Around 1971-2 I used to write to Bertram Yachts from my School and ask for them to please send me the Brochures. I still have them today . I remember Thunderstreak in Groves & Guttteridge with Surfury and all the other Powerboats of the time preparing for the Cowes Torquay Race and was and still am an avid fan. Great content Thank you.

Great documentary about an iconic American boat builder! The comprehensive history of Bertram Yachts is fascinating, especially the summary of how the 31 Bertram caught the entire yachting world by storm back in the 1960s. It is amazing to see so many passionate owners who have caringly and meticulously restored their vintage 31 moppies to their former glory - and some even beyond, with modern updates and creative add ons.

One of the most famous boat designs in the modern boating era, the Bertram 31 has achieved near cult like status! Perfect video capturing the essence of the brand and the "Moppie" model itself, excellent!!

I have a very old 46, which I love. She's a dream to work on. Apart from breaking every bone in my back to get to the engines, she is very manageable. And takes on everything the sea can throw at her. I went straight to the 46 after fishing on an old 31 in Jamaica years ago and just GETTING what Bertrams are about.. Amazing boats!!!!

I have a Bertram 25 foot Mark II hardtop that my father purchased new in 1967. We treat her with loving care and this year will welcome the 5th generation of the family to board her. She has always been in Michigan but he also during his lifetime owned a 31’ and a 38’ in the Virgin Islands.

What a nice video. Legendary Bertram. My only small critic would have been to make it a bit longer, and to put other iconic Bertrams as the 28, the 46, and the 54.

With Marilyn DeMartini as the perfect hostess, YachtWorld sure went out with a glorious bang in 2022, by telling the story about Dick Bertram and his 31 Moppie. I was especially pleased to see how well you captured the enthusiasm among the Bertram owners who spend so much time and coin restoring or simply keeping their classic 31's in Bristol condition. A special tip of the hat for covering British Sportsman Hugo Peel's admirable restoration of Thunderstreak, Tommy Sopwith’s 1963 Bertram 31 Competition Special. Acknowledging Michael Peters' imperative contribution in getting the design of the new Bertram 35 perfect was also very nice. I know he very much enjoys both his 31 Bahia Mar and Bertram 20 custom center console. Certainly, look forward to your next Cult Classics episode. Thank You so very much.

Thanks so much for watching and the kind words Lars! We're very glad to hear you enjoyed the episode, and are pleased you appreciated all the great figures we covered here, including Hugo Peel's restoration of Sopwith's boat. And yes, Michael Peters certainly is a fundamental key to the story too! We're hard at work on the next episodes, so stay tuned! Covering many of the iconic builders like Bertram...can you guess who is next?? We'll give you a hint: Don Aronow...

@@yachtworld Fantastic. Michael,, Claudia, and Don's other three children will definitely enjoy this. The importance of the different designers of Don's boat models, and the assistance of fellows like Elton Cary and Allan 'Brownie' Brown are something that many viewers will appreciate learning about in detail. Best of luck with your production.

Not for me lol looks good but then you look at the years they were made 70s and early 80s wood hulls inside the fiberglass. You can easily pick one up for $100,000. I rather get a Grady from 1997-2003 era.

Bertram's Ray Hunt hull form is indeed very good for rough water speed and stability. It is NOT however good for efficiency. Many do not understand this and think deep V hulls are the best. They are in fact poor in efficiency. Many boats use deep V hulls that should not. By contrast, many fine Carolina type sportfishing boats (regardless of where they are made) use more balanced deep V sections forward, transitioning to quite shallow aft or even flat. These are best for sane speeds employed 98% of the time on the water. But for outright racing speeds on rough water the Bertram hull or a deep V is functionally best given the need for softer wave impacts. Is that what you want for your sportfishing boat? Most do not. When marketing and trophies determine sales over common sense, half the industry goes awry.

Thanks so much for putting this up, watch the hole video hopefully I'll finish mine some day, I worked on a 31 bertram out of Nantucket boat basin as a young boy called the Sea Nic she had a tower and a pulpit and diesels and was owned by a man named charlie davis I worked for him in the early 70's as Mate we chartered the boat during the week for blue fish and stripped bass then on weekends we would go off shore for sword fish witch I would run the boat and the owner Charlie would harpoon the sword fish we where a great team we stuck 3 sword fish in about 2 hour one day and I remember him giving a great compliment on how good I could captain the boat I was 12 years old The 31 bertram will always be my favorite boat of all time been in heavy sea with these boats and like always never had a bad day when aboard a 31 bertram king of the sea
