“Piper argues that if he had lost even once, he’d be finished as a top heel as Hogan would simply move on to the next guy.” I actually don’t think this is unreasonable. How many times did we see exactly this scenario play out in the following years?

Part of it was to take heat off Roman, yes. Ultimately though Bill refused to lose to The Fiend. Reports said that Bill saw his character as a Superhero, and losing to the Fiend would destroy his credibility with younger fans. Goldberg got a lot of heat for that, but also foolish for WWE to go through with it after he refused.

Considering he still brings ratings and puts asses in seats for special guest appearances, yeah. In at least a few interviews I’ve heard him talk about it, and he basically admitted that were he to have to put Brock over on a Pay Per View, he’d be OK with it. But not on a nothing match on a smackdown basically. Ironically, Brock beating a former King of the Ring Winner to become the king of the ring actually would be a pretty good story.
@dhenderson1810
@dhenderson1810 3 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowknightEX Austin also didn't want to fight Brock, because Brock is careless, and has legit injured other wrestlers in the ring, and Austin didn't want Brock to screw up the F5 and drop him on his neck. However, Austin acted like a child walking out. He denied his fans his presence. He should have politiked for a better solution, and Vince wouldn't fire Austin for refusing to do it, since it would be a PR disaster Vince would lose. Austin himself admitted years later on his podcast that he acted wrong walking out, and said that he was stubborn and refused to not have his own way back then, something he regrets now.

If WWE wants to protect a wrestler , they should make sure that the wrestler is not in the main event picture for most of the period. I have heard another reason Austin refused to lose to Brock Lesnar. Austin actually didn't want to fight Brock Lesnar at all. The reason is because Brock is known to be careless in the ring, and has injured people in the past. Austin was paranoid about re-injuring his neck, and thought that Brock would drop him during an F5, and paralyze him. This is also why Austin fought the Rock so often at Wrestlemania, not just because of the star power, but Austin considered the Rock the safest man in the ring, and was confident that the Rock wouldn't drop him on his head, or do anything which re-injured Austin's neck.

First, a list of wrestlers refusing to do the job could be all Hogan matches, brother! Whenever he was asked to do the job, Hogan would play his "that doesn't work for me, brother" card. Second, Austin was justified in not wanting to do the job for Brock Lesnar on free TV with no build up to the match. It makes me so happy to know that The Nexus was beloved by so many people, because I wanted them to lose so badly and when they did I cried sweet tears of joy. I relish in the persistent agony. Nexus was nobodies, outside of Daniel Brian and Ryback I didn't end up liking any of these guys, and Daniel Bryan was the only one with longevity. Horrible stable, John did the right thing.

When you're at the end of your career, that's what you do. It's no longer about you, it's about the future. Austin basically gave a big "fuck you" to all the ones who did it for him.

The lack of Shawn Michaels refusals to do the job is disappointing. Vince wasn't going to pay Bret the money he was owed in the contract that Vince signed him to. Yeah, Vince maybe had to "overpay" to keep Bret but considering where the fed was when Bret was on top vs. most other champions after him before Bret left for WCW, Bret was actually underpaid.

I support Austin's decision 100% it just made no sense for him to lose like that. Also although Austin has since came out and said he shouldn't have walked out I think he still 100% believes he did what was right and just wanted to mend bridges so acts apologetic. I would too.
