Quick question: I was earlier trying to get my skybox working, and when I finally got it to work, the water became invisible. It's there, but you can't see it. Any idea on why this is happening?

I fixed it with a cubemap, but now my map "blanks out" in certain areas, like if I were to walk from point A to point B on the opposite side of the map, my player would freeze, and my surroundings turn black.. oh, and some of the prop_static models I made that were previously appearing are now not. Any idea on what's going on?

Er, now the water is black with little/no reflections. Is this an issue with the skybox or the lighting, or the water texture? I've tried messing around with some stuff.

There is refracting water textures you can get that don't show in game like crap. Looks sooo cool, everything underwater becomes wavy and stuff.

@PrincePhoenixThe1st all water textures are automatically swimable, to walk on water you need something like nodraw above in the water to prevent you from slipping through

@Sazeik trigger texture tied to func_smokevolume , change the colour, put the block below the water where you want it. It is expensive to render.

Yes, I've made water before, in nearly all my maps, and I always type that in to check the map, after adding a cubemap.

it's because the hl2 devs made "wasteland" refer to the levels that took place on the seaside. So yeah, ocean water looks fresh, and there you go.. ;)

Elevators and trains tut for the first question. As for the second one, just make a trigger_once brush where your person should first get on the island or whatever and use Philip's trigger_hurt tutorial to cover the 'playing field'. Set it so it isn't active until someone steps over the trigger_once brush. I/O gets really easy when you think two seconds about it.

@3kliksphilip I fixed the problem, there were a additional stupid env_light outside of the map. After I delete it, the water is fixed. >_<

@GiveMeBass93 Tick the little box at the bottom of the compile-settings window (when you press F9) which says; "Don't run the game after compiling". Making Hammer initialize the game load is buggy, and should be avoided. Hope this helps.

I think that's a problem with your cubemaps, put an env_cubemap somewhere in your level and compile it, then type buildcubemaps in the console when you load your map, then reload it and it should be fixed.

@3kliksphilip The CSS update screwed up all the textures. It changed them a lot. They look a lot different. You may have to update this video.

Nice work, although I would have liked just another second on each water type. But what I'd really like is some old style water. It's too problematic to have to filter through 3 dozen water textures to make sure you have one that you can see through, then its something else to have to go into each one and check if the "fog" in the water allows you to see more than 5 feet in front of you. Valve needs fog-less water in source, and hopefully wave height control, even if just a little.

You could just parent a block with a water texture and a trigger_hurt to a func_tracktrain moving up...

@3kliksphilip It's not too deep. I've found that it's a custom texture. Im gonna try to do some similar. I hope to compress good custom textures, last time I did that, my server crashes when I put the map xD. Thanks a lot for all and sorry for any inconvenience =)

Has anyone else had a problem where underwater displacements have rendering problems? It happens all the time to me where a terrain surface will flash in and out of rendering if underwater.

When I apply it (I am an experienced mapper) to the surface face of the block, it shows that black and pink checkaerboard, and it shows that even on the preview in the texture browser.

water_wasteland002a or water_canals03 look pretty nice. But I don't know the intense of the water-fog. I would create a material by myself for a swimming pool. But nice video, though. Never seen every material rendered in one video. Good job!

@3kliksphilip I used to have a custom water texture and it has stuffed up because of the update. The water has turned all clear and different. But yeah what water texture would you recommend for a Olympic Swimming Pool with blue lighting inside the pool?

Why would you use a water_beneath texture on the surface? They aren't meant for that, they're for the obverse side of the texture with the same name.

Hmmm, was wondering, what is the absolute clearest water material. I kinda don't want to try making the vmf for it, basically looking for something that has no fog while underwater, and you can see from the top at least 50 feet down.

You didn't include how water works in the 3D skybox though. I'm sure it works the same way, but no matter how many times I rewatch the video, or adjust the water in Hammer, it doesn't show up and it doesn't make sense.

@3kliksphilip Hmm ok, I hadn't understood the "reflect" at SDK Source so.. I thought it was like UDK or something, where u can specify the reflect in the material. Thanks a lot ^^ Good luck

wow, same person, same day... When I put water in my map, the surface is black... or a very dark brown... or a very dark blue... What is going on? I've tried everything I know! (which isn't much). Help would be appreciated... Oh don't forget my other question below this one ;)

I'm working on a team fortress 2 level map, and I still can't get ANY of those water texture display ingame. I have changed the object properties from func_detail to func_water and func_water_analog and NONE of them worked AT all! I'm serious frustrated at the moment that I can't get a simple water added to my level.

Why not just make a semi-large map and put holes in it, then put every type of water in it with lighting? Would be much easier in my opinion...

One good thing wiv source...water looks like water, it has that water feel to it, Valve seem to realise that water ISN'T BLUE ALL THE TIME!!! (talking to u, ubisoft!) It is claer, colourless or just mirrors what it reflects of what is beneath it...unlike in AC2, awesome game, but the water in Venice was a superficial blue ALL THE TIME! ROCK ON, SOURCE Oh, and good video btw, as i said before: "DAMN, THAT IS A LOT OF WATER!"

The only way I can get my water to show up above the surface, is to Ctrl+T the water to a func_water_analog, but then the surface barely moves and doesn't splash when I shoot it. I don't see any errors in my compile and I have zero leaks. The only thing in my compile I'm concerned with is "***need to set $abovewater for material (texture path)" Pleease help me!!! My map has water and I want to get it right!

Hi 3kliksphilip, long time fan here, I'm making a CSS island map and my computer's having trouble processing all these displacements. When you make maps with big displacements, do you start by creating a big displacement grid, or make a few rough blocks and then displace those bit by bit?

There are some maps that have water that has clearly had it colour changed, how do you do that? Example: ba_jail_space... the pool room has almost bright blue water, but it is not being lit from below. But when you go into the water, it apears just like any other. Is there a way to change the colour? (its far brighter then say water_canals03)
