Just out of High School I lost a girlfriend over my C-3. One of her complaints was that I spent more time and money on the car. As she walked out the door, I had all freshly chromed parts spread out on my fire place seating area, she picked up my brand new "Stingray" emblems and broke them between the Sting and Ray. I still have a broken "Sting" 40+ years later. I had to accept that she was right.

Yes I read “All corvettes are red” before I bought my 99 Hardtop last year. Awesome book, GM almost killed off the Corvette due to lack of funds. As Lyle said they put a lot of money into the drivetrain and they definitely skimped on the interior quality. I love the interior layout especially the dashboard, dials and everything analog. Especially my 99 Hardtop which has manual hvac controls.

I’ve owned my C5 Coupe now for nearly 3 years, it’s my dream car. I’m 6'4" & it fits so much so that when on the cruise control I can stretch out with my feet under the pedals & still not touch the end. It’s fast, handles like it’s on rails (Z51) does more to the gallon than my VW T3 (Vanagon) camper. It turns heads just with the sound at first & here in Scotland 🏴so so rare. Can’t wait until it’s back on the road in the spring. It’s a long winter😏

Having owned most of the corvettes made,my assertion is it is the best one ever built. They are literally hard as iron. The interior in my 2001 Z06 was heavily panned but at 140k miles it still looks and smells new with minor wear on the drivers seat. No corvette made before that would look like this after 25k miles. They really got the C5 right.

I had an older friend sell me his original owner 04 z06 after he decided the car was too much for him at his age. With 66k on the clock the car is fresh. I enjoy it more than my C7 Z06. My wife now drives the c7 as her toy and I get a 100% pure driver's car that is free of things that add nothing to the performance factor.

This is how I feel. IMO the C5Z is easily the best 'Drivers" Corvette ever made. Each year they got more refined and lose just a little bit of the rawness that the C5Z has in its DNA. Two of my buddies have C6Z's and when they drive my C5Z they always tell me, "Man, that car just hits different". I know stock a C6Z is a bit faster but its not always about that.

Great video Lyle. yes, I love the lines of my 2003 Z06 and it has just enough of a nose lower rake with the body lines flowing upwards as if flows to the back. Giving me what we did in the 60's and 70's Hot Rod Muscle Car look. The interior is perfect for me and the HUD is marvelous. I don't need all the new screens, push button start etc. etc. stuff with my car. I do have Blue Tooth installed and a garage door opener (button) but they are hidden in the ashtray in front of the shifter. Speaking of shifter it may not be my old school muscle car 4 speed but do I love to run thru the 6 gears I have now. What my wife loves about our 2nd C5 is that she can actually get into it so mucher easier than any of my 2 C4's or 2 C3's. And it's more comfortable to her. She is also glad the seats are tall enough to catch her head when I give it a little gas. lol. My Corvettes, all of them that I have owned have been daily driver's. Yes, rain, snow but not too much as I draw the line on anything above 1-2 inches, bottom feeder. Being from San Francisco and now in Portland, Oregon I drive in any weather and long or short trips. Oh, lastly how cool is it that we see our dash light up with a Black Light? I totally agree with you on why we love our C5's. I say- Drive. Smile. wave. It's a beautiful day to drive your Vette.

An excellent video! I’ve owned my 2001 C5 roadster for 20 years, and driving it never fails to make me smile. Oh, you’ll cry when it is time to change the tires, but if you’re not tracking the car, or drifting around corners, and are not a fan of side-stepping the clutch at 3000 rpm (not that there is anything wrong with any of these, if you like to do these), the tires will last a surprisingly long time. I live in the frozen Northeast and have to store the car for 6 months a year. I put a trickle charger on it, and as Lyle says, when April or May rolls around, I get in the car, turn the key, and drive off. Just a great cruiser. A superb and fun car. sweet spot is right. As a C5 owner, I could listen to this stuff all day long. As a guy who came of age driving English sports cars, I was looking at the platform , would I be happy putting money long term into the design, and of course, it had to fit my body comfortably. I was taken aback to discover the car was built primarily for american style fun, with the added benefit that GM knows the american consumer tends to abuse machines, so a good owner will have a regular yank tank.. A major enjoyment for me is that the top goes down flush with no sight obstructions. I find this openness, besides the obvious benefits, has the unexpected advantage of drawing friendly interactions with pedestrians and other drivers , something that doesn't happen surround by bodywork or wearing a helmet. the stock design is more than sufficient for my needs, with the benefit of less stewardship and money required.

I bought my C6 about 12 years ago and currently have 135k on it here in the northeast. I also have 2 other cars, but the C6 is my daily for the most part and has been extremely reliable. The aftermarket is huge, and parts are relatively cheap for the levels of performance you get. A new c8 has been tempting, but there is nothing better than owning a car that you owe nothing on and can still outperform 99% of what's on the road 👍

I really enjoyed my C3, and my C4. But my 2001 C5 is so much better (for me). An absolute joy to own and drive ... and simply look at. Great video, Lyle. 👍

I just need the prices on a 2002-2004 Z06 to keep declining until April. That’s when I’ll have enough money to buy one if I can find a decent example.

Recently picked up a ‘01 at auction with 35k for just 13.6k! All my friends can’t believe the condition it’s in for a 23 year old car (only 3 months older than me! 😅) She’s a blast to drive around and I can’t wait till spring!

Fully agree with everything stated in this video. I went with a C6 but man I did give the C5 a hard look. In fact there was a cool stock yellow Z06 I was tempted on but it was a bit to far away from where I live... about a week later a clean 2013 GS was only 4 hours away and I just jumped on it as I was ready to buy and start enjoying these wonderful cars. C5 though, mad contender with plenty of after market support with the perk of pop up headlights.

I have a 2002 convertible and I really like this car. I had a 1996 Collectors Edition Coupe 6-pd, which was a really, really nice car. The C5 is as Lyle says - reliable and so much more! I have an electrical problem with the door locks, not a really big deal; power door locks in a 2-door? I should have the problem fixed. Lyle - do know a good shop in the Chicagoland area?

An interesting video Lyle, and I can't argue with anything you said! But, a lot of your good point also translate to the C6 - with the exception of styling and I guess that's when things become subjective. I've driven thousands of miles in a c5 amd loved it, the same in a C6. Bit for me, owning a 1978, the C6 has a look that I prefer, probably for the reasons you're not so keen!😄 That's what makes the Corvette hobby so great, we have our favourites, but they are all Corvettes!

Just bought a 2002 Z. Realized how much fun they are to drive. I had a C7 Z but this one is more fun!

I have a 50th Anniversary convertible. When I drive with the top down, I get so many waves, thumbs up, and compliments on what a great looking car it is. It’s simply a fantastic car, and the fact that GM almost killed it makes it even more of a success story.

Great video, i agree with all of your reasons. Love my 99 Hardtop which i bought last year in April and you helped greatly with all of your email responses. Need to get rid of these runflats that the previous owner put on, will do it next spring/summer, for now i turn up the music! they're super loud especially on concrete roadways. only major complaint is in the interior: the base seats in the Hardtop are shit to put it bluntly. ZERO lateral support. With only about 24k miles on it, she's barely broken in. Saving up for a C7 Z51 2LT with mag ride. I’ll have this C5 paid off in 3 years then time to make a move into a C7. No disrespect to the C5 community but the C7 is the ultimate front engine RWD Vette.

Almost everytime i go anywhere people always ask what year it is and compliment my 2000 Arctic White 6spd base. Surprisingly, it's many of the younger generations who really like it. Ive owned many Corvettes, C1,C2,C3,C4,and C5. I currently own a 75 coupe, an 87 Convertible, and my 2000. By far my favorite of all to work on is the C4 platform but none can match the durability and reliability of a C5. I daily drive mine(145K) and beat the crap out of it daily. It always does what i need it to do. After 24 years it still outperforms 90% of anything on the road today in all aspects. Its arguably, the last sexy Corvette design.

I love everything about the C5 except for the looks of the car and the interior! Probably the worst seats out of any generation corvette! But drive train and suspension!!!!..... chefs kiss!!!

About 8 years ago I sold my 04 Lemans Zo6 (one of the 2025} because I wanted a convertable, I bought a yellow 02 convertable instead liveing here in Fl, no regrets but I should have kept the Zo6 as well. When the garage door is open and the rear end is on view, I get lots of guys knocking on my door to see if it is for sale. I tell them no, im 81 and will get buried in it.

I knew you were big but I didn't know you're pushing 7 feet! I'm 6'8" and find myself bonking my head at times in my '04. I don't understand how you can fit at all. You're also a lot broader than I am.

Thanks for doing this. Have you ever compared the 5 to the 6. I personally like the 6 better but not the headlights. Thanks for keeping us informed

I agree with the C5 having a timeless design that looks clean & not dated. I owned one for 9 1/2 years. But I give the widebody C6 an edge on great looks. I on,y updated to a 2013 Grand Sport for that reason.
