The Getaway was such an amazing game. I got it for $10 used from EB games many years ago. The subtlety and tension in the combat is epic, but a little too much subtlety in the controls makes it a pain in the ass if you run in thinking it's another GTA. I got shredded so many times in firefights and didn't even learn how to heal properly until the 4th or 5th mission. The real trick in gun fights is to play like a coward. Hug walls, creep up on doorways, sneak up on people from dark corners, and abuse blindfire to keep groups of enemies from advancing. The AI, while still dumb, is relentless and will use tactics to corner or pincer you whenever they can. Also, each weapon has its own common sense strengths and weaknesses like shotguns dominating in corridors, rifles at range and pistols being all around good. Just remember above all that Hammond is just a regular dude, not an action hero. The driving portions are a bit trickier. The indicator can be a inconsistent like giving you a direct route for chases and a roundabout one for point-A-to-point-B ones.Hell, there's times that rule will be entirely switched up getting you even more lost. Also the cars are pretty realistic requiring the emergency break to pull drift turns and the suspension being messed up on impact. Great game if put the time in to get used to the controls. I'm actually surprised it aged so well too.

For those of you who don't know. The intro is a song called Baddest by P-Money and Gappy Ranks. I was listening to this in class one day when my teacher asked what I was listening to. I told her the name and she started laughing because she never expected a kid like me to listen to rap. Well I promised her at my prom a mixtape. I made one for my Grad (which was yesterday.) I handed it to her and told her that the first song was baddest. She laughed and now this song brings back good memories. So thank you Best Friends for giving me this song and the memories that went with them. Spectacular as usual.

So, here's the thing about British protagonists and American protagonists; American protagonists are traditionally cooler than cool. They have clever one-liners, they have the crazy idea that just might work, they're the rebel who ultimately saves everything and they have perfect hair. British protagonists are almost the complete opposite. They're out of shape, they're the only sane person in a room full of idiots, and they're often at the receiving end of every shitty situation. They still win, but it'll be more of a personal sort of victory and less save-the-world kinda thing. We tend to identify more with the quietly under-rated guy than the run-and-gun action hero. There's exceptions of course (James Bond) but in general...
