Field test and review of Cudeman's MT1 Bushcraft Camping and Survival knife. I field test this hardcore bushcraft and camping knife from Cudeman, the MT1, which comes with a lifetime guarantee and that says it all about the quality build of this knife.
Cudeman use a proprietary steel known as MOVA with a high Mo content but this is not a maraging steel as such as it also contains in the alloy P, Mn and Si to maintain and increase the steel hardness. The carbon content is 0.59 and it is hardened to 55HRC.
To be honest I was really amazed at the edge holding capacity of the MT1. It was great and no doubt due to this high performance steel alloy of Cudeman's.
At 5mm thick and with a razor sharp edge, and nice pointy tip, this is a perfect companion for short or long duration trips into the wilderness or outback. Good for food prepping, fire prepping and fishing and can be used for skinning although not ideal as it is not a hunting knife per se. The only thing I felt was that it was a bit heavy and probably could just as well stand up to a beating at around 4mm instead of 5mm spine thickness.
The MT-1 has a flat grind.
This knife comes with a great horizontally mounted scabbard for easy one handed access. The scabbard fits a standard tactical belt such as a 5.11 TDU59551 which I am wearing in this video.
Enjoy.

Hi, I have the Cudeman MT-1 for the last 4-5 years using it day in and day out taking it all around the globe and let me say it have proved it purpose. From the extreme heat of the Desert Sahara to the chilling cold of Iceland I have used it for batoning, making fire, hunting, skinning, wood craft and many others and still keeps as new. Good description for the MT-1 and I'll suggest you the Cudeman Spartan, for me now it’s the only knife brand I use, I have the MT-1, MT-2, JJ SK1, 148, Spartan and looking to buy the Boina Verde. Allow me to suggest the Cudeman 148 for bushcraft with Scandinavian blade Iand enjoy your MT-1 mate! ;)

Hi, yes this knife really surprised me on how sharp it stayed as I really hammered it and you only see part of what I put it through on this short video. I'm going to reviewing some more of Cudeman's knives soon and one will be the JJ SK1, a knife that I reckon has so many good attributes for a general all-rounder knife (if there is such a thing LOL) The BV was a nice knife to use and a very comfortable handle as well, something lacking in a lot of big knives out there.

Hi, In name of Cudeman Spain and UK we are truly grateful for this incredible review of the MT1 (295k). You have done the perfect and correct way of reviewing a knife, given it some extreme abuse and proven the quality of our products. once again Thank you

I have been using the Cudeman MT1 daily for the last six months after huge disappointment using a Bear Grylls 'Ultimate' knife which didn't really cut it (excuse the pun). What I really like about the MT1, as you point out, is the blade retention and the fact it feels solid and very, very well made. Your review is bang on the mark and as a result I now know I can give it a rough time without fear of pushing the blade strength to it's breaking point. Thanks for the great video review - awesome job!

Hi Thanks for your comments. Yes, certainly the MT-1 really held that edge. Of course you only see a fraction of what I did to this knife in the video otherwise you'd be watching me for several days LOL! Might get a bit boring!

Oh yeah just wanted to add that unfortunately the BG Ultimate knife has so much marketing hype,selling a "life style" rather than the quality of the blade. Once upon a time Gerber when it was a US company made really great outdoor knives but I'm talking over 30 years ago, ask anyone who owns a Gerber Magnum for instance.

Hi there to you in Greece, a lovely country I have been only very very briefly unfortunately. Thank you for your kind comments re my videos and I am glad you enjoy them and it makes me feel I am doing something worthwhile here on KZbin! Regarding the MT-2, I had not planned anything with this knife essentially the bigger brother of the MT-1. I can speak to Cudeman and see what they say.

+thibaut barthelemy HI can't say I have. I used on some of those models simple ceramic rods, In no time the blades were razor sharp.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 8 жыл бұрын
+thibaut barthelemy One thing I forgot to say there is apparently MoVa being produced in Spain and imported stuff from China, maybe it depends on the differences in percentages of elements and how the manufacturer is hardening and tempering the blades

id believe your corrosion comments at 0:55 if you werent showing an image of the blade with what appear to be rust spots.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 10 жыл бұрын
Hi, that's not corrosion, it was some oxide material from when i was striking a fire steel earlier on. I couldn't rub it off properly as I was in the field. One of the disadvantages of using your knife to strike a ferocerium rod you get crap all over the knife.

kindly the knife sheath is ambidextrous? Thanks!
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 5 жыл бұрын
Hi it can be carried on the left side of the belt horizontally or vertically, released via right hand, or vertically on the righthand side BUT the knife can not be turned around in the scabbard, so it isn't really ambidextrous in that sense I believe.

The MOVA and how they treat it is a great steel and I have no problems with it at all.

Bush Camping Tools but according to you this Mova Cudeman is better or worse than the 440c of Veauvius Blackfox?
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure the word "better" is a good choice. I think the handle of the Cudeman is more comfortable however, (in my hands) the M1 from Cudeman is a very heavy knife and comparing this to the black Fox knife, it makes a difference. 440C was and still is a great knife steel, regardless of what any manufacturers would have you believe or what any "experts" on knife forums say. it has great resistance to corrosion and can hold a good edge. It is however a bit harder to sharpen than the MOVA.

So what would be your choice for a journey into nature between these two knives?
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 6 жыл бұрын
I think it you are not on a hunting trip, then I'd go for the Cudeman and also if you didn't expect very wet weather. The Cudeman M1 has a lovely leather scabbard but in my experience leather can start to go mouldy if wet for some days. Of course you could carry the knife in a pack if it really rained a lot. The Black Fox Vesuvius as it is in a Kydex scabbard then the weather will not affect it in the slightest even if you continually get it wet.The shape of the vesuvius is, IMHO better for skinning animals with. It's really a matter of what you are intending to do. Both knives are made well. Of course too, the Vesuvius comes with a Ferro rod. You can not remove the scales of the vesuvius but you can with the micarta ones of the M1. I'm partial to Alfredo Doricchi's designs too. Hope that helps. I think both knives are good and the differences are really in the blade shapes and carry systems as they are of similar size. It's really up to what you plan on doing. I gave my M1 to a very good friend who is very hard on knives and I'm keeping my Vesuvius for the present. I wouldn't have given it to him if it was crap as I simply don't give rubbish to my friends. As I said they are both good knives.

Hi, then I'd try contacting either some spanish companies eg www.filofiel.com/ or the UK distributor and they can tell you where maybe eg www.hunters-knives.co.uk. Sorry I can't be of more help. I bought mine directly from the UK distributor, www.cudemanknives.co.uk, just search their site. But the Spanish companies will be a good bet. Good luck!
