TBF he does have S moments as well such as in Volume 5 ir 6 (I'm not 100% sure due to binging the series rly) where dude outright starts choking Maomao (she didn't seem to mind it apparently, maybe she's also an M? I suppose it would make sense given how insane she is when it comes to poisons that she tests on herself, as some poisons do cause constriction of the throat among other symptoms, so maybe she's been pavlov'd to like the feeling due to all the poisons she's CONSOOM'd over the years etc) presumably as a type of proving a point or w/e, but she pretty much calls his bluff which makes him kinda back off due to having lost to her in the mental aspect of things, after which the next volume or w/e the 2 spend the entire volume avoiding each other

Notice Maomao's expression at 2:02 when the lady-in-waiting starts crying. Before this she was furious, angrily calling the lady out for her idiocy (and for good reason). But when the lady stats sobbing Maomao's face softens and her tone is less critical though still stern. This confirms for Maomao and for us that the lady-in-waiting didn't do what she did out of malice-she just thought she was doing what was right. Knowing how women historically put beauty above their health, the lady-in-waiting was probably taught to be this way, which makes the whole situation more tragic. ...but the slap was still deserved 👍

For those curious on what the white powder is, it's lead powder makeup. Originally made during the 18th century, during a fashion craze, where being pale was seen as beautiful or majestic. However most people didn't know lead was poisonous at this time but that's why it was banned after the information was discovered

Well given her new environment- it’s likely she’s eating well and staying in shape from the amount of drama around the palace. Servants can be the most in fit people due to the work they do, majority of labor so the nobles don’t have to. The lady in waiting are often see but not heard, their looks and loyalty to their lady put before physical ability. Plus - this girl had received hard blows before from the madame of the pleasure house. She no doubt knows how to throw down.

I’ll preface by saying I’ve not watched this show or read it’s source material if it has. The amount of detail in the character acting is just outstanding in so many degrees. It’s not just the animation or the voice acting, it’s the direction of this sequence that is making this as good as it is. It’s the direction and storyboards of this clip. I don’t even know who these people are and what are their stories, but I felt the fury in the girl and then the sheer regret in the makeup lady. There are two things I love this part of the show: One: Maomao has an inner dark side in her where it shows how serious she was when people don't listen to her. Plus, she gave straight up facts of the knowledge she knows behind the powder that the other ladies didn't. The scary face and tone gives me dead vibes like she has the blood of Tanya Two: The voice actor (Aoi Yuki) who voices Maomao did a excellent job for this part. I'm very happy she got to play this show. I hope she gets to play other future shows. P.S That slap thou was dopping awesome. It literally felt real I jump from that lol 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

Consort Lihua really must have a forgiving side to her considering the lady-in-waiting had been using a banned material that was poisonous, regardless of ignorance. I was a little surprised she got off so lightly given the time period, coming out of it unharmed and managing to keep her position. I was half expecting her to get demoted to the maid staff at the least. Historically women like her had gotten far worse punishments for far less.

There's a story of China, probably apocryphal but entirely believable, that the Emperor had the idea to train his concubines in battle so they could defend him. His general, usually Sun Tzu in most tellings, tells the emperor that this is stupid, but he'll do it only if he has full say in what happens, even if it kills them. Day one, the concubines are giggling girls playing at soldier. At the end of the day, the general asks for the emperor's favorite concubine. He then beheads her for not taking it seriously. Day two, the concubines took it seriously. This scene has the same energy. "You were told that this is a matter of life and death. If words will not get into your head, maybe this will."

I've read up to volume 3 in the light novel and this specific scene is definitely one of my favorites. So, to see it in the anime was a real treat. It's just somehow even more satisfying to watch than it was to read.

A few episodes later, isnt this same handmaiden one of the only ones who doesnt bully and also fear MaoMao at the garden party? Or am I mistaken? I like the thought that after realising that MaoMao was here to do a job and that they were actively harming her efforts, this handmaiden in particular might have formed a more respectful opinion of MaoMao (even if she probably is still lowkey scared of our girl)

Damn, i'm amazed by how smoothly the tone of the scenes shifted, and of course the VA work in this was spectalular! I've only seen the chocolate making clip and now this, but now i have to watch the show

The sad thing, though is this is by no means a fictitious type of event I guess you could say. Unfortunately, several makeups, and other substances that were used by concubines or other individuals actually did have a very very detrimental effect. I don’t remember exactly, but I believe the face powder is leased with a form of lead. Which you know gives it that bright white color. And wow, I can understand why the ladies and waiting would not know about this because well things like lead poisoning outside of very specific fields of study, wasn’t really that well known. In fact , there were times where it was actually believed that drinking from a lead lined vessel, was actually beneficial to your health. Not only that, but it apparently part of a small amount of flavor into your drink.

What traitor? The lady is a moron not a traitor. She did it genuinely with good intentions not with malicious intent as she intended to make the concubine happy. She’s stupid because she didn’t take the warning seriously and needed the wake up call that her good intentions were only make her lady more ill. We can tell her lady didn’t hold it against her later when she was allowed to serve her again. Likewise the whole thing humbled her greatly.

@@V01DIORE Not lead based. Arsenic based makeup. It wouldn't have been that lethal were it "just" lead based (still very dangerous, but it wouldn't have killed babies like that).

I saw two quick clips of this show before, and thought I'd give it a try. My god is this REALLY good. I thought it would be a somewhat cute thing, i hadn't seen THIS scene but no, its got cute but the whole PALACE INTRIQUE thing adds this whole other dimension that elevates this show. I wish id discovered it at the end so i could binge watch it because after watching all 7 episodes, having to wait SUCKS! Highly recommended!
