Over magic allows for casting spells at a higher tier and greater effect than what would normally be possible at the cost of a lot of mana. Cocytus was interested in this because he was unaware of such an affect existing. In all likelyhood it is a New World technique created to counter the limitations of being confined to tier 3 and below spells for the majority of the populace.

There are "fights" and then there are "duals". There are no rules in a "fight" because a fight is about winning at all cost. A "dual" is a matter of honor. It's about following a code. A dual is fought over the things that define the participants. It's a personal thing. You can be dirty in a "fight" but it's an act of shamelessness and despicable behavior to break the terms of a dual. Like the difference between a street brawl and a sanctioned boxing match.

@@UrPPhard Not exactly. If I remember the novel correctly, it's just a matter of trying to have the guardian grow and take their own decisions. He purposefully set up cocytus to fail, not because he wanted him to fail, but because he wanted to test the faith they have in him and test his ability to take his own decision. Afterward, he simply tried to act as a mighty lord, since he was still worried that they would realize he's an idiot and would stop following him.

I like both the gradual increase of admiration in Cocytus towards the Lizardmen, as i like the way he doesn't give a crap about their attacks.

I love how a passive skill that is just supposed to do small consistent damage and apply negative effects just out right kills most of the Lizardmen, plus that was when Cocytus was holding the skill back to prevent it from hitting the Lizardmen village too.

Level cap in the new world is like 20 with anyone beyond that being an exception. This is basically level 20 and below VS level 100. It's like taking an epic level character from an epic campaign and pitting him against standard level characters from a standard campaign.

@@rupom5881 No, 30 isn't the cap. It's agreed upon in universe that you can't go beyond 20 without special circumstance. You have to have special skills, abilities, talents, or a method to go beyond 20. 20 is the natural cap.

No. The fight was over......before it even began. The lizardmen were about level 10 to about 25. Cocytus is about 80 to 100, with OP gear and skills.

Cocytus is the definition of a true warrior: he’s physically strong as well as magically as well. He is willing to fight his own battles and most importantly he shows respect for his enemy

Mare has the strongest AoE attacks, Albedo has the highest defense, Cocytus the highest attack, and Demiurge and Aura use subordinates in exchange for poor power of their own. Rubedo is stronger than a world champion, but we do not know how far her power goes

All of the guardians have similar power levels, but in different forms. The guy above me was more detailed. Though even in one-on-one combat, liteally all of the guardians (except for Victim, who is a low level because he was created to die) would seem to be equally capable to the lizardmen because the level jump is massive. I think the highest leveled lizardmen are like in their 20's. Gazef and Brain are about level 30, and I believe if I remember correctly that Evil Eye is level 50 (she is the strongest member of the Blue Roses). I think a genearl rule ist hat most adamantite adventurers are between level 30 and 40 though All of the guardians (except Victim) are level 100. Sebas is also level 100, but the maids are between level 50 and 80

Basically for reference, it's metamagic, but they replace tiered magic slots for MP since it is a video game system after all. Slight Cure Wounds: At base, this is Cure Light Wounds. Low rank healing. In 5e, they replaced this with just Cure Wounds and let you cast it at higher levels instead of allocating a separate slot for Moderate and Greater variations. Overmagic: Metamagic. In this sense, it would be like intensified spell, you are spending more resources to get a better effect. It's still the same spell, but it does more than before. Mass: Exactly as it is said on the tin. Like Cure Wounds, but Mass Cure Wounds instead. Throwing it in, the series also has the following: Triplet: Likely an upgrade to Twinning. On the same spell, you are copying a spell twice. Maximize: As it is said, you are ignoring the random variable of the spell and treating everything as the maximum amount of damage it could inflict. Ainz's MP is such that he can readily throw out tripped out 10th level spells back to back. It's likely that the spells that he chose to use against Shalltear cost effectively 3x the normal cost of the same spell cast by a floor guardian but still wins in a battle of endurance. A member that also specialized in this is Ulbert, but instead of MP, he focused on Magic damage. The result is that his primary strategy is just to alpha strike things to death. He can easily overpower Ainz in terms of raw power and is capable of doing it in many different ways, but his drawback is that if anyone somehow lives against his assault, he probably has a very low chance of ever getting out of dodge.

@@lunerblade13 Apparently we were both wrong in the wording, it apparently is allowing the user to cast above their rated magic at higher cost. Apparently the equivalent in Overlord for upcasting is Boost Magic.

Overmagic probably meaning he's casting a weaker spell at a higher strength. Mass Slight Cure Wounds being a full body version of Slight Cure Wounds, a weak version of Cure Wounds In this universe it probably is the equivalent to having magically done full body surgery on someone. It probably cost that guy twice the MP to cast it as an Overmagic, but still not as much as if he were casting regular Cure Wounds. That's just my take on it without having any context to the "game's" real rules. So he cast a weak heal spell that heals all parts of a person's body, at essentially twice the strength.

I think it's a basic AoE spell that alters the environment, because Ains has a similar spell he used against the Trolls and the Ogre. The only thing is that the spell Cocytus used was held back a crapload, and he could have turned the entire swamp into a frozen wasteland.

It's one of Cocytus's passive skills. He can't completely turn it off, but he can weaken it like he did here. If he had it at full power, they would've all died before reaching him.

Meltman Specifically, *all* the lizardmen would have died, even the ones watching from the village (LN). It's a skill coming from an extremely high-end class, so he had to be incredibly careful when releasing it here; he normally keeps it on with the aoe limited to himself (he likes the cold), but he also had to tone down the damage to ensure that the leaders would survive.
