NEVER shut off the fuel and run dry to stop a diesel engine! You are causing damage to the injector, cavitation in the high pressure fuel pump and on down. A diesel needs to be fully primed with fuel at all times. Bubbles of air in the lines between pump and injector can act like a spring and prevent the injector break pressure to be achieved. No fuel to cylinder. Crank all you want. Learn to crack loose the injector line at the injector to let air come out and show when fuel shows up, then torque the line nut back to spec. Just like bleeding hydraulic brakes. Hold the compression release continuously whenever you are just trying to get fuel to the injector. BTW, a handstart on this and the smaller 6 HP Yanmar clones are purely cosmetic in nature unless fhe engine is already warm. Electric start is absolutely necessary IMO.
@Rudofaux5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. This is basic knowledge but, it is surprisingly unknown to a vast number of people. As for the pull start. From my experience it is for emergency starting. Usually an engine is already mounted so you won't lose the kinetic energy to start from the engine bouncing around on you. But yeah, starter + battery > pull cord + frustration.
@lickablestinkage77836 ай бұрын
the 2 seconds it runs without fuel probably isnt going to hurt it. Plus when you shut off the fuel, air dosent get into the lines, the fuel just stops flowing and remains stationary, no air bubbles form. Also its excactly how all large diesel engine shut off (cummins, powerstroke, etc) is by stopping the fuel flow.

I know you have more videos on this and that this is from 6+ years ago.... but for anyone else who is wondering, yes, this is set up for fixed RPM/generator use, but you can swap the throttle control mechanism out for the more standard throttle control with the hand wheel that lets you set the throttle in different positions. The thing you say is "some kind of idle solenoid" is just the governor setting bolt. The lever you have tied back with steel wire should have a latch which latches on when you push it all the way (run position), and then the other lever that you push down releases the latch (stop position). If you get a pair of pliers/channel locks, you can work that black cover off the governor setting bolt, then at least on the one I have, there is a threaded rubber cylinder that you can unscrew, then there are two nuts which you can loosen and then you can turn the whole bolt to set the engine speed. Use a laser or mechanical tachometer or just do it by sound (reflective tape wouldn't stick outside in the cold, lol), then tighten the two nuts, put the rubber thing back on, push the metal cover back over it, and then the engine will always run at that speed when you push the throttle latch in. The engine I purchased had come from a generator and I repurposed it for a wood chipper so I don't care that it's fixed RPM since that's basically what I want anyway, but you can find parts for these engines pretty cheap on ebay or even AliExpress if you want to put the typical throttle control back on it. But I have a feeling you solved this issue years ago either way, just sharing what I discovered in the past couple weeks with anyone else who is in a similar situation.

Diesels are run at the factory and to prevent air bubbles in the line, the compression nut at the cylinder / injector is loosened to bleed the air out. Once the engine is started, that nut needs to be tightened. Then it will stop leaking, and will idle, and...this guy doesn't have a clue. "Probably" nothing wrong with the engine. Back in the 60's people that didn't know any better referred to Japanese products the same way and assumed they were junk. All countries make some junk. Ours too.
