As a person who started off with old school monster hunter (freedom 2nd),and by extension unite, unite would definately be last one id play first if trying to get into old school mh. Its a great game and all, but from tri onwards monsters were made to act more like living creatures. They could get tired, fatigued, needing to feed. Basically they had a stamina bar, not visible of course. Which leads to a lot of dps opportunities. In unite and before, monsters had no concept of stamina, as it did not exist for them. They acted less like actual creatures, more like actual boss fights. The monsters would never tire, they would keep going like the energizer bunny non stop, only changing pace for rage modes and the eventuall limp back to the nest.

I really like the recommendation. I got into Monster Hunter after watching Asmongold play World. Got World on Sale, and with time and patience grew to understand the experience, and I like it. And I am mostly definitely going to play 4U next, then 3U on my Wii U alongside transferring data back and forth with my 3DS version as they intended just for the experience, then I will go to Freedome Unite, then to celebrate my achievement I will go back to 3DS and play Generations, followed by GU on my Switch, then Rise. (I am going to my 2024 the year of Monster Hunter for me, and I really am grateful to have given this series that is still new to me a chance.) So thank you for being a part of my experience. Also, who would have thought that I had all the systems available to play GEN 1 - 5, also with Wilds, once that comes out, 2025 will be the year I finally upgrade to a PS5 so it call connects.

MH4U is also very beginner friendly. It was my first game and it really eases you into the gameplay loop by establishing the importance of preparation before starting a hunt but it doesn't overstay it's welcome like it does in MH3U. Seltas is also one of the best designed tutorial monsters, it's not as aggressive as Great Jaggi can be and it has very easy to reach hitzones and easy to read attacks.
@Aesieda

I would consider MH4U more beginner friendly than World which throws so many things at the player all at once. World can get very confusing because of its extra systems on top of the story mode/narrative that is being shoved in your face at the same time. 4U is simpler.

Getting 3u and then 4u will show the great difference between the two generations. 4U was the birth of advance movement options. Mounting was a new universal tool for hunters to use to increase safe damage output and creating an opening for other hunter to heal or buff themselves. 3u however, was much slower compared to 4u but had surprising depth to it. The more methodical pace of the game had each individual choice mid hunt more important, getting rushed by a Brachy? When do you sheath your weapon to heal? How will you maneuver around him, what about his puddles of slime? You not being able to jump around with low cliffs or your insect glaive, what are your immediate options? Having to see the patterns of your opponents and being able to make accurate predictions will greatly reward you on either an aggressive push or to pull back and gather yourself.

Old games were punishing, yes, but what I really appreciated about them was their INTENTIONALITY. Everything was slower and there was serious commitment to your attacks. Also no ridiculous crowd control like mounts and silkbinds. To win you really needed go in with a plan and outplay the monster. Plus there's something good about the simplicity as well. Now even the most beginner friendly weapons ALL have meter management on top of their other mechanics.

@@Exel3nce I have to disagree with world having a nice balance tbh, back then you had to actually make sure you were well-supplied with enough pots, mats for pots, traps, bombs, additional mats for traps/ bombs etc, and on top of that you had to make sure you brought the correct gear too. World made that obsolete with the supply camp letting you refill supplies and change gear on a whim. Didn't eat? Well, you can still have the handler prepare a meal for you at camp. Placed a trap and the monster ran off? Don't worry, you basically have infinite mats to make more at camp. World did really improve the fluidity of attacks and added seamless areas tho, but mostly it feels like a hack and slash rather than a monster hunting action rpg. The broken hitboxes and frame 1 charge spam from old gen can fuck off tho.

Generations was my first MH game and I love it and GU to death but I agree that GU wouldn’t be a good intro into the series. It’s very overwhelming and has the slowest start in the village but it’s completely manageable if you have a friend guide you through it. I got all of my friends who started in World to jump into GU just fine with me acting as their guide. But for the hunters that fly solo, 4U is ideal choice imo.

I started with 4U and it has a great learning curve. The progression of larger and larger monsters is very natural and fair to the player. It also is the game that started the trend of the developers making the games “easier” to be more appealing to new players. This creates a good balance between not being super unforgiving and frustrating like the earlier games, while not being stupidly easy like base Rise was.

for freedom unite, its clankiness in a way make the game way more realistic than its successor, the gameplay is slow and grounded, and you don't have any of the flashy anime stuff ( looking at you Ls and Ds) that are in the 4 and 5 gen. FU in term of ambiance really make me feel like a hunter, you live in a snowy mountain village and you go on hunt with your heavy ass weapon that make your movement really inhibited. as opposed to rise where i feel like a superhero on steroid flying accross the map like its nothing. ambiance and aethetism can play a huge factor in one appreciation of a game, more than gameplay for some.

I started playing these games back around 2009/2010 when I got a psp for Christmas. My sister and I had seen the commercials for Tri and thought it was cool so when we found Freedom 2 on the psp in a Best Buy or something I gave it a whirl. Its been 12 years and Monster Hunter is my favorite series now. It makes me happy to see that I'm not the only one who suggests 4 Ultimate as a good jumping off point because even to this day I think its the best one to start with. Even when it came out, it just felt balance in a way that Freedom 2/Unite and 3 Ultimate didn't. The way I look at it is; the skills you develop in 4U are the most transferrable in the series, what you learn helps with later games and even earlier games though to a lesser degree. But that's just me. Good video overall, as usual ^^

22:59 I've played enough MHDos to say that it is my favorite (even though I have played more other MH games), but that game is different from the others, the developers prioritized the coherence and realism of the world and the mechanics, for example if you want to get honey in the jungle, in the winter you'll find almost none, but for example in MH Freedom Unite if you have the honey upgrade for the farm you will find a lot after every quest. This is why I also don't recommend it for beginners, but we should be thankful to Dos for implementing the Longsword, Dual Blades, Hunting Horn, Gunlance, Bow and the charged attack for Greatsword. It created the Pelagus group for big monsters (Bullfango already existed in MH1), it has the Elders Dragons that are actually dragons (Gen 1 had Kirin and Lao Shan, being only Fatalis to have the shape of a dragon). It was the first game to let you upgrade your armor, in Gen 1 you can only upgrade your weapon. Also this game have different seasons and full day cycle that affected the world in general. But for beginners I totally recommend Freedom Unite, being to this day the Monster Hunter I played the most, but also the video game I spent the most hours on. I don't have a reason to write about newer games, since the video is already great at doing so. I hope this information is helpful for someone. (The comment is late, but I've just watched the video)

They gave Elder Dragons these special feel to them by making you fight them throughout multiple quests. Sure, some of the hitboxes can be janky as hell, but imo they are part of the experience.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Tri Ultimate on the 3DS only is a war crime and should be ported and updated like Generations Ultimate was with a crap load more content, all the older monsters, their newer forms like the apex or different colored forms and probably should add in some and I do mean some of the modern monsters like for example some from World/Iceborne or Rise/Sunbreak. Like Generations Ultimate did with the multiple old school hun areas, they need to add in a free roam area like Moga Woods in Tri Ultimate. You know like a practise this new weapon or play style or just fooling around and understanding the mechanics of said monster. Like quickly grabbing a capture monster or herbs or quickly gathering things like ore or foods or whatever people want to do or even a break from questing and current story progression. Again it would amazing like Generations Ultimate where there's a farm to help out the town and helping grow food or raise smaller monster animals in said farm like an ecology animal farm or barn. Then head over to like Pokke village or older towns or the offline cities would be a great idea to have quests and missions in huge offline hubs for nostalgia sake or even new experiences of memory community building like in Tri Ultimate for the ship canteen area where you can arm wrestle and hang out

MHFU still my fave game in the series, I totally agree with the comment about how it's almost nicer having less mechanics of your weapon so that you don't need to focus so much on that, it means you can focus more on the monsters moves and the environment, positioning etc... I hope they remaster it

MH4U got me into the series and I agree with it being the best place to start when getting into the older games of the series. It taught me to watch and learn how monsters reached or fought. It also taught me the importance of the Superman Dive, or I guess now know as the Leap of Faith. You didn't have counters to go back on if everything else failed (unless you played Lance). If you put yourself in a bad spot, you paid for it, forcing you to learn how monsters attacked and reacted to situations. You'll also fall in love with the NPCs that join you along your journey with the Caravan. The Man, Lil Miss Forge and my favorite Guildmarm.

I tried getting into MH with Tri. I had no understanding of the fundamentals of the game, thinking it was a traditional jrpg. I got rocked by the first monster and just got frustrated and quit. Eventually when 4U was announced, I was following projared and to my great fortune, he explained entirely the mindset you needed to have to get into this series. So I picked up 4U and fell in love.

I'd also recommend 4U as a first old gen title. Aside from the qualities you mentioned, i saw someone talk about how Seltas has a great design for a beginner monster, which i agree with. But there's also the use of the story to ease the players into the series mechanics. As you gather members for the caravan, you also learn little by little the different things that you need to know : gathering and multiplying items, the forge, the cantine etc. The game does a very good job at untroducing these mechanics alongside their associated characters. There's even a tutorial 1 star quest for each weapon to teach you the basics, which gen 5 didn't bother to do lol

I started off with Freedom Unite a really long time ago, and had not owned any MH games since. The jump from Gen 2 straight into Gen 5 in Rise was quite a whiplash in terms of new content and mechanics, but a welcome improvement to quality of life.

Honestly if you have access to Tri and extra wii remotes, get your friends to do arena co-op with you. Having someone teach you to play in the same room is SOOO useful! It's how I got my kids into the series 🤣 I suggest it as while the newer ones are easier Tri also has LESS options to confuse new players and will help beginners get to grips with the menus ect without getting too overwhemed.

My first actual owned MH was World & then Stories 2 & Rise. I will say back when I tried MH3U & MH4U on the 3DS as demos, I enjoyed them & it's what made me keep on following the series from then until I finally got some of the future games. I played those demos so much until their limits went out, I just loved them. Maybe one day I might get MH3U & MH4U for my 3DS so I can see what I missed.

This video convinced me to also get 4U, after already picking up Generations in a recent Switch sale. First impressions - 4U has a substantial barrier to entry for a newcomer to old school Monster Hunter The camera is a STRUGGLE. Getting bodied by a velocidrome I can't keep track of on a 240p screen I have to recentre every few seconds is not the one. And using the New 3DS's nub is awkward and slow . . . I love the 3DS, but the game feels compromised on here. If I hadn't already thoroughly enjoyed my first 30 hours in Generations, I might've bounced off 4U and gone back to Rise I could see myself learning to control 4U and preferring it for the reasons you give. But Generations is celebration of all things Monster Hunter - the love that went into it is infectious - and it's right there on a modern console. I'm having a great time tooting my hunting horn and wondering how many millions of hours it will take to finish!

Also good to note for any completionists (like myself), by playing MHFU, MH3U, MH4U, MHGU, MHW:I, and MHR:S, you have access to every single monster in the mainline series. Hunting at least 1 of each monster in the series is a good goal for those that are completionists.

Leading with my conclusion: World did a fantastic job at drilling core, foundational concepts into my mind and I highly recommend for anyone who loved World and Rise to take this video's advice and give older games a try. The CPP is harder to get these days, but I would earnestly recommend getting a 3DS and a CPP on the cheap if you can and nabbing 4U and 3U. It's a good selection to try out. After World finally got me past the Monster Hunter Learning Cliff and I sank actual hundreds of hours into it and mined the content dry, I approached a friend of mine with the exact question that this video asks, and his answer was 'do you have a 3DS? Go get 4U and Gen, play 4U first.' So I did, and I even put a direct order to Nintendo in for a Circle Pad Pro. Best investment I made, 4U was incredible and the fact that I nestled into it so comfortably, with just a few adjustments for older mechanics, really cemented for me that Monster Hunter was always a series meant for me, but I just couldn't get past that Learning Cliff to break into the series. But once I got past it, older games became these old hidden gems, full of content ready to be played and enjoyed. After 4U the timing of things wound up so that Iceborne came out and then GU came out by the time I was done with that, and I can confidently say that going from 4U to GU works just fine, although it does mean my 3DS MHGen cartridge has sat unopened and unloved. Next up on my menu (mostly because of videos on this channel extoling its virtues) is 3U on the 3DS.

Without having started the video, I'm going to have to say MH4U as it was the first game where I really got into the series. Generations/Ultimate is definitely a close second because it's going to be a better experience on the switch, although you can emulate MH4U and it feels just fine (much better than playing on the 3ds). I would love a remaster of 4U just for some better controls and resolution. I did play tri (on my buddies wii, yay split screen?) and then 3U with some friends back in the day and got relatively far into the game but I wouldn't really say I 'got it', but I certainly appreciate it more now and I even bought a Wii U for the sole purpose of playing it online while the servers are still up. I got my friend into MHW (her first MH game) but we're done with Rise until Sunbreak and I want more MH, so I convinced her to get Gen U on the switch and we're going to play through that now. She looked at 3U and 4U and was a hard pass, so I'll take Gen U since I never played the 'Ultimate' release on switch.

Well, this explained a lot about why I loved 3U's aesthetic so much, and was always middling on 4U's. I don't really like summer, but loved 3U's cool beach aesthetic, while not really vibing with 4U's hit you with as much summer as possible. This was before being locked into Dundorma, Shagaru competing with the glorified 5 minute siege tutorial with Rusted Kushala being there, whatever the hell the Everwood was, and then Wystones and OG Apex, which caused me to scream EXTERNALLY when it showed up in one of Rise's trailers. Have to agree, 4U is probably the most accessible one to get into old school. You don't have GU's complete and utter bloat, 3U has swimming, and Freedom Unite is just old. Next option would be Portable 3rd, because it still has cats, doesn't have G rank to pad game time, still has the farm, and doesn't have mounting. It's straight you, the monster, and your ability to work around the monster. It's less janky than FU while not having a bunch of different mechanics the later entries have. It's Monster Hunter at its most fundamental. But you'd need fan translation or emulation to play it.

@@ranges787 I mean portable 3rd is literally a High Rank only game. Doesn't really surprise anyone that it will end very fast. Also Freedom Unite is just ok, you have to REALLY like the game to play it for that long. Did we make every piece of gear and perfect sets? Hell no, we didn't even need it.

I feel like you didn't mention one key difference between MHGU and MH4U. The camera, at least if you get the Switch version of MHGU. The camera in MH4U, even if you have a Circle Pad Pro, will only turn vertically and horizontally, and it won't do both at the same time, meaning it can be incredibly awkward to play if you've never played a game with such a clunky camera. I think that, even despite the hump, MH4U is still the best entry point, but I think its worth a mention, since that was the biggest turn-off early on when I was playing MH4U.
