HUMAN SADNESS LYRICS
beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field, i will be meeting you there
-Rumi
put money in my hand
and i will do the things you want me to
Vanity… overriding wisdom,
usually common sense.
should i delete it,
you said you'd read it
you promised you would never ruin it with sequels,
I wake for you… on and on
beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field,
i will be meeting you there.
~
the moon's a skull, i think it's grinning
the room is full of people now i think it's spinning
wanted you… didn't ask for nothing. wait for you… on and on
and i don't need your tie, i don't need to, tired of saying it.
we don't need more talk, don't empty out your canteen on the desert floor.
…ahhh, it's all my fault
never wanna spell it out,
i just want to say that it is all my fault,
i could never spit it out,
i don't wanna fix your tie...
never want to say we're sad,
thankful that we got some chance,
i know you won't get back your time,
i wish that you could take it back...
beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field,
i will be meeting you there.
~
he wanted it more than me, i suppose
i was in a rush to wait in a line.
now i hear echoes of my old self,
this is not the way to be.
all at once,
i lost my way...
is it not true, the things that we did?
come here at once and look what they did
come here shut down and tune in tonite,
learn the words that they teach you without you realizing it
come here sit down and watch some tv
mine all mine / wait your turn
cross my cross / slice his hand
not your son / not your friend / not your enemy
i rely on the little things to get me by,
conscience says "i'm ok",
you don't hear what they say.
"he's not my son, search his home"
off to war,
it's time to go hide inside
-
soft skin,
weak chin,
just walk me thru it, tell me what to do i'll do
hurry hurry, that's my baby
ohh, do what you can.
all the time - he waits for me.
and now we talk from time to time,
hits you on the head when nobody's there,
then he says 'come here could you fix my tie?'
it's never gonna be,
to be is not the way to be.
show me where to go don't get angry so quickly,
fuck depression...
beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field,
i will be meeting you there
~
understanding is more important than love,
if not money will always trump justice
all is lost,
i'll find my way...
so i say,
to be is not to be.
to be is not the way to be.

The first time I heard this song I was walking back to my car down a street in San Fransisco around 3am. Everything was dead silent.. At first I didn’t know where the sound was coming from.. It kept getting louder, and closer to me until I finally see this hipster kid riding down the street on his bike with a little speaker. I stopped him to ask what song it was.. If I didn’t ask, I probably would have never heard it again. Bless you man, wherever you are. Bless you.

Not entirely related, but he came to a free festival that used to take place in México, and when the concert was over everyone was yelling "otra" (another in Spanish) and they all returned to the stage and played Human Sadness. I SCREAMED as loud as I could and got so emotional about it.

perfection. fucking perfection. i don't even get why this one's underrated. it's just perfect. everything about this song speaks sadness and misery. i love how i don't feel responsible to understand the lyrics. i like how by not understanding a thing, i'm allowed to associate it with any kind of feelings. i just need to listen and let it devour the state of my mental and emotional being. and anbshxjsj idk i also think this song is perfect when u feel empty and tremendously sad for no reason. the sadness is beyond your comprehension and reasoning, thus, listening to this song where lyrics is almost understandable is just so perfect.

Today I was in the car with my mom and listening to this song in my earbuds and she tells me "I hate when you play music in your headphones, you could just play it in the car speaker. 7 years later and I still just marvel at the greatness of this song. I was in a very dark place from 2011-2016. I was spiritually dead inside and full of resentment from stuff I went through and the love of my life dying unexpectedly, in the middle of us being in a huge fight. I had so much regret and self blame and no will to live… I remember when my life finally changed and I broke myself out of that mental prison and found so much inner strength, self love, forgiveness to myself and others, realized I had been living in a victim mentality, and my whole life started going rapidly better in every area. Lost 70 lbs, got off of methadone which I was on for 8 years, got off Xanax, quit drinking. Cut out toxic friends… learned to be fully independent and self sufficient and love myself… That journey to freedom reminds me of the Voidz and The Strokes. I was listening to them like every single day. Julian’s art is powerful and it truly helped me heal. And I’m eternally grateful for it.

No one is alone. There are far more of us... if only we'd unite. Perhaps we could rid the world of Evil.. but Evil has us all busy with it's new gadgets, propaganda, movies, music... distractions... pick your poison, of course. Where one goes, we go all. It'd be best we all go to it in harmony. Our species may thrive from unity.

This song is my all-time favorite. It took me 18 years of listening to the Strokes to finally end up listening to Human Sadness, and then to this full clip version. Listening to it too much kind of takes a toll on me so I try to limit it to 1-2 times a day. There are hundreds of songs I am addicted to, but boy this one is in another league. Fans of The Strokes always end up here, as it looks to me that this is the most quintessential piece Julian ever made. Take a look at the Live versions (like Dublin live) where fans are just crying while he sings it. Thanks Julian, Jake, Alex, Jeramy, Amir, for this masterpiece, work of art. And thanks to all the people here with these comments. I never post comments, but comments here on this song are always a delight. Love you all

Me and my gf saw Julian Casablancas + The Voidz live in Portugal last year (2018). They were the last band to perform that night. When they started, half the crowd had left because most of the people were there to listen to hip-hop. The sound was terrible during the whole concert, I guess the sound engineers are not used to mix a real band nowadays, with real instruments... There were around 100 people at the concert at that point. Julian couldn't hear himself on the stage, he left several times. At first, he seemed happy and joked about it, then he got mad as he had to interrupt most of the songs. At the end, some people asked him to play "The Strokes" and they began to play "I'll try anything once". Halfway through, he stopped. Once again, he couldn't hear himself on stage. He left. Some more people left, but the rest of us started asking for this song "Human Sadness". He came back and suddenly the Voidz played this song. It was incredible. The sound became nice. When they finished, Beardo came to me and gave me his guitar pick. I didn't ask for it, but I guess he saw me dancing the whole concert. I'll never forget this concert, I have the pick as a symbol of that day. They were amazing despite all the troubles at the beginning of the gig. Thank you for this concert

@@physicsfun2158 Sure! I'll let you my interpretation ;)) The "hits you on the head when nobody's there" I relate it to a toxic bond, where one person abuses and psychologically manipulates another when you are in a moment of "peace and harmony" where things are supposed to be fine in your relationship, but, anyway, takes every opportunity to impose you wrong ideas about yourself. But then, out of doors, that same person will be praising your own achievements, and even holding themself responsible for your success. That's what the "then he says, 'come here could you fix my tie'" part means for me

Lyrics: vanity overriding wisdom, usually common sense Should I delete it, you said you'd read it You promised you would never ruin it with sequels I wait for you on and on Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field I will be meeting you there Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field I will be meeting you there Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a- The moon's a skull, I think it's grinning The room is full of people now I think it's spinning Wanted you, didn't ask for nothing Wait for you on and on And I don't need your tie, I don't need to, tired of saying it We don't need more talk, don't empty out your canteen on the desert floor Ahhh, it's all my fault Never wanna spell it out, I just want to say that it is all my fault I could never spit it out, I don't wanna fix your tie Never want to say we're sad, thankful that we got some chance I know you won't get back your time, I wish that you could take it back Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field I will be meeting you there Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field I will be meeting you there Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field I will be meeting you there He wanted it more than me, I suppose I was in a rush to wait in a line Now I hear echoes of my old self This is not the way to be All at once, I lost my way Is it not true, the things that we did? Come here at once and look what they did Come here shut down and tune in tonight Learn the words that they teach you without you realizing it Come here sit down and watch some TV Mine all mine, wait your turn Cross my cross, slice his hand Not your son, not your friend, not your enemy I rely on the little things to get me by, conscience says "I'm ok" You don't hear what they say "He's not my son, search his home" Off to war, it's time to go hide inside Soft skin, weak chin Just walk me through it, tell me what to do I'll do it Hurry hurry, that's my baby, ohh, do what you can All the time, he waits for me And now we talk from time to time Hits you on the head when nobody's there Then he says "Come here could you fix my tie?" It's never gonna be to be is not the way to be Show me where to go don't get angry so quickly, fuck depression Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field I will be meeting you there Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field I will be meeting you there Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field I will be meeting you there Understanding is more important than love If not money will always trump justice All is lost, I'll find my way So I say to be is not to be, to be is not the way to be

This song is ineffable. It's the anthem of life, both explaining in the vaguest but most captive terms as well as fully encapsulating the complexities of life's dualities. It's visual display is equally as spectacular. Capturing humans in their rawest form in the struggle and chaotic confusion that is being human. That is exactly why it's both dynamically hopeful and full of despair at once. It's the essence of why we need every range of event, emotion, good, bad, and all spectrums of everything in between. It's what helps us see why life is so fucked up yet still somehow beautiful. Thank you for this song It genuinely is on a much higher level of consciousness.

My synopsis: the video shows several people who are obviously not happy with their lives and don't know how to fix it, trying everything from drugs to prostitutes, but never truly finding happiness. The white glasses show the blindness we have when we see these people, we think they want to be this way. We can not see what is behind their eyes. They dont understand why they are this way, and may never. That is human sadness. The inevitable realization we dont know who we are here or what we can do to find out who we are.

The story of the video was conceived by Casablancas, Warren Fu, and bassist Jake Bercovici and explores several storylines of human sorrow and anguish, portrayed by each member of the band juxtaposed against footage of the band playing as the apocalypse occurs on Earth. The video was inspired by the story of "the band that played on" on the Titanic as the ship sank. The end credits feature the demo of Human Sadness that Casablancas composed for the 2012 short film "The Unseen Beauty", a profile on Casablancas' step-father and artistic mentor Sam Adoquei. The music video took over a year to complete.

Honestly, best song ever, really captures what chaos and an overcrowded mind feel like everything hits at once and the instrumental breaks only make the effect stronger. Makes me cry everytime what a fucking masterpiece

I remember finding out about this song only two weeks before my dad unexpectedly passed away. This was the only thing I listened to for that week. It really helped me through some tough spots. Its been 5 years today. It’s hard to come back to this song sometimes because i think about him, but it’s odd, it’s a song that makes you feel sad but hopeful at the same time. Miss you dad.

This song made me realize the sadness and depression I’ve been going through. I’ve been in denial about my condition for the longest time having seizures from stress and anxiety for 4 years now, it very confusing, and painful until you come to the realization that the reason for all the pain is yourself and the only way to get help is to reach out for it. Feeling fed up with it and not doing anything about has never got me anywhere. But I’m proud of myself for not giving up and still kicking and screaming.

honestly human sadness is one of the most complicated and intricate pieces of music ever. It’s bliss and that baseline is orgasmic. Its sound is very strange and sounds like a broken instrument but it’s as if those broken instruments sound better than the real ones and these guys master this sound. It’s sounds broken like and emotion I can’t describe. It’s an masterpiece
