We actually don't really known for sure. A lote of theory goes around saying he's probably a Wendigo. While it's seems a good thinking, I personnally don't believe that; The fact that Elias for his first meeting associate the word "human" with a child size is very descriptive of his character and maybe, of who he was before. I think he's a child, that for some reaon, got transformed into something.
