She didn’t like or trust Lakan after he abandoned Fengxian, and whilst she’d take his money, from her perspective, she doesn’t think he deserves to know or see her after the pain and ruin he caused her. To the best of her knowledge, he left willingly, and didn’t come back until it was much too late. That was one of her best ‘girls’, and whilst she is money hungry and runs a brothel, she still cares about them a lot and would have known how much Fengxian liked him compared to her other regulars. I think people also gloss over that, for the time, she wasn’t obligated to look after Fengxian. She’d have been justified at kicking her out on the street for good, after lowering the status of the brothel and herself like she did. But she still tried to keep her safe, tried to keep her as comfortable as possible as the infection progressed and tried to protect her and her daughter from what she considered threats.

This isn't that, this is just like an elderly couple that looks at their partner and sees them for the person they were in their 20s/30s because who they are on the inside matters more to them than what they look like. That's the point this scene is trying to make. She may be withered but she's still a rose.

Meimei, while a little on the older side, still shows no sings of slowing down, she’s not “withered” at all. It is very clear that the courtesan Maomao wanted to get bought out was her mother, which also makes sense from her perspective, even if she doesn’t particularly care for either of her parents, she still looks over Fengxian and knows Lakan better than anyone, it just makes sense to let the, be together since it doesn’t take anything away from Maomao, guarantees that her mother will be looked after even better than on the pleasure district, and gets her father off her back for a while while he goes on his honeymoon. Plus, she knows that Lakan doesn’t particularly care for Meimei (at least in that way), so that’d just doom her to a one sided marriage for the rest of her life. By removing the option of Lakan being her’s, Maomao forces Meimei to look somewhere else for love

Feng Xian's marriage to La Kan meant Mao Mao is no longer a commoner or an illegitimate lovechild anymore. Which also means that she has noble status herself with full weight of the La clan backing her. If the theory of Jin Shi is the Emperor's child which was swapped with the former Empress was true, that would means he is true heir. Mao Mao is eligible to marry him and become Queen.

In Fengxian's defense syphilis is a horrid disease that causes extreme outbursts of rage. She may have never actually started out completely horrible to Maomao. Does it excuse what she did before the disease? No. But the disease literally robs you of self-control and empathy because of brain damage. Towards the end, she wasn't cognitive what she was doing and could never get the chance to make amends.

Them ❤. I don’t know if anything was missing in each adaptation, but the love they felt for each other was extremely charming. I think that if it weren’t for others, they would be chasing each other. He couldn’t return for over a year or two, so she thought he was gone/never coming back for her. They made him think that she was truly dead, gone, never to be seen again, practically killing his hope when he was barred from entry. If absence truly makes the heart fonder, than that amount of time apart supercharged their reunion.

Two things can be true at one time: Maomao has no feelings toward Lakan yes but she also knows this isn’t about her The wilted flower was a message about Fengxian which would give Lakan the answer he wanted all this time. On the other hand Maomao wants Meimei to live a good life. No Lakan probably won’t like her back but Meimei would have the best ending that a woman could. She would be living with a wealthy man(who she likes) and wouldn’t be in the red light district. Both of these events happening were possible and Maomao knew this. She probably would’ve preferred that Meimei got bought out as that’s who helped raise her however Lakan finding the woman he loved would also make her life easier(since he wouldn’t be searching for a way to hold on to the last piece of Fengxian’s memory through Maomao). There’s a lot behind both outcomes which makes this bittersweet moment so well written.

Is it ever explained why all the letters fengxian sent lakan never made it to him and got stuck in the palace? I assume that the palace knew he was forced to go somewhere else after the scandal with his uncle so why did the mail system not deliver the letters to the proper new address he was stuck in for three years?

Really breaks my heart... Lakan is an awkward and derpy dude with people, but so sad how he and Fengxian ended up cause of his stupid family sending him away and never getting to tell her (and sad she never was able to find out).
