A Canadian veteran, who was dubbed as one of the world's deadliest snipers, has returned home after two months of fighting in Ukraine . 'Sniper Wali' had answered Ukraine President Zelensky's call to foreign fighters to join the fight against the invading Russian forces. Wali, a veteran of the Afghan & Iraq wars, is back in Quebec after he nearly lost his life in Ukraine “several times”, as per local media reports.

The only thing that surprises me is that combat veterans are surprised there’s chaos and desperation in this war. I’m also a combat veteran, and that’s exactly what I expected.

They havent fought in a proper war though. The conflicts they have fought in have always been super one sided in their favour. Their side has tanks, planes, bombs, etc while the enemy has some untrained poorly coordinated villagers with ak47s and makeshift bombs. Easy to be a "legendary" sniper when your opponents are like that.

Putin only respect strength not diplomacy it’s not worth to act all idealistic with him . Practical thing to do is send in nato to stop the war and that will stabilized the world economy as wel. 2 year conflict of this size gonna bring Prices up . The un assemble needs to Vote For intervention in Ukraine. Stop with just sit back and watching as Russia try’s to invade the country if nato had a brain they would know it’s better to fight Russia now then later and letting nuclear black influence you Is losing

As someone who had military experience, did he think it was going to be fun? Seriously. He was going to help an army that was mainly conscripts, not experienced, battle hardened troops. And to be honest, there is a long told story about a war games exercise in Canada, involving the Brits, US, Canada and one other nation. Let's say the Canadian managed to come second last in their own backyard, in an environment that should have suited them. Imagine walking along in the dark smoking a cigarette, in the pitch back.Yep that was the Americans and Canadians........... The truth is that the Ukrainians have more balls but less skill and experience. Imagine a society that is not experienced in warfare - how cool would that be?

A "serious" military? If anything, this war has shown Russia has a 3rd world level military. The Russian command structure is garbage and many of them refuse to fight. It's only been a few months and already more Russian soldiers have died than America soldiers over the past two decades of wars. So in 20 years of war the US has lost less people than Russia has in 4 months in Ukraine. That is a joke military. That is a military pretending to be a military... a paper tiger.

@@justanotherguy7984 Play war? I know Wali perso. He's not a frontline expert, he's a survivalist. With weapon, He's mostly good at long range. Here's what logically happened . Wali came to Ukraine while the Russians were advancing on Kyiv on almost 3 sides. He went there thinking they would suffer a siege. By the time Wali was making his way to Kyiv the expected siege didn't really happen and the fight got quiet around the Capital. Ukraine didn't have any way to provide foreign soldiers yet with equipment for a Push back. You can't expect a sniper to go attack mode on the frontline without Medium range or long range anti-tank weapons. He didn't run back home. He came back home knowing Ukraine cannot provide the help to be helped and his wife was pregnant. Thing is, people believe he was scared. No. He probably liked it and just had a existential crisis. He thought bigger. He knows he needs to be back here because this war will extend eventually. The western help will soon stop. Ukraine will probably be conquered partially or entirely. I heard Wali is back doing his survivalist training and taking care of his family. We'll need him when the enemies will land in North-America. Agreed. Snipers of the WWII era hid in foliage for DAYS on end without moving a muscle in order to assassinate a high profile target. Wali and snipers today have the privilege of having air superiority and the enemies don’t typically have tanks (ie. terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan). Wali went to a real warzone where the odds are actually stacked against him for the first time... and he became a coward. Funny how even soldiers refuse to accept the inevitability of death until they come a little too close to it, and then chicken out. Goes to show, Wali and many of the foreign fighters didn’t go because they felt the plight of Ukraine, they wanted to play ‘solider’ and carry big ass guns... up until they realized they could die. An army is deadliest when they’re willing to die for a cause

What Wali experienced was called “shell shock” in the past and today it is better known as PTSD. It is a correct choice of Wali to have opted out as he will not know what his reaction is going to be under stress conditions in the future. Also such an event is the cause for many to overthink their decisions and to change them if they get the chance. This has though nothing to do with the mission itself and of being disappointed - even if he may say so. That is I rather interpret as an excuse to safe face and to maintain the bravado of being tough in his job. Also that this two guys lost their life’s because of a cigarette they needed smoking. Well that is what addiction does, it switches off the brain. Especially of it not professional soldiers, they will often act on instinct rather than on what is the appropriate behavior in the situation.

The dudes that lost their lives because of the cigarette had absolutely nothing to do with addiction. I think you're forgetting that some of these Ukrainian soldiers aren't actually soldiers at all. They're just regular people who have been drafted, store clerks Farmers etc. They went out for a cigarette because they didn't know any better, they're not trained soldiers and became casualties of a pointless war.
@philippschwartzerdt3431
@philippschwartzerdt3431 Жыл бұрын
@@patman0250 even untrained people have a common sense of survival, addicts tend to compromise their safety to satisfy their urges. You can have trained soldiers behaving this way. These are the first in danger to get shot, very much alike these volunteers. Therefore it doesn’t matter if they are soldiers or just volunteers, as addicts have the tendency to dismiss dangerous situations even when told to be careful many times.

I believe Wali and his friend might be extremely scared to act independently because they fear they might be spotted by night vision goggles, radar surveillance, booby traps, landmines, counter snipers, attack helicopters, jets, cruise missiles, artillery, rockets, drones and many other dangers that Russia and even Ukrainian troops set up all over the place, plus friendly fire from Ukrainians army mistaking them as an enemy sniper, I think Wali was scared shitless, simply put, that battlefield isn't the playground of Afghanistan or Iraq that Wali is use to operating in when he was fighting poor shepherd Taliban fighters and poor ill-equiped insurgents in Iraq.

I suspect the International Legion was announced without too much forethought and planning. The UAF did well to limit volunteers to those with combat experience after the initial invite was to anyone who wanted to go, but it was always going to be difficult integrating the international volunteers, especially those used to NATO standards, supply lines etc. Also, I can only really think of the SCW as a war that attracted international volunteers in this way (though I have seen a monument at Vimy Ridge recording the names of a handful of IVs who died there in WW1), so I suspect the situation would be difficult for most militaries to handle. One can only hope that should the war drag on the use of IVs will improve.

When I was in the Army many years ago, we never had body armour and only wore hemets when parachuting. The reason was weight, especially in hot climates. Such things are OK if yu are in a static position in cool weather,, but when you have to footslog long distances, especially in jungle, they are a handicap. However, we were well supplied with ammunition and food, but the trouble was we often had to carry it for ten days at a time wthout resupply. A helmet weighed as much as 2 days rations, so which would you rather have? Watching your friend's back sounds a bit boring, like watching paint dry.

The trick is: Don’t make yourself an easy target! If you're danger close to a mortar or arty explosion body armor won't help at all and you're SOL anyway! So if your arms and legs are blown off and your torso is intact at the end of the day it doesn't really matter!

Thank you. Even the few comments provide valuable insight into one person's professional opinion. It should not be surprising that Ukraine's volunteer forces and in particular a brigade comprised of soldiers from diverse backgrounds would disagree on strategy and tactics, so that by itself is probably a mistake. It probably would have been better to put together platoons or smaller of fighters with identical or near identical backgrounds. And, there should be a clear chain of command, conscripts should be told to follow the commands of more experienced soldiers or find themselves designated as cannon fodder. As for protective equipment and weapons, I would recommend that every volunteer should be matched up to a supply officer before anything else can happen... Before any assignment, before joining any force. Best but probably not always possible to to be fully equipped and bring what is personally deemed necessary and don't rely on the Ukrainians to provide any essentials. So, for example Wali and Shadow should have been fully equipped from a Western org before arriving in Ukraine (or anywhere else) and maybe even remain in contact after arriving in Ukraine. Ukraine's forces may be largely ad hoc and lack "middle management" but that's to be expected. I'm sure Ukraine was preparing for, but cannot fully be expected to field a fully professional fighting force comparable to most Western nations.

I think you don't understand why the Ukrainian govt officials & any other Ukrainian interviewed PLEADS for ammunition, machinery & body armour & why they asked foreign volunteers to bring bc their own.

Well put. There is a vast difference between not expecting much and being supplied with zero weaponry and even rudimentary clothing. We all get it: American soldiers are spoiled and this is why they are complaining. But the reality is if Zelenskyy had no weapons or supplies or coherent plan to implement them, why, exactly did he issue the call?

They were simply expecting the impossible. Before engaging they should have understood the ground circumstance and not to expect too much. On the other hand the Ukraine side should have been better prepared to provide necessary logistics & communications with the fighters otherwise better not to welcome them.

Yap. What a fool. He needs bullets to shoot. imagine that. One good sniper is worth dozens of regular soldiers. But they do need bullets and need to be in an environment that provides targets. Snipers don't take out tanks FFS.

Dude, it's like none of you Saw the video. All throughout the war, volunteer soldiers have been complaining about Ukrainian distrust. While Russian ordinance has been specifically targeting their barracks, the Ukrainians didn't give them body, armor or even weapons. He went there to fight and they wouldn't let him.

US troops always beat Russians. Just look at Syria? Russian Merc unit WAGNER which hires nothing but ex speztnas was annihilated in Syria by the US. This sniper is used to fighting in a well oil military machine. Ukraine is a desperate fight where nothing is well oiled but the weapons supplied by the West. Russia would lose to any Western nation hands down.

They're fighting for the freedom of blowing their own Donbass compatriots to chunks and when gone, they'll be able to place NATO nuclear launchers directed at major Russian cities with only 5-minute flight time, insufficient for detection and retaliation. Also to keep making parades to celebrate Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera.
