I'm with Yahtzee on the point he's making, though, because I _did_ start cloak-sprinting like a connect-the-dots puzzle through large parts of _Crysis 3,_ since the game kept emphasizing stealth. I stopped playing when the dialog made plain that I'd hit the halfway point of the story right around when I asked myself, _"When does the story start?"_ I'd assumed that when I was out of the learn-the-ropes part of the game, I wouldn't be encouraged to sprint-pause-sprint through 75-100% of a chapter.

I don't see why they couldn't just have Prophet be a voice in the suit, and keep Alcatraz as the semi-rational glue holding it together (no pun intended). It's better than "Yeah, the suit needed a body so I just got some random I found washed up on a beach and shoved him in there. Not like he had a family or a life of his own. What? Find some way to remove him and give him the honor he deserves for saving humanity? I would just like to say that when fire arms were first invented, bows were significantly more effect; longer range, faster firing rate, better accuracy, and ultimately more likely to kill the person you're trying to kill. Of course, before it was even conceivable to actually mass train soldiers in the use of longbows, they were made obsolete by guns, as you said. It just took too long to teach someone to use a bow.

1. The bow is so powerful because it's integrated into nanosuit's strenght thingy. Psycho explains that before he gives it to you 2. If you want to cloak past enemies and spare them, nothing is stopping you. That's the point - multiple ways to approach objectives

@bladez479
@bladez479 9 жыл бұрын
A bow's power has nothing to do with the string, in fact the string does not stretch whatsoever. The bow's power is given by the elasticity of the limbs, limbs that are harder to bend equate to more power while also making it harder to draw. Therefore it would make sense to have a bow with an extremely heavy draw when you have the strength of an elephant that has been shooting heroin into its scrotum.

The reason that bow is so OP is that it's not just your normal bow. It's so tense that you NEED the nanosuit to take the arrow back of even a nanometer. And if you put tremendous force into that bow, and that it gets transfered into that arrow, it will destroy whatever's in its path

Interestingly enough, most guns didn't become more effective than bows until near the end of the nineteenth century. The reason they replaced them was because they were easier to use and didn't require years of training. To use a medieval longbow required regular practice from childhood. You could train some to fire a musket in a few hours.

Why give the player an archaic bow when older games have done it just as well but stayed in theme? Half-Life 2 had a jury-rigged crossbow that literally shot super-heated rebar at the enemy. It behaved, for all intents and purposes, like a bow and arrow... but without betraying the futuristic-junkpile setting of the game. In fact, it was pretty awesome. Putting an ancient or even "year 2014 modernized" bow into a futuristic game just screams "designed by committee" or "we're just doing what's popular, please don't judge us by our actions". There's a lot you can get away with in a story if you just put a modicum of effort into it. Hell, I could justify putting a slingshot into a futuristic game if it were themed and explained properly. "Oh dear, I have all these impact-sensitive anti-matter pellets and no way to fling them long distances because the gun that fired them is broken. But maybe I could jury-rig some ridiculous-but-endearing shamble of a weapon to fire them?". Could be an amusing aside in an otherwise serious story, have fun with it. And even it that's a terrible plot device, it's better than "we're a super-armed future military force and we use bows because reasons". But not even that level of effort was placed into many of the futuristic games I've played lately. Why is Turok choosing to fire arrows at dinosaurs and armored soldiers? I don't understand why a high-velocity armor-penetrating bullet couldn't do the job better... and don't give me that stealth crap, silencers were invented long before any of us were born and they're kind of in use for a damn good reason. :) In summary, if your video game player wants something to die, give him a weapon that looks like it could do the job. If you deliberately hand him a weapon that is thematically out of place or underpowered, tie that into the game in a sane and thoughtful way. Listening game devs? No? *sigh* Well it felt good to rant to myself in public, anyway. I'm going to be a lot of fun when I go senile, if by "fun" we all agree I mean "eyed suspiciously and finally locked away".
@zacharybowler28
@zacharybowler28 10 жыл бұрын
Totally agree if you can make it fit in in some way an "archaic" weapon can totally add to a game. Although I will say that if a game had me come out of some type of cell, and I had "anti-matter pebbles" to throw/shoot at someone that would be all kinds of funny, especially if you did make a slingshot to shoot them even if only until you got a better weapon. Maybe make them destroy everything in a radius including the guards weapons?
@Tuberuser187
@Tuberuser187 10 жыл бұрын
They kinda do explain it the same way as HL2, the bow is made from modern materials and can change the tips to specialised incendiary or explosive ones instantly and it only works with the nanosuit because the draw weight is far higher than a human could pull.
@danielhale1
@danielhale1 10 жыл бұрын
Tuberuser187 Yea, but it still doesn't explain why you would use even an advanced bow over equally advanced guns. A bow is still more awkward to use and less potent than a silenced sniper rifle that fires high-velocity depleted uranium death (or something futuristically appropriate). You need a good reason why the step backward into more primitive is a good idea. In HL2's case, several of your weapons are often jury-rigged from other equipment as it is, out of necessity (making it very thematically fitting). Further, the ability to use a common material like rebar as ammo makes the crossbow a very valuable tool in such an environment. Weapons like the combine's rifle can certainly out-perform the crossbow, but you have to find ammo for them and that's not always plentiful. In a game like Crysis where foes supposedly have advanced armor or shields designed to deflect bullets more effectively, you could reason that the lower velocity of an arrow or its unique materials & structure let it more easily bypass that protection (which only activates at bullet speeds or in response to certain materials). But someone may have to call me out on that -- it may not be an excellent reason. And game designers often screw up this reasoning when they apply it blindly, like to unarmored foes. For example, the unarmored, unshielded bear in the woods absorbs bullets like a pincushion just as well as the aliens/soldiers, but the arrow that's supposed to be selectively useful against shielded foes kills the bear in one shot. ;) You have to follow through with your excuses, or they become just that.
@Tuberuser187
@Tuberuser187 10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Hale The thing is at medium ranges the bow in Crysis 3 bow with the draw weight of the predator bow would probably be as effective as a marksman rifle with all the advantages of its easily changed specialised ammo. A skilled bowman can fire 20 rounds per minute, not all the different to a modern sniper at around one round every 3 seconds and the wearer of a Nanosuit wouldn't tire from it. The bow would have a much greater overall kinetic impact because of the projectiles weight, you are really under estimating the effectiveness of a bow in general. Given some practice (well okay a lot of practice) and a good modern average bow a person could be as lethal with it as many firearms, no they are not fully automatic but spraying bullets is ineffective so the shooter of a firearm would take time to aim shots anyway. There is a real reason Longbows where considered to the machine guns of their day, modern compound and recurve bows retain much of the power of those bows but are smaller.
@danielhale1
@danielhale1 10 жыл бұрын
Tuberuser187: The problem being that even at medium ranges, a bow lacks the precision of a sniper rifle, nevermind discussions of impact and penetration (and I'm still dubious about even a high-performance bow playing that role, but I don't have the training needed in these things to be certain). Bows were displaced by guns in real wars for a reason. Hunters use bows on occasion for the sport or experience (and because deer make a less dangerous opponent than enemy militants), but you won't take one out onto the battlefield in real life. At least, I've yet to see a serious marine choose to take down an opponent with a bow -- it only ever happens in movies and games, for the image more than the pragmatism. A semi-automatic rifle with iron sights (no scope) is likely to be at least as accurate, and against armored targets, a rifle designed for anti-armor or anti-tank is a more reliable choice than trying to wield a bow. Trying to make a bow with a high draw strength compete with a metal bullet propelled by explosives may be a lost cause, even assuming the human has the powered armor to help him draw it back. And simple explosion-propelled metal bullets are old tech -- you can go further with guns even with existing technology. You might build & use a rudimentary bow if you had no other equipment (lost everything, need to build from what you have), I can see that. But you'd discard or shelve it as soon as you had firearms available again. And spending cash on a state-of-the-art bow vs an equally expensive rifle seems like a starry-eyed choice. Bows are awesome and they invoke some useful responses from an audience playing a game or watching a movie. But they're not the practical choice for a military, even a crysis suit warrior with incredible strength. At that point, just give him a heavy machinegun with explosive or penetrating rounds, followed by "good luck, have fun". Relatively minimal investment into existing tech outclasses even futuristic bows.

the thing is, fallout 3 had something which was an aberrtion for many, me included: level scaling. Seeing an unarmored lvl2 character take out 2 brotherhood paladins in full armour was painful. But that did let everyone go around withou fear of facing an overly strong oponent for their level It's true that the beginning was more linear, but it helped understand the region's situation much more. It also imo, made discovering New Vegas feel more rewarding than finding it in 1 hour

I don't get the obsession with bows in games, at least Farcry 3 and Tomb Raider had the protagonist using it because of their situation and for hunting, but it makes no sense here. They're not as silent as the claim is, the impact alone is fucking loud. Then add on the super strength prophet has to fire the bows at a high draw weight, and it's not ideal for stealth, plus they'd need material that can withstand the force without shattering the bow on firing with prophet's strength. Farcry 3 at least required you to check for arrow drop and measure distance, and it wasn't insta kill

You CAN fire a bow from cover. Also, if both weapons are in the same condition (eg: the gun is cocked/safety off roughly equals an arrow ready to be fired) [or you have to cock/torn off safety, while I have to load an arrow, in which case I might actually get to shooting faster] Also, depending on the strength of the bow, you can fire pretty rapidly. And if we start talking about advantages of each weapon (like how guns can fire '6000' bullets), bows can be accurate while you're in motion.)

You're kind of wrong on that one Yahtzee, due to the fact that the arrows have more mass they usually get more penetration power (insert snarky remark here) than a bullet would when going to through the flesh, bones and even clothes of a man. Of course that guns do get more range and speed and it can be fired multiple times, but as you mentioned early, they are silent and you can retrieve the arrows. btw, some modern bows and arrows can penetrate kevlar quite easily, and others, though they don't penetrate the kevlar, have so much impact that it would essentially hammer its way through the body of the poor sap leaving a crater and crushing bones.

Yes, and it's the same for bullets (minus the whole greater mass thing) but there are specially designed bullets the can hammer an opponents armored anything so hard that they sometimes wish they would've been hit by an explosive. Then there are Bullets that can pierce through an inch (or more) of steel and wiring. A.K.A. a tank. So again, I wonder how the Bow and arrow were replaced by some of the most advanced weaponry we've ever made?

that's true, but i was referring to the current ages and not so much on the time period of this game, because in the time period of the game there is only 2 things going its way, and that is stealth and ammo recoverability. I mean, in the time set of this game there's a gun with ten barrels that fires 500 rounds per second... Fuck stealth! :P

KRIMZONMEKANISM I was referring to modern times, but the way they show the "military" weaponry is actually quite realistic by the time period in the game we're supposed to be able to use laser based weaponry and gauss rifles, witch some of the soldiers in the game have already, but the way the AI thinks and reacts basically makes them seem like robots. So like you said. Fuck stealth. XD

If great mass alone would be the deciding factor in penetration, baseballs would be very deadly indeed. Arrows have certain things going for them, but if you take a set of comparable examples (recurve bows vs lower caliber Pistols/SMGs, Compound bows for the higher caliber auto/semi-automatic rifles - not even touching on large caliber rifles) with comparable ammunition (granted, the variety of guns and ammo to choose from is bigger in the firearm department, but there are several popular arrow tips), bullets will pretty much always emerge victorious - to the point where you would have to resort to "but if these conditions are met..." scenarios to find one where they don't. I'm an archer myself, not at all into firearms, but yeah - they're a lot better at killing and causing general mayhem.

Does anyone else think the stealth in this game is shit? I mean you have to be cloaked at all times to not be seen. If I'm in a bush, it's dark and the enemy is 30 feet away from me he shouldn't see me cloaked or not. Even in daylight, they see you from 500 meters away even if you're in a bush and sometimes even behind cover that only shows like your feet or something

The enemy actually has really bad distance focusing if they haven't been alerted. Which is just as well, since every single "tactical objective arena" starts you out on a ledge in broad daylight about 45 yards from two enemy patrol lines

Ahem. Painkiller "Murdering tons of dude for no reason is fun! Who cares about story" Crysis 3: "Why would I want to murder tons of dudes? Obviously I need story to give context" Got your wires crossed a bit there.
@AlwaysANemesis
@AlwaysANemesis 9 жыл бұрын
There's a considerable difference in the two games: Painkiller, to its credit, _didn't_ need a complex story: you're a guy tasked with killing demons. Not much more to elaborate. And since the gameplay was so ridiculously over-the-top and psychotic fun, reminiscent of doom, the lack of context where it's not even needed can be forgiven. Plus, it never truly had a sequential predecessor, so it was, to whatever degree, a new IP But in a game as complex as Crysis 3 is, you need to understand it's taking a *lot* of cues from Crysis 2, so there's a level of expectation. Also, keep in mind this is an era of games where story and gameplay are a general hand-in-hand couple: the context complements the narrative. But when a game that _demands_ there be an elaborate story lacks the context, then there's your first big flaw there.

Here, I think I can explain: In Crysis 3, Yahtzee says he doesn't see any reason to kill enemies that he does not perceive to be a threat or an obstacle. He actually says this in the review. In Painkiller, Yahtzee does perceive the enemies to be threats and obstacles
@Dice12K
@Dice12K 9 жыл бұрын
Here's a good question: Have you ever tried to walk/run through the demons in Painkiller without shooting/killing them? Early on, you'll be mostly fine; maybe a scrape or two. Later on, you're not reaching the other end without dying. Point: The demons in Painkiller ARE a threat and you're going to die if you don't shoot them. Meanwhile, Crysis 3's enemies can be cloaked passed and they aren't a threat with that. The context of the story can lie in that alone. Yeah, I'll note on how you can't actually continue the level in Painkiller until you kill the demons. Lastly, Painkiller does have a story that is rather ignored for a few reasons. You're in purgatory and after 30 years from the time you arrived, you are STILL alive and you get the chance to redeem yourself by going on a quest of stopping/killing Lucifer and his army from hell. Completing this quest will grant you the freedom to go and join your wife in heaven. If you're wondering: "Stop the demons from doing what?" Taking over Purgatory. "Why does that matter?" It matters because they'll prevent anyone from ever getting to go to heaven if they need redeeming. How does that work? Getting "killed" by a demon in Purgatory -> your souls goes to hell. When the demons take over Purgatory you'll never have a chance to redeem yourself to get to go to heaven because you'll be killed by the countless demons and go to hell. That's quite a bit of story-based context on why you would want to kill the enemies before you. It works quite well even without that much knowledge on the subject because if you only watch the game's opening that is around 5 minutes, you'll receive enough context to want to kill them all.

Studying in a university that specializes in nanotech studies. In game they say the arrow is made out of carbon nanofiber, which is pretty much the strongest material we know. It is both extremely elastic, letting it deform slightly then come back to its shape instead of breaking, and yet the force needed to deform it is still gigantic. It could easily withstand "rhino stoping" cinetic energy, a 30g bolt at 100 is suited for deer hunting (xbow). That bow could be made, but no human could use it.

I think you missed the 'difficulty of use' part. Also, the result would be the same, if we both got hit by the projectiles. Around the same area. Also, having an arrow sticking through any of your limbs will completely disable it (unless you're some invincible super-human called Mr. Big Doesntexist), while bulets usually pass through (unless they hit bone) making movement, while not painless, possible.

well, since the nano suit gives the wearer super human strength, you could design a bow that utilizes the suits physical power to fire an arrow with more force then a gun of comparable size and weight would be capable of. plus you can fire it from stealth.

I mean honestly, I really enjoyed Ceysis 3. I played it when I was like 9, great parenting, so I do understand if my opinion is a bit bias, but I had a lot of fun with it. I really likes the multiplayer too, especially the game mode that was sorta like hide and seek where there's one guy in power armor and the others are just "call of duty enemy" soilders. There was one map with a boat and everyone just jumped underwater because you could swim faer than the power suit. But it was fun and felt like community- but it was Xbox 369 and those where the good days I guess.

I would like to see Yahtzee review Antichamber as the main theme of the game is to do something counterintuitive. While simultaneously it is reminiscent of portal in that it involves alot of puzzles. I'm not sure whether he wouuld get stuck midway through and rage about it being difficult or find it incredibly fun and innovative. though It is a relatively small game and in the midst of the things hes reviewing right now It's bound to get overlooked.
