"Braveheart is the Scottish Black Panther" Well, it's about as historically accurate.
@adamlakeman72402 жыл бұрын
@Wicker 2 Nope. The only thing true about Braveheart is that there was a Scottish guy called William Wallace who fought England but was captured and executed. Everything else was a fantasy conjured from it's (American) writer's mind, from the battle of Stirling Bridge taking place on an open field to Edward I's son being gay to prima noctis being a thing to Robert the Bruce being a cowardly traitor to someone being able to hold a thistle when a child hands them it to the Irish switching sides mid-battle to Edward I being a pagan to everyone wearing woad and tartan to Wallace himself being a farmer and not a knight. The University of Edinburgh once tried to list the inaccuracies of the movie. They gave up when they realised they were only five minutes in and had already filled up several pages. Black Panther is unironically exactly as accurate as Braveheart, which is to say not at all.

There was a water tax imposed by the king during the drought which was too harsh. In order for the jester to get it across his fat head, he made a joke out of it. It went along Something like “we can’t get out of this drought because even the rain is afraid to be taxed “
@KingRumar2 жыл бұрын
I found it! Shen Jiangao (aka Gradually Stretching Taller) was the 10th-century jester for the Southern Tang emperor Liezu. When the kingdom was struck by drought, the jester commented that even the rain was afraid of being taxed and would not enter the land. The emperor laughed and reduced taxes. Supposedly, it rained that very night. The jester was also credited with saving the emperor’s life. Knowing he could not win a war with Zhou Ben, Liezu invited his enemy to a banquet. But Ben slipped poison into a wine goblet before offering it to Liezu with a wish for long life and a request to drink as a sign of unity. Shen Jiango grabbed the poisoned goblet, drank it himself, and fled the room. He allowed his emperor a way out of the deadly situation at the cost of his own life. After fleeing the banquet and being given antidotes that did not work, his brain burst.

Court Jester's job was to basically tell the king stuff he didn't like to hear (bad news/bureaucracy) in a joking manner. They were actually a trusted and respected position
@daroaminggnome2 жыл бұрын
Thats a romanticized view of the position. Most of the time its quite literally hired entertainment. For some reason we find it hard to believe courts would simply pay people to tell their guests jokes and do silly things. Like jesters aren't just insulting the most powerful men in the country on the daily and getting away with it, nor were they dabbling in some gigabrain political satire all the time right in front of them. You'd be pretty lucky to actually nail a political zinger like that before they off you, normally you'd just die because a low class performer is an easily replaced scapegoat to any foul-minded & short-tempered ruler regardless of their performance. In fact the most common role of a jester was to entertain the common folk, not noblemen. There really was no fancy power balance system where Kings were dragging in literal clowns to advise them via joke and allegory. The romanticized view unsurprisingly comes mostly from literature, not history. Not that the "jester's rights" so to speak didn't exist at all, but it wasn't used at anywhere near the level its portrayed as. Any decent monarch wouldn't kill you, sure, but they will just kick you out if they don't like you.
@pancakes86702 жыл бұрын
@@daroaminggnome Right. People often use the logic of "Any good monarch wouldn't kill the court jester", but most monarchs weren't good lol. That's why there's so many of them left (sarcasm). Sometimes reality isn't as glamorous as we'd like it to be, but it's important to stay grounded in Reality.
