Chise confronts Joseph at last and tries to find a way to heal both of their hurts. Not wanting Chise's help, Joseph gravely wounds her, but Chise uses the opportunity to remove the piece of her from him and lull Joseph to sleep so that he can weather the passage of time without suffering.

I like the representation of Chise's abilities, they're all part of the teachers she's had. Her fiery power is like Elias, while her song power is a reminder that Llindel had a large influence on her.

I like that one of the points of the series is that there's no such thing as a "valid excuse" to hurt people...but at the same time Chise did pretty much the only thing she could do. She can't kill him. Nothing can.

after season 2 has come it's interesting to see him more as an advisor to Chise while obviously still not being a good person. Chise could use someone like him to really have a better grasp on the dangers of the real world and to serve as a reminder she has to protect herself and have survival instincts. I'm hoping when season 3 comes we get a back to the more fae elements of the show and the small cast of characters. i really didnt care for the huge introduction of secondary characters that season 2 brought along because i couldnt find myself caring about most of them and we spend waaaay to much time on Philomela

Random thought, all mages get a chant. A means to use their powers. I think Chise may have found hers. Which is interesting to me because it is a song, like Lindel, but also about flowers while Elias' is about thorns and holly. It also a song her mother sung, a happy thought from her past rather than the bitterness. It shows a synthesis and her growth through her mentors and her personal revelations about moving on, but not forgetting her past

This scene hit so hard. It was probably the first time Joseph was ever shown compassion and gentleness. The first time he was ever really seen for the lonely suffering boy he was. Not sure he can ever really be redeemed for the heinous things he's done, but I'm really happy he got to feel kindness for once.

Chimeras were just a product of him taking body parts from others, so he could have new body parts, becouse his body was decomposing. I suppose he was trying to find some way to get rid of his curse by "researching" what would happen if he combined different parts of different things.

(2 years late, but still) I think it was mentioned in one of the earlier episodes. Her sleigh beggy nature kills her body just as much as it heals it, ie it helps her regenerate at inhuman speed but her body can't really take it for many more years

This is where the series "lost me". Ok...so Chise and Cartophilus/Joseph/whoever both got each other's curses. He got the dragon's curse, and she got his really-horrendous-immortality curse. In that case, the end of this segment doesn't make sense to me. If the curses "canceled each other out", as implied with Chise, shouldn't Joseph be "cured" too? If the curses DIDN'T cancel each other out and Joseph is still going to live to be an eternal blight on anyone unfortunate enough to cross paths with him as he lives out his own personal Hell until the end of time, isn't that going to happen to Chise too?

Here's my understanding: Chise has a tiny part of the Immortality Curse, Joseph has a tiny part of the Dragon Curse. Their original curses are stronger than the fraction they received from the other, since it takes up a larger part of their body

Curses didn`t cancel each other out, but one day, possibly when Chise herself will decide, Dragon Curse will kill her and Immortality Curse will allow it. It`s like an inside deal. For Joseph, it`s possible that he made curse much worse for himself, trying to murder, kill or break havoc upon everyone. Like, he does cut himself to pieces to switch them with pieces of others, is he not?

Even though the archetype of the Wandering Jew is kind of inherently antisemitic no matter what you try to do with it by virtue of the raw historical baggage attached, I like to think that A) the mangaka included it more out of ignorance and her fascination with European myth and occultism, and that consequently B) that context and the empathy with which Joseph and Cartaphilus are treated says something profound about cultural exchange and the different immediate impressions one might have of a story totally foreign to you Not that I can really blame any Jewish would-be viewers for not engaging with the series, in much the same way that I can fault anyone for not wanting to watch due to the early-series optics of Elias buying a child-bride, but it is food for thought I suppose.
