As a beginner, there seems to be a lot of steps to making a model and printing it. From the context here, it seems the model is designed in a cad program and then loaded into a "slicer". It would be helpful if someone did an overview showing how these relate to each other and what works with what. There seem to be a lot of ways to build models and different kinds of files. What works with what?

I’ve had my 3D printer for two years, the first six months I wasn’t able to use due to the fact that my mom did not like the smell of burning PLA, then I just took 3 days to understand the settings and how the machine works and how to start it since it needs a little hand holding as I call it. But after I got the test print done I was intimidated by the whole idea of having to make a actual print. So for the last year and a half I haven’t touched it. Thank you this was very helpful

Hi, I have a quick question if you don't mind. I was wondering if I could import an image of something. Let's say the outline of a giraffe's face cropped out on photoshop! Could I then take the image and make that 3d? not create a full giraffe's head, just the giraffe's face but with say a quarter of an inch thick. So if I stuck it on my wall it would stick out a little bit? (just an example lol!)
@3DNow

You would have to create a sketch of the outline in a CAD program and extrude it. Check out my videos on Fusion 360.

I'm just getting started and still learning. I've printed a model, but halfway the filament got snagged. So the printer continued it's program but wasn't using filament. I want to print the top half of the model so I can stick it on the lower half. How do I cut the model in half and print only the top half? Or is there a way where you can let the printer restart from a certain layer?

Wondering how you got your slicer set up to print that Yoda bust in an hour and 10 min? I just downloaded Cura and thought I set up the parameters similar to yours and the slicer calculates almost 4 hrs and 1.5-2x the weight of polymer extruded. Any thoughts on what settings I might be able to change to get the fast print you achieved here?

Print speed, infill percentage, layer height, shell count, etc. There are many factors.
@dominasn

Totally get that, however I followed/double/triple checked all the settings you set, most of which you mention in the comment above, and the result never came close to a similar print time once sliced. I think I found the same, or similar enough model, from thingiverse, and scaled it to be as close to the dimensions as you had in the video too. I'm printing from an Ender 3Pro if that might make a difference. Thought there might be something non-obvious that would cause that discrepancy. Thanks!
