Contrary to the popular belief, no important Western leader or his/her Administration actually expects India to support them against Russia simply because (apart from multiple other important reasons) Russia is crucial to India's survival and no nation, least of all India, will put it's own survival at stake to appease it's foreign friends. As a result the leaders of the Western Powers are onboard with India in this matter. However at the same time, on one hand they have to allow their minions to make some noises re: putting pressure on India for the sake of the desired Optics since (a) they have to maintain that facade in front of their own public whom they are bombarding with war rhetoric & propaganda _vis a vis_ the totally unnecessary & avoidable War unfolding in Europe;- the devastating "Internecine Slav War" which they have imposed on Ukraine & Russia both. And (b) each one of these Democratically elected Leaders have to deal with not only influential war mongers & "ideologically possessed" thugs within their Party & Administration both but also the ambitious as well as the disgruntled lot too. Then, of course, there is the Opposition whose job is to criticise anything and everything the incumbent Rulers do even though they will be doing exactly the same if/when in power. Which brings in those in the Media & Academia who are also obliged to publicly discuss different views, question their Government & demand their leaders must ensure every friendly Nation, in this case India, falls in line. And finally there are powerful Pressure Groups thus inclined too; especially those that are not well disposed towards India - for them it is a golden opportunity to berate India and derail the burgeoning close relationship developing between their Country and India. Whereas on the other hand, India's ties with the West is becoming deeper every passing day. India's stance re: ongoing Ukrain Conflict has done absolutely nothing to impede the pace India's deepening ties with the West. And that too has its valid reasons: consecutive American Presidents, both Republican and Democrat, have articulated "US-India Ties to be the most important partnership of the 21st century" and the Ukrains Conflict is too small an event to have any impact on that. In fact, it is thanks to India's peculiar stance re: Ukraine Conflict that India has also been able to quietly assist the West in number of ways. For example: the abrupt decoupling with Russia while Saudi Arabia refusing to play ball at this crucial juncture was bound to have a severe impact on Europe within the moment as well as for many years to come. But this quiet Govt-to-Govt understanding has allowed India to engage in a mutually beneficial arrangement whereby it has become the biggest Oil & Gas Supplier to Europe; Indian Companies are purchasing Crude from Russia which is refined in India and then sent to Europe. Without this arrangement not only European Economy (Industry) that has finally started to recover, would have had grave consequences but also, even more importantly, the common peple in Europe would have suffered tremendously as well. So doesn't matter how ironical it seems but there is no other sustainable way for Europe to overcome shortage of fuel at this moment of time.
