One trend amongst game development I have noticed throughout the last 3 decades that is true of so many games is that the addition of 3D graphics is too often a sales gimmick that detracts from the quality of the gameplay. Especially strategy games...

It's killing air combat games, and really a lot of genres that used to be super fun. They spend so much time on art and making sure things are "accurate" that they don't focus on the most important part, which is fun gameplay. There's a new game coming out called Battlebit Remastered. It's like what Battlefield should be. Much more fun, and the graphics are pretty much Minecraft level. But it allows the devs to throw in new content very quickly since they don't have to spend months designing vehicles or guns

At this point idgaf about graphics, give me gameplay/mechanics with depth, complexity, variety in play style, and strategy that's engaging and keeps me coming back. Quit trying to manipulate me into playing your game, your "Player Engagement" philosophy has never and will never work on a lot of us. We see it coming a mile away. Make a good game with gameplay mechanics that have depth and we will naturally want to engage it on our own. We're like cats, doesn't matter what fkn name you call us or what little stupid tricks you try we aren't coming to you till we decide we want to.

I'll agree with that, the thing i like about modern games is accessibility, better UI etc... the old games in general are headache for this. Now about shallow gameplay, that's developer's fault, modern times have so much potential.

what I loved avout ck2 is that it doesnt take itself very seriously while still having excellent and deep mechanics. I love ck3 too but it just seems so anemic compared to its predecessor
@KikomochiMendoza
@KikomochiMendoza Жыл бұрын
It seems anemic because devs deliberately left out some core gameplay elements that they plan to release as DLCs. The recent DLCs, especially the activities one was a literal game changer. I suspect that will carry on in the future DLCs, one of which I suspect allows you to play as a Republic or even as a Theocrat.

Wow. I am still to play (not even bought yet) CK III. It is been a few years since my last CKII campaign. To be honest, adulthood has stripped me away from almost any free time, and lets be honest, grand strategy games are very much time consuming. Lately my gaming time has been very casual at the best. But watching this video was a very welcome trip in the memory lane. So many fond memories from playing this game, gosh. Next free weekend I surely will bring this boy back and play for a few hours on the row for old time sake's. Thank you for bringing back these presumably forgotten memories.

My issue now that I'm older is by the time I get home from work I just don't feel like sitting Infront of the computer and playing a lot of the time. I was a hardcore FPS player for decades, but around the time CoD BO Cold War came out I was 30-31 and just couldn't do it anymore. That's when I got into Total War games and now I'm starting to look into Paradox games as well.

Yeah, CK III is way too barebones, it's fun, but once you've played it for a few weeks there really isn't anything new and exciting it can offer you. This video got me excited about CK II again, i'm sure eventually CK III will outshine CK II but for now, i should probably stick to CK II. On a sidenote, would love to see you do a video on good CK II mods that enhance gameplay.

what I most miss in CK3 fro. CK2 are the societies and orders. I just loved the flavour of dedicating myself to a spiritual or intellectual society. The life of one ruler may not be spent on enlargening the realm but rather entirely on bettering himself. In CK3 there just seems to be way too little options for engaging gameplay when its not about conquering titles or rising to ruler of your own independent realm. I can seduce and romance characters but all I get is "yep you did it" or "awe you failed" notices. No actual gameplay follows the seductions, no livid husband declares war on me despite being outmatched. the only thing I can do is exploit the affair for territorial gain either through plots to inherit more realms or through blackmail and sabotage in war.

Have over 3,500 hours in CK2, and it never bored me. CK3, while pretty, just feels a little bit hollow. It feels way too easy too. Sure, CK3 has artefacts now but I still preferred them in CK2. You didn't get as many but they felt way more personal and important. And bloodlines! Gutted they aren't in CK3. I used to love collecting them. Not for everyone I know, but at least you have the option in CK2.

CK3 has GUI scaling. CK2 was made in an era where 720p resolution was most common with gamers and 1080p was just about to be most adopted. Now 1440p is standard and 4k is becoming more popular. CK2 is absolute hell on high res high dpi monitors. With 4K I actually have to scale up GUI to 150% of normal to be comfortable.

Hah, I never saw those ads but they are awesome. CK3 is fun for a couple of campaigns, but its a bit too simple and easy to hold my interest. It's my first CK game, and I can't help but point to things its lacking that even Total War Medieval 2 had and its insistence on continuing to be menu based instead of context based, which would make it much more readable. EU4 has a lot of options and intricacy, but even there the complexity isn't too severe, its more surface level mechanics that are often somewhat optional, but at least it has enough to keep you constantly busy and thinking about your next actions. I'd really like to see them work with deeper mechanics instead of more (such a population generated by region status consumed by war that grows organically which also effects income, trade and health - or trade based on the growth of the nations trading and their ability to sustain routes and trade relations instead of sit on a node, modeling forts after reality and needing troop and food supply, the ability to engage in conversion efforts and effect religion other than in your own regions, cultures that grow and aren't deckbased, an actual intricate technology tree with options to consider, etc.), but if CK3 at least gets this level of engagement I would consider it a victory. CK2 does sound really interesting though and I've been meaning to try it. The simple pop system and anti-realistic trade in Victoria 3 does concern me even if it looks like it might be a fun game akin to Anno series. Heck, just giving each region its historical inheritance methods would vary the game up greatly and instantly add a level of complexity from interacting with the other systems, instead of basing it on the HRE, or having more intricate nobility ranks instead of basing it on the English scheme edit: The map and graphics are actually better in CK2 in a lot of ways. Menus in CK3 look like modern tablet interface, CK2 presents everything in scroll and stonework with a map that looks realistic.

Still better than CK3? Yes. Way better. Apart from the fact that it has way more content and replayability 1+ years after CK3 came out (which is unacceptable, let's be real), it also has better music. My story is similar to yours too. Was a hardcore Total War fan, tried CK2 one day after seeing those amazing trailers and became instantly addicted to it. The absolute unmitigated calamity that Rome 2 turned out to be only solidified the death of Total War for me, and their migration from history to fantasy with Warhammer solidified it even more. I enjoy fantasy, but history is where my heart is. I played CK3 for around 60 hours total before giving up, and it's honestly probably that I'll never even install it again. I just found it boring. I don't think it'll ever be able to fill CK2's shoes. Currently playing CK2 again after taking a break for a couple of years and closing in on 2,200 hours. I bet I'll hit 3,000 hours in 2023. In fact, I think I'll be playing this game on-and-off for the rest of my life. There's literally nothing else like it.

Fun fact about ambient soundtracks: much cheaper and easier to produce (comparatively little actual music to have made to complete the soundtrack) so a lot of strategy games have shifted to the cheaper option. Between Rome 2 and Attila, Total War games removed distinct melodies and by Warhammer 1 almost removed all non ambient soundtracks entirely. If you look up a modern Total War game's soundtrack each faction will have a 3 minute leitmotif and about 20-30 minutes of generic ambient remixes, whereas old games had entire albums of distinct songs based around the geography of the game's setting

Considering Paradox litteraly made the BASE GAME 100% free for the rest of eternity, kinda no reason not to at least check it out. Wait....are those ACTUAL trailer for the DLC?! Oh my god, a DLC happy company with a sense of humor! Anyway, the fact that you play as "people" who are part of a "nation" is what makes Crusader Kings stand out among its fell Paradox or grand strategy titles in my opinion. Even just watching someone play it on KZbin, you get invested in their "story" and want to see how it plays out as each episode gets uploaded. Care to make DLC guide perhaps?

@@AndysTake I dunno if I really like one more than the other. I have had a lot of fun with both. I don't think either are particularly complex games. Maybe ck2 is a bit more, but I only played it once all the DLC was already out so it's hard to know what it was like before they added content and systems to try and compare like for like. I suppose we will have to wait and see. Once CK3 is sort of "done" with content maybe it will be better or worse. My money is on that they will both have a niche and might be better at different things they are quite different currently. Time will tell. But if I was going to go for complexity EU4 is the one that I enjoy the most for that. I really think that none of the historic PDX titles really stack up against it, and in a lot of ways CK2 is more like EU4 currently than CK3 is. So I totally get what you mean ;)

I own both CK2 and CK3 but hardly played either. I feel like shit about CK2 cause I even bought all the DLCs and stuff and I KNOW it's a game I'd love. But I always default to Eu4 for my Paradox fix. Finally started some CK3 and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. But when I try CK2 the UI by comparison is way too much. It's tiny on a 1440p screen so I gotta use the UI scaler, but that still hardly helps with the insane amount of stuff there is to do. I just get lost in the sauce every time but considering all the money spent I really wanna get into it. CK3 seems way easier at a glance and I can find what I wanna find out pretty intuitively. Graphically speaking I actually prefer CK2.

Though I do like some mechanics that ck3 has right now. With the stress system. The royal court, dynasty building. And deeper life focuses.

Consider the only gameplay loop of CK3 since launch is just saying no to those feast spam. Yes CK2 is still better. With some mod to fix some annoying bug that they left in and never bother to fix of course.

CK 3 needs like 3 more years to be even comparable to CK2. Even then it might be worse than CK2. Ck3 feels too casual for me. Like some android game.

Ck3 alrdy got tones of new basic and very realistic mecanics that doesnt exist in ck2, so imo your comparison is not fair enough. (Im a ck2 hardcore player tho)

To me this is answered by how much DLC you have for 2. If you have many, most, all, even a few, yes, ck2 is better. But if like me you only played it because it was free and never bought any of the dlc, well, then no, 3 is better. Even just being able to be a non christian right away makes it better, since in the base of 2 that was an instant game over if your heir turned out to be a pagan or muslum.

@@TheVoices69 I forgot the character editor. Yeah, that's PAID dlc still, somehow. And don't get me wrong, I had a BLAST in base ck2. There's still a TON there, but I was very annoyed when my one playthrough came to an end because my heir was pagan. My only complaints about 3 are small things, like UI differences, and those may very well change as the game goes on, and are hardly game wrecking as is. It's change and I don't like it. Nyeah.

Ck3 got way more complex basic mecanics (dinasty, religion, culture, legacy, war) and a more reliable UI especially for repetitive and time consuming tasks. Now what relly still lacks is content. Gameplay(random events, random relational behaviors) and graphic content, but the ground base is a bit more deep than ck2 in my opinion. (Im hardcore ck2 who transitioned to ck3 since a year)
@BioTheHuman
@BioTheHuman Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but I strongly disagree. I don't really see the "complex mechanics" in the ones you cited (and neither in the ones you didn't). Sure, I'd like to have Ck3 cultures, religions and dynasties in CK2, but a part from the rp flavour they bring, but apart from this, what does really remain? What I don't really like about CK3 is how a lot of things just become simple skill trees. Skill trees give an awesome feeling of accomplishment and achievement to the player (that's why they're omnipresent in videogames) but they stop doing so in the moment you need to repeat such task again and again, especially in a game where every run should feel different and you should be able to do many runs. Even worst if behind those skill tree you hide essential player actions in a game that already lacks player freedom.

@@BioTheHuman @Bio im a forever ck2 player, and a 1year ck3 player so im talking based on facts not assumptions... this debat wont go anywhere since you are either very hardly biased toward ck2 or you got a very big misunderstading of whats the difference between a system and a content, why im saying that? Because that would be very hard and painful to argue with someone who starts by saying "culture, religion, dinasty" are flavor, when in facts its 3 huge very deep mechanics that add an infinite replayabilty and combinations and complexity layer to the game, and it has nothing to do with flavor or content, and your sentence could be literally used for every ck2/3 mechanic -> "ok i would like to have traits, but apart that its just a flavor, so what?"... its literally strong systems which were implemented to the vanilla ck3 which adds a looot i can write a book about it after that i used them. So for those reasons we cant even start that debate, it would be very hard to even stand on the same line of thinking since we dont event see or analyse things with the same level. Ck3 definetly started stronger than ck2 in term of natural mechanics that combine together, now its just about time to see more "content" , and i say a second time , im a ck2 player too but i try to stay objective.
