Cummins ISX Fuel Filter Replacement

Replacing the fuel filter on my truck. Pretty simple operation.
You'll need:
* Fuel Filter wrench
* New filter
* New O-rings (comes with filter)
* Empty container to hold about 70oz.
* Clean rags
* 15 minutes

Thanks for the video, I was going to take my truck to the shop to change that filter but your video has changed my mind and I will do it myself, very easy and simple again thanks, Next time say you will turn the old filter and jug into a Haz Mat facility or disposal point, I happen to work in Haz Mat so be careful what you say and do in today's society dealing with Haz Mat or Hazardous Waste. Fantastic video there guy., but i would agree heavily with jilie36. In case you didn't know, that is NOT the primary fuel filter, but rather the filter for your Davco Fuel - Water - Seperator. It will collect water in the bottom of it if there is water in the fuel. Its great that you have a 10-micon (FS-19976) filter in it, I run a very fine filter in my truck as well, but re-using the fuel that you drain from the bottom of it will typically have a heavier concentration of water in it than normal, so it is not the best idea to re-use that fuel. In winter, I have seen quite a lot of water come out of the bottom of those things at times, wehen opening the drain. Also, I use a bit of vasoline on the threads of the big plastic ring that screws down to prevent it from binding up, making it easier to get on and off.

Some Cummins engines filters can be installed dry.. Just replace, tighten, and turn the ignition on couple of times so it primes it's self - Team Petro

Just a little tip...never re-use that fuel you just drained out...that kinda defeats the purpose of changing the filter in the first place. Go get a 1/2 gallon of clean stuff (I see the Love's canopy behind you there,) and use that to prime it. And yes, please get that thing washed! Not trying to criticize here...good to see a younger guy that at least takes the effort to do a little work himself these days.

I keep hearing about not reusing the old fuel which makes sense, But shouldn't all the fuel be drained out,completely to the bottom.?

That filter unit is made by Davco. I was a field rep for them for 10 years till I wasn't dynamic and professional enough haha. Still a good filter system.

Never reuse the contaminated fuel. Find some fresh fuel. I carry a magic siphon. You can get fuel with it from either the fuel tank or at the fuel pump. Nice video. They sell the proper filter wrench at most dealerships or some TA's or Petro,s carry them.

much better than they used to this comment coming from my wifes account but i am her husband and cummins certified and peterbilt dealer tech. the def and scr addition was a big reduction in work for the dpf and egr systems wshich also in turn allowed them to choke the engine back a little less so getting better overall.

Diesel doesn't caught on fire. And you only changed the water separator filter your main fuel filter was behind it. But it's good to know some drivers actually know how to do some maintenance on there trucks. Good job!

Every time I fuel, I drain the dirty water off from the button of the water separator. By doing this the water separator filter last longer.

@kb1nyd. Most bigger companies will have a shop do it for you but honestly it is such a simple thing the drive should be able to do it

Matt, Why are you changing the fuel filter? Surely that should be done in the company workshop during a routine service. It is always good to know how to do all of these things in case you breakdown with a clogged filter. Do you always carry a spare in the locker? Most companies frown on drivers doing work on the engine, that is why they employ mechanics. You will have to do a video on how to bleed the fuel system after you run out of fuel.

loved the video though i cant help myself ive actually have been yelled at many time for smoking at the pumps lol but if you notice there are no no smoking signs at the fuel pumps do to the fact that it takes allot more heat then a cigarette or even a lighter can give off to spark the diesel just a little information for you of course unless you were being sarcastic lol keep up the vids im just about caught up now any how be safe out there

That's a fuel water separator most newer ones have auto prime the fuel filter is the white one by the motor. So you still have not change one yet get out your manual and read it.

You don't have to add the fuel back in on the cummins. Cycle key a few times and it fills itself up

Sean Whitledge unless the priming pump is bad and to clear up your comment don’t just cycle it turn key on until you hear the humming go away shut it off for 10 seconds and do again 3 times should work

It's supposed to the level is reserve to fill ur fuel lines and prime then up

someone slap this guy for these reason here, NEVER reuse a Oring EVER! Also NEVER Reuse the Fuel you removed and yes ALWAYS drain that Fuel Bowl Completely!!!! after installing the fuel bowl, refuel bowl with clean fuel to the top of the filter and start truck and allow fuel to drain to bottom on filter then install cap. Top lid does not need to be that tight. on top if it all this is water/fuel sep missed the fuel filter

Dude you don’t need to reuse old fuel to fill up! It’s a CUMMINS! Next time after replacing new filter and tighten ring turn key to ON position BUT don’t START. Wait a couple minutes. Watch how it automatically fills up with fresh fuel directly from tank!

To start off. Listen to yourself. Use the right tools. What did you do to the ring on that holds the housing down. The ring is bent from using the wrong tool. You are the guy that makes it hard for the real next mechanic. You hit it on the tire to clean it off. I would fire you if you work in my shop.
