when they're busy and space is tight. And I totally understand being done. I'd just driven 1,200 miles in two days and I was about 20 miles from our destination when I had a back tire delaminate. The tread shredded and as the tread came off it grabbed the steel mud guards and bent it into the wheel so it was jammed. It was raining, the road was small and busy, the tire was on the roadside so I was laying in busy road, in the rain, trying to bend the mud guard out of what was remaining of the tire so I could limp to the destination with no tread. After about an hour I had a TOTAL sense of humor failure and was standing on the side of the road swearing at the coach "F*&^% THIS THING!!!!!!!!!" 😝
