Don't really care about that problem, never been much of a problem for me, but would absolutely love being able to hold a button to continue gathering, being able to move in any direction (rather than clunky 8-directional movement), not needing to bring picks and bug nets with me, and all multiplayer quests being tuned to the number of players participating. I was able to complete most of the multiplayer quests solo, but holy crap, at least if you run SnS (my preferred weapon), some of the later ones are nearly impossible just because you can't get your DPS high enough to kill within the time limit, no matter how aggressive you are. Otherwise, other than wishing it was on other systems, there's not much I'd change about 4U. My all time favorite.

One of the other great lessons Great Maccao teaches is about "danger zones" or, zones around the monster you want to avoid being in because they can attack you faster than you can react and avoid. With Maccao, it's those little tiny kicks. They won't kill you, just be annoying enough for you to realize "shoot, I should stop being right in front of this guy". Another lesson is something that leads right into Valstrax, and that is stance changing. Maccao on its tail and on its feet has access to different attacks, and you can adjust your play style based on that. Similarly, Valstrax does different attacks based on whether its engines are faced forwards or backwards, and you can similarly approach him differently based on which stance he is in.

4U is the best one imo, very cold take I know, but it’s just the most well rounded game overall. Didn’t experiment or introduce any crazy new concepts, just doubled down on what worked and greatly succeeded at it. I generally prefer GU for its combat, monster roster and map selection but it probably has the worst grind loops in the series. G-rank hypers don’t feel playtested. I feel like MHWI could have easily been the best if it had just streamlined less mechanics, avoided the live-service approach to prevent monster and weapon power creep and patch out the clutch claw/claggers entirely.
@ushionation5127

Strongly agree, I think 4U is the best balanced of any MH from roster, to story, to equipment, etc. The hardest content felt insanely hard (GQ 140 Shagaru Magala demolished me and my hunting buddies) but also completely doable with enough preparation and practice
@The_Mewster69
@The_Mewster69 Ай бұрын
What do you mean it didn’t experiment or try any new concepts? 4U had a lot of new mechanics that weren’t seen in the series up until its release. Things like mounting, frenzy and apex monsters, GQ leveling system and even weapon augmentation was introduced in 4U so to say that it just stuck with what worked it doing it a disservice tbh.
@lonradb
@lonradb Ай бұрын
@@The_Mewster69 Perhaps I should have clarified that it didn’t wholly revolutionise the real-time gameplay like previous games did. Mounting was like the biggest thing to come out of the game in that regard and I wouldn’t necessarily say that it shook up the formula as much as underwater, the slinger, or wirebugs did for their respective titles.
@The_Mewster69
@The_Mewster69 Ай бұрын
@@lonradb Sure it didn’t revolutionize the series much in terms of combat or anything but it still introduced some major mechanics that pretty much have become staples since. The Frenzy/Apex mechanic is pretty much the reason we’ve had hypers, tempered, afflicted and whatever powered up state Wilds may introduce. This alone pretty much makes it one of the games in the franchise with a huge impact to how the rest of the series would develop and I think it’s important to keep in mind the effect of mechanisms like these and how they affect the game and not just weapon move set changes.

@@lonradb the way 4U played with elevation was pretty huge, it may not seem like a big deal for people now because of how standardized it's become, but the old Tigrex chase trailer (not the CG intro, but the old MH4 original trailer) depicted a level of player movement that seemed absurd for people only used to 3rd gen games.

OMFG thank you!!! Ive been saying this for years about how the maps where better when they had loading screens. Moderns maps feel small compared to older titles, like how the forest in world all takes place at the base of a giant tree. In older titles maybe 2 or 3 zones would take place right next to each other with the rest of the zones showing of more distant locations of the biome.

At 4:55 when you said that's not why you play Monster Hunter when it comes to the unique imaginative zones, I personally would say that THAT is half the reason why I play Monster Hunter, because part of hunting is to step into the world of that monster, where it lives, so the way the maps are designed add to the personality of the monster and the surrounding habitats it inhabits. I've always loved the various set pieces that the maps of the old games provided. World and Rise have some good areas, but overall they don't come close to the classics.

@@Ghostgate611 Sunbreak > GU Wrong. GU is easy. Monsters are just slapped into the game without caring about clipping etc... its way too easy to just maneuver out of the way and straight up ignore attacks with Styles allowing special dodges or counters. Sunbreak is full of monsters who take a shit all over the deviants which I really love btw, they are some of my fav monsters. Hazard quests are 10,000x harder than deviants LOL and Special Investigations (anomaly) are a lot more engaging than the deviant grind. Rise even though its a base game, was more fun to grind than deviants as well, rampage weapons changed the MH base game because you could craft weapons. Deviant equipment sits in your box and never gets used. Rampage weapons get used a lot. I love the deviants, but the grind is booty. REengine, has allowed the devs to get a lot better at creating tighter hitboxes and monster skeletons, which means you the hunter, have to be a lot more precise with your timings. Even with counters etc... youre more limited than what styles allowed. Monsters AI is improved as well, GU doesnt even come close to Sunbreak, in terms of monsters reacting to you the hunter. Risebreak, was built from the ground up to improve the fluidity of combat, GU was just slapping monsters into a game to celebrate. Theres a massive difference between the two.

I love the MH series, but World just feels like it's on a whole other level, and my favorite part of it has got to be the environment. The older games had some cool enviromental interactions, but it wasn't anything crazy, but in World, you just stop and look around for a sec, and boom! You see that wall covered in fungi? Why don't you run up that and do an air attack! Or oh, that pile of stones on the ground? Pick em up and use the clutch claw to fire the monster into a wall! Those poisonous plants? Use them to poison the monster! Maybe try and lead two monsters together for a turf war! The list goes on! It is worth noting the only MH games I have actually played and beaten are 4U, GU and World, though I played 4U and GU when I was way younger so I might not remember just how good they could be.

Not to mention that the sheer number of 93 large monsters is the most we have ever seen in a monster hunter game. Sunbreak has 78 and iceborn has 71, which as a byproduct also caused a bigger variety of weaopons and designs. It absolutely doesn't require loading screens to get that perception of scale. Just a simple zoom-out fade-out as the character starts walking a path... then cinematically coming back in. Maybe a couple times with an intermediate zone looking down. Just like how thick vines / fast travel works in World, there's a cinematic entrance to the zone via wingdrake before you regain control. Also allows much more interesting terrain and set pieces when not everything needs to be walkable.

Dunno man sounds a lot like nostalgia. Although not to the same extend as vortex pinnacle both the ancient forest and the coral highlands have a similar journey of being able to journey from the very underbrush and lowest point in the map to the very top of the ancient forest main tree where Rathalos nest is as well as the Coral Highlands where you also ascend above the clouds to meet elder dragons such as Kirin. Although it’s not as extreme the journey is still there and I think with Wilds this’ll be even further exemplified with larger maps that can convey the type of distance travelled with the older games. U say the journey is inconvenient and may take a while but doesn’t that add to the experience of being a hunter tracking down a monster? I think it’d be way cooler if the vortex pinnacle didn’t have a loading screen and getting to the top was a challenge in itself

I hope this explains it well enough but if not, I'll pin this comment so other people can chime in! So you can actually play with friends from the very start! It's a bit more streamlined in world and rise but you can play through the whole game solo or multiplayer if you want. As for what kind of game it is, you could think of it sort of like a boss rush? Basically you start off in the village, chose one of 14 weapons, then go out to hunt a monster in these maps that are separated into a few zones. Fighting the monsters gives you materials to upgrade your weapons and armor. The game is all about learning the monster's attack patterns and the capabilities of your weapon while gradually getting stronger and fighting bigger and stronger monsters.

Rise could have been unbeatable if it had incorporated the Styles from Ultimate. The new hunter arts system and the wire bugs are all nice, no doubt there, but Styles were a whole different level of amazing diversity. For example, Adept style allowed me, as a sword & board user who had to play super aggressively to compensate for my lower damage but ended up taking a lot of dumb damage as a consequence, to get my licks in while still being able to escape dangerous situations that would have otherwise sent me carting early, so long as I knew when & where to dodge. I can still kinda do that in Rise, but not to the same level. I still wouldn't trade Rise's conveniences & advancements for Styles, but I really do miss being able to dodge on-command & actually have it work out well for me, instead of just making it look like I dove face-first into damage on purpose sometimes.😂

Dodges in MH have always been tailored around positioning as opposed to s. While I would love to see some styles return in future titles (aerial and alchemy especially as they both had tons of potential without being overly broken), adept and valor imo kindof trivialized everything up to MHGU's endgame and removed the need to actually pay attention to where you stood relative to the monster. 9/10 adept mains I talk to have no idea that you can hug Glavenus's leg to avoid its spin attack, for example. Sure, I had a blast with both styles in the endgame (some fights were actually difficult even with endless on-command s), I much prefer the patient, back and forth playstyle of deciding whether I can afford to be aggressive of if I should back off and wait for a better opportunity; gameplay where your actions have consequences.

I played Tri before Ultimate, and Rise kinda went back to that if you don't abuse wirebugs, so I've done my fair share of learning how to keep my ass out of hot water by learning patterns. I'm just saying that between being able to dodge through a rajang beam that, coincidentally, soneone wasn't in the right spot to dodge, and being the reason the quest failed & everyone left the group, I'll take Adept cheesing any time.😂

Striker Switch Axe gotta be my fav way to play any monster hunter game, mostly because of one specific monster. Thunderlord (especially the EX version) Slotting in EE lets you side step almost all of his moves and also mostly gets rid of your weak defenses and it often gives you massive punish windows. Personally I feel like it is the pinnacle of old school monster hunting.

The biggest issue with world ai vs old ai that gets really annoying when you notice it is 5th gen monsters run away from you just to do ranged attacks which totally makes the pace annoying because you have to go run up to them instead of them just using it point blank still or only whipping it out at the correct range already. Its not like this is for realism either since any projectile would do more damage point blank or close to it then with time for energy to fall off anyway

What makes GU my favorite monster hunter is hunting styles. I've been screaming and begging for those to come back. It made it feel like you had 84 different weapons. The variety and customization were crazy. Even if you didnt like something about a weapon, there was probably a style that fixed it and made it fun. I never liked ranged weapons, but in GU, I ended up playing valor HBG. I loved the power run, which made the weapon feel way more mobile which was my biggest problem with HBG, as well as the crouching fire. I wish they'd bring back in a new monster hunter. I need them to bring GU to pc or at least playstation and xbox so more people can get a chance to play it. I dont want this game to end up being lost to time.

All your video did for me was make me wish I was able to play the older monster entitles unfortunately, since I am legally blind, I can’t play any of the games where the map is into loading sections. Imagine me fighting a monster just to go for a dodge role, and trigger a loading screen, and due to my vision, not even being aware of the position I need to be in to prevent this one happening, but these titles look amazing

Hunter styles are definitely one of my favorite features and I'd love to see specifically Aerial and Adept come back because of what they offer (Adept guard feels incredible and I'm so glad Lance got it in Rise). I'm not sure I'd say GU is the best in the series, could probably argue 4U, but I do think it's a league above 5th gen.... That might be bias though because I really dislike how World watered so many weapons down to focusing on one big move. Like CB being entirely SAED focused, GS being entirely TCS, LS being Helmsplitter, etc. For all the added fluidity of movement it really felt like that customization aspect took a huge hit, there was almost no diversity to armor sets because of the live service style endgame rollout combined with the focus on these big moves. No reason to run a draw build on GS when all the drawing attack buffs can't be used on TCS and regular charged slashes can't really compete. At least Rise brought some back, and I really hope Wilds has some degree of it. Switch skills are a really cool middle ground and I'd love to see them in a mainline game.

I hope one day they either remake or port MH4U to the Switch/PC. I want to replay it again but I remember not loving having to play it on the DS. With the footage side by side, I feel more confident in saying I prefer the lighting and color of the older games. Monsters are more vibrant and pop out more, things are a bit crispier. I hate the blurry dirt brown filter that World introduced. Worse yet alot of the footage of Wilds seemingly has the same issue.

My absolute FAVORITE thing about this games aesthetic is the fantastical and almost otherworldly presentation of normal environments! 8:16 showcases this but i think its wonderful that instead of simply creating a typical and believable set of environmental backgrounds they chose to make incredibly imposing and painting like environments for the player to gaze into, supporting this feeling that whilst the hunters and villages have learned to live in this world and even command some of the elements of it, at the end of the day, the natural environment they live in is still utterly frightening, awe-inspiring and indifferent to those that do not command its respect (lest we get more unusually malicious monsters like fatalis and Amatsu spawning every century). Following that is the way it feels to deal with these monsters. World to some extent manages to achieve this quite well (and unfortunately its lost completely in rise) but GU's monster encounters feel exciting and tense because of the balance of the items, weapon arts and styles. Granted the game starts to be a kind of silly with the late game monsters, some of the Hyper fights and the deviants (i WILL ERADICATE EVERY SILVERWIND NARGACUGA EVEN IF THE GUILD TRIES TO STOP ME), but i like it more when the fight feels in the monsters favor - when the impression of being on their home turf is supported - that my survival is incredibly dependent on my experience and understanding of its biology, environment and my ability to adapt to whatever comes my way. RAAAAGH ONE MORE THING! The sound design is IMMACULATE and is a slightly underrated aspect of world and th 4th generation games. Hitting a monster with a giant hunk of metal has never felt so good.

Another great thing that Great Maccao teaches new players is the value of breaking parts. If you break Great Maccao’s tail, he will fall over when he tries to balance on it later. I couldn’t agree more that it’s easily the best starting monster when it comes to teaching game mechanics.

Another thing not mentioned that makes Maccao the best starting monster is that it teaches the player about sharpness the best. Even after an upgrade or two, you are very likely to dip into orange (or even red if you absolutely refuse to sharpen), and this even happens in the tutorial arena fights. Maccao also has parts that will bounce if you're at orange, something other starter monsters don't really do.

19:11 Not only that, you could also slot in the Fortress Walls hunter art which instead of evading, tanks every attack without flinching, makes you inmune to abnormal status, and makes you take SIGNIFICANTLY less damage at the cost of not being able to evade or run, with this you can keep the offensive without worrying of being flung around or carting. Great to deal with monsters with scary charge attacks or a big monster that you could be able to hit anyways without you moving that much. Just another way in which MHGU let's you experiment with mechanics. Love the video ❤

I also love MHGU a lot. It'd probably rate it just barely above Rise, which is above World, and that's my top 3. (For the record, I started back in Freedom Unite on the PSP, with the infamous Plesioth hitbox of the MH Freedom games.) I really think they could do great things with the style system if they refined it a bit and brought it back. Rise does have some elements of it with almost-hunter-arts and a few pseudo-style options (like the alternate moveset for the greatsword that focuses on quick swings rather than charged ones), but the really great part about the styles was how they offered completely different approaches to combat, even within the same style. As you said, Striker Style can be either incredibly agressive, throwing everything and the kitchen sink at the monster, or very defensive by stacking evasive arts. But the same also goes for Adept. It's mechanically defensive, offering an improved dodge with extended I-frames, and with skills like Evade Extender and Evasion +X, it'll be like trying to catch mist, while at the same time it rewards a playstyle that would be suicidally agressive with other styles since you are expected to constantly use that dodge in order to access your most powerful moves. That said, I must give World credit for another major upgrade that you didn't really touch on. The UI changes, both in the way it allows access to useful information (Hunting Horn no longer requiring post-it notes being one of the most obvious) and the mechanical changes like the item wheel, allowing incredibly quick access to important items without spamming a button to flip through the item bar. But, on the other hand, it also really screwed up with things like the clutch claw. It was a cool idea, but it's execution turned every fight into "it's been 30 seconds, time to grapple and tenderize again" which completely killed the flow of the game.

I got MHF and MHFU as a dual pack on the PSP when I was like 8 years old cus its cover looked cool (Rathalos). Absolutely fell in love with the games, and MHFU was far and away the game I played the most. And objectively, these are some of the jankiest MH games ever made. I still have nightmares about plesioth. I mean, I didn't even know how to get the thing out of the water. But I tell you, the nostalgia does something else for me. I think of MHFU more fondly than World, even though World is a far more enjoyable game. The new games just miss something. A je ne sais quoi - I really can't put my finger on it. I haven't played GU (and i want to badly, please release on PC Capcom), but in my opinion, you'd be hard pressed to have a better final boss than Fatalis in Iceborne. I played that fight for like 16 hours straight. I stayed up all night playing it until I finally beat it. It was one of the best, probably the best end game boss fight in any game I've ever played. I then fought him many, many more times to get max level armor and different weapons to play around in the end game. Even writing this I want to go fight him again. The fight is a masterpiece. I loved everything about it. Though many of the fights in world were all spectacle and not actually good fights, Fatalis was a major exception. The serpenty way he moved and his model was so intimidating. And his huge grandiose fire attacks were all integrated well in to a fantastic fight, destroying most of the arena the first time, melting the metal barricade the second time, etc. Even though I love world/iceborne so much, I still wouldn't necessarily say it's any better than 3U. Both are top tier games in my opinion. And the old style is just as good as the new. Some things are better about each. So I wouldn't say that World is better than GU, but in terms of final boss fights, I don't really think anything is a clear winner against Iceborne, despite bosses like Xeno Jiva/Safi Jiva/etc being not really that interesting or fun.

I’m proud to say MHGU is my favorite in the series. It was my first taste of the old gen games since I played Tri way back in the day. I was a little bit skeptical about the styles and arts at first, since I hated wirebug arts in Rise, but I quickly took a liking to them here. I think the reason I like them in GU is because the arts actually feel special, since it does take a while to charge them up. They feel like trump cards, while in Rise you kind of spam them and it actually compromises the core gameplay I’m wanting. Also, this might be the MH boomer in me talking but, the old school item management and difficulty are the cherry on top for me. You can call me crazy, but Rathalos’s roar into fireball true combo you called out is interesting to me, because you need to prepare armor skills for specific fights; earplugs being the example for Rathalos. It makes the monsters more threatening and the accomplishment of beating them greater and GU definitely brings this feeling back.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is a "celebration" between the old generation of Monster Hunter, if I should say. It's straight up the best of all worlds, combined. They brought back most of the best things of what made MH1-4 great, and combine it into one, dense pack of Monster Hunter. Not only that, they added some spices into their gameplay, which allows for an actual personalized playstyle that works depending on how you play and your mindset when hunting a monster in general. You have the choice to play more defensively, or go on the offensive as much as you can, while being still rewarded as long as you know what you're doing. And, you're not really forced to do a specific thing (with very few exceptions in terms of Deviants and Hypers, yet they're endgame monsters anyway). This is also puts up the reason why people hate clutch claw mechanic --- It does have massive advantage, still (wallbang, tenderize, enrage on demand), but it forces you to play a playstyle that revolves only around it. It is less noticeable on 4-player hunts, but it's absolutely pain in the ass when playing solo where you HAVE to use that mechanic no matter what. I'd rather do "A Very Long Engravement" compared to deal with tenderizing mechanic all over again.

In my opinion Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is better, because of the Monster List. There are so many Monsters to Fight, well and I like the older Titles more because they're much more unforgiving, ruthless and punishing, make a mistake and you're Monster food. The Newer Titles do much more "Handholding" wich annoys me to Death, because I know where the Series has its Roots. I would almost say that the older Titles are the "Dark Souls" of Monster Hunter. I know that they wanted more players to enjoy the game so they did their best to make it more appealing to the masses, the problem here is i've tried to introduce my friends to the newer Titles and they still complained about the game like "the combat is slow" or "it feels Clunky" even if they played something like the Dualblades or some other "fast paste" Weapons. Alot of people like me just Finished the Games and never touched them again, they're all just get back playing the older Titles because they enjoyed them more, they were more rewarding if you finally Killed that one Monster you got Stuck on for like a Week or so trying over and over. In World/Iceborne or Rise/Sunbreak I pretty much Killed every Monster first try and if the Armor had better stats I killed it over and over until i got my gear but I got no Enjoyment out of it, until much later when the Grind for Gear began, with the Materials having Droprates that were borderline unfair.
